Your point about the 90s and ethereal looks is so true. Look up Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman then - you see all these minimal dresses with limited makeup and no jewelry. It was really normal then to wear a single necklace with either long hair down or pulled back simply and no earrings or complex makeup other then like mascara, concealer, and maybe lip balm // stick / stain.

A non-white model of this era that was striking in her simplicity was Jenny Shimizu. She’s always been more masc in presentation but she’s one of the models I immediately think of when people talk about chic 90s, especially with minimal makeup and jewelry

I inherited my mother jewellery and I have never been able to wear it, the pieces overwhelm me. You just made me realize that my mother had dramatic essence, maybe a touch of natural, so her bold, big jewellery was perfectly suited for her. I have more a classic face, maybe with a bit of gamine, so I need smaller, more understated pieces. I will keep my mom's pieces nevertheless, maybe my daugther will wear them! Also, your examples are quite useful. The more I listen to you, the more I am sure I understand my features rigth! Thank you for another insightful video

As a natural I definitely recommend laser cutted wooden earrings, the design can make it more bold or delicate for your other essences, but the material makes it fit to the natural essence. I would never have thought of this as an option for jewellery until I found it a couple of months ago and they're basically my best earrings right now.

It would be so helpful if you did a video about how to pull off stuff that doesn't usually work for your essence, like the one you did for edgy looks for body types. I personally wanna ask what should I do to add a bit of quirkiness to my looks as a classic?
@iam4w3enfp7 күн бұрын
play with geometrical prints incorporate bright colours in visually memorable elements of your outfits. these elements (like shoes or a chunky belt) should be far from your face look up school girls from japan and how they style their dull school fits maybe a bit of gothic/cyber-punk influence would also add a bit of quirkiness and rebellion to a traditionally classic look i have had an ex that was classic, and that's how he would add a bit of life to his outfits.

Apologies this is a long reply i wanted to be through. I hope it's helpful! When i style my classic friend we always come back to what Type of quirky she enjoys. Something like cute miniatures, or flowers or fun colours are all quirky without being zainy for instance. So give that a think, of like.. what do You find fun and enjoyable, and try to detatch it from vompn ideas of what quirky Should be. (And on that note: getting out of the mindset that quirky Has to be gamine, which is a bit of a brain trap imo). The amazing gift that classics have is that a little goes a Long Way. So pick out One aspect to highlight and keep the rest within your comfort zone. An example: Litteral earrings (let's say Horses hypothetically), but keep it within your palette, and don't exaggerate the size. Or you can take a traditionally classic piece and change the colour, for instance a colourful gem or pearl. Try playing with size and shape. Owning the small ammount of contrast you've added by leaving your comfort zone but also adding harmony by matching it with other things in your look will pop like crazy and it's only bad if you dislike it. So TLDR: zero in on one aspect to enhance in a quirky way, and ground the rest in smth more classy. Make the contrast (the "disharmony") a Feature of the look. Even a little gets the idea across Really Quickly. And With That Said: evetyone has a different threshold for detail and what Type of detail contrasts in what way so Experiment! Try going more Colourful for a period, play with shapes, show off your interests through litteral imagery, the world won't End if it looks a little silly or childish in the attempt. I hate to see classics who feel boxed in and bored w what they feel they Have to wear but are scared to make a big splash and look silly. It's Okay to take baby steps,in fact it usually makes the process easier. - Signed, the gamine friend who low key coerces their friends into wearing colour lmao (i am myself testing out my Classic and Ethereal threshold to challenge myself so!! It goes both ways. Good luck!^^)

Oh I love the idea of a fun pop of colour and a quirky pattern. The person before had amazing ideas. Classics can always rock neutrals but then you can add a bright trim to an accessory. The UK royals have it right, they wear colours to pop but always classic silhouettes and are put together. So maybe instead of a polkadot, the dots are tiny fruits so the overall look is cohesive and classic but there’s that fun element. You could also have fun designs in the linings of jackets (i had a blazer with doodles in the linings) and charms on your structured bag that represent you. I think the key is to be fun and quirky in a put together way, the more quirky you go, the more you need to balance that with overall clean timeless look. Those are the days to do your hair and not just roll out of bed. Hope that gives you ideas - sincerely an ethereal who was in business school and thought she was classic kibbe type and is not 😄✨

Gonna say that I think art nouveau style accessories specifically would be amazing if you have ethereal essence. Just in general, the natural, wispy, flowing shapes are extravagant and delicate all at once. Art deco would be a bit too geometric and blunt for an ethereal, I think.

I think what makes it difficult to figure out what works with your essences is the fact that most of us have a combination. I by far have the most gamine essence, but imo I do look really good in rounded shapes, bigger jewellery, and dangly earrings, assuming they're the right type. (Ie. I have a pair of dangly earrings which are a line of little silver stars which look great on me - I think they work well bc the star shapes are sharp and playful, and it's lots of little shapes stacked on top of one another as opposed to one long line.) I have hints of dramatic, romantic and ingenue essence as well, so maybe that's why. I suppose it's a case of trying things out from the different essences you have and seeing what works - ie. with a little romantic essence, I find I can wear a small amount of gems (ie a mid-size earring with a gem in it), but if I were to wear tons of gems/sparkles it would look silly on me and like I was trying too hard.

Loved the video. It is so true. I am most likely a flamboyant gamine with a lot of ingenue essence. So I look better with delicate jewelry and not much of it. I can do some quirky things, but they may overlap with ingenue. If too gamine like it can be too much (case in point for a me, I needed glasses and got a delicate pink pair that were perfect, and a thicker cobalt pair that is a little too harsh for me, but I can make it work) My favorite jewelry piece this winter has been some snowflake stud earrings. They look sweet and like they belong on me. I on the hunt for all stud earrings to wear when winter is over.

I often find I have to navigate recs for dramatic, romantic, and ethereal essences (my dominant three) plus Dark Autumn recs--so my overriding go-to is large, sinuous, sculptural pieces that evoke a regal and otherworldly tone and "drape" well on the body. My romantic essence is frequently satisfied via a specific style updated for a contemporary eye (e.g. a riviere necklace or torpedo earrings). I've even applied the whole essences thing to my choice of engagement ring: My fiance is somewhat of a traditionalist, had his eye on a classic diamond ring, but I vetoed that in favor of something I felt suited me better. As far as assigning eras to different essences, I would offer this: Yes, you can say "Dramatics are suited to the 1980s" (true! lots of Dramatic-friendly jewelry during that era!) or "Ethereals can wear lots of Art Deco" (sort of? I always thought of Art Nouveau as Ethereal's bailiwick). I believe that era-specific inspiration is what you make of it. For example I don't feel entirely certain that I'd suit (say) a lot of Edwardian jewelry because the trembling fragile look of those pieces doesn't chime with my dramatic essence, my seasonal palette, or my temperament...but I have no trouble seeking out an antique poison ring, which is a very dramatic/romantic sort of look. Great video. And thank you!

Interesting. My facial features seem to be ethereal and I love 1920s art deco style. I mean the slightly more dainty and sparkly pieces. Not the long beaded flapper necklaces. They overwhelm me, although they are often gorgeous works of art. I also have a liking for Victorian style because of its gothic vibes. Edwardian style I think would work very well for ingenues. It is often very girly and floral. And I think bronze age inspired jewellery would work very well for natural-ethereal or natural-dramatic.

I'm mainly ethereal, but also have natural essence, I'm also quite wide and tall in my body as a Flamboyant Natural. It sounds like the ethereal is "heaven" wispy, long and thin whilst natural is "earthy" and chunky - seems to be in opposition to each other. How should one manage this combination?
@s.a.43586 күн бұрын
I am similar, flamboyant natural with ethereal and natural (& ingenue) essence. Art eco piece can work, as they are not minimal and often draw on natural, but with a lot of curves and S-lines. They are delicate even if mid-size. Pieces that have natural themes (floral, leaves, etc) but are not too large - still with metals rather than wood. Some cottagecore pieces can work (but not all, as some will be too cutesy and gamine). Silver or gold pieces that are minimal / small to mid-size and include stones, especially if the stone is not a perfect geometric cut. Pearls also can work, especially irregularly shape ones. Where on your body you wear it can also make a difference. I cannot wear big earrings, for example, but a more chunky bracelet works. Stacking multiple thin chains with smaller pendants could work too, as each element is whispy and thin but combining a few gives it more volume (I have experience that stacking works better for me than a single necklace with different charms).

I feel like through this video I have come to the conclusion I have dramatic essensein my facial features. The problem with the jewelry that suits me is that it has to be quite large making it impossible to buy it in precious metals. Thankfully i am cool toned, so at least it's not gold, but I do not have the budget for chunky silver jewellery either😆

Where would ethnic jewellery fit in? Like Indian or turkish. They tend to be colourful, dangly, sometimes rounded.

We're going to look back on the chunky gold earing as severely dated.

When you said art deco for ethereals did you mean art nouveau? Because art deco is actually quite angular and blocky where art nouveau is loose and flowy, from my understanding

I have a mixture of natural, romantic, and classic in my facial features. I like a lot of natural minimal looking jewelry (semiprecious stones and modern shapes) but oversized does not work. I’m petite in size leaning soft natural.

Do you think there are some people for whom jewellery is just too much? I feel like I can't handle any jewellery. I definitely can't do oversized, big and chunky jewellery but I also can't do smaller stuff. It just completely overwhelms me. People find it strange that I don't wear any jewellery but I've tried so many types and it just doesn't look right on me. It always come across as costumey or like a little kid playing dress up, even if I just wear a small necklace or bracelet. I am pretty sure I have ingenue essence so I wondered if that plays into it and why I feel like I look like a kid that's gotten into her mum's jewellery box!

Man I want to know how to combine these into essences that are very close in percentages. Like if you’re Dramatic romantic or Classic Gamine lol
@Lienna-7 күн бұрын
For myself I took things from one essence that could fit in other essence, if it makes sense. As Natural Dramatic I like big heavy metal jewelry with undone vibe. But spikes look too unnatural to me and wooden jewelry is not dramatic enough. For Dramatic Romantic I imagine intimidating gems, for example big ruby earrings. For Classic Gamine maybe simple ring with enamel or dainty triangular earrings

What do you recommend to people whose essences conflict in the jewelry department? I have both classic and romantic essences (with ingenue as my third). I typically go with minimal jewelry but with simple but slightly large pearl earrings and I like how that looks-are there other looks that can be pulled off?

I really wish ethereal wasn't focused on as delicate and yin as much as it is as "alien". Or at least that’s the aura I perceive from many ethereals. It’s like the opposite of classic to me, but still a neutral essence. Instead of timeless and normal, it's of no time and different.

Yes! I always think of elongated sculptural shapes as opposed to overly delicate when it comes to ethereal--think Art Nouveau or medieval-inspired jewelry.

I think im more engenue than I wouldve ever thought cause i feel so boyish in personality. But i do look good in little flowers/bunnies/cherries lol. I think I may have some classic essence and the moderateness of that has made it hard to figure out my other essences. Cause no matter what essence I picture it has to be a lesser version of it for me. Its confusing cause my body is a super curvy theatrical romantic but Im not sure I have any romantic in my essence. I like dressing sexy but all I have to do is wear clothes and I feel sexy. When I wear sexy clothes it looks like Im a kid playing dress up.

Interesting as I seem not to fit in any of these categories. I suit best brutalist styles, very large rings in oxidaised silver, heavy necklaces etc.

I still find it confusing to have my two main essences as natural and classic. Like what is the balance between "take one thing off" and also "chunkier and bigger is better" vibe?? I tend to wear more classic jewelry bc i like everyday pieces i dont need to take off but also i do enjoy stone and crystals in jewelry which i guess is more natural
@max.c42666 күн бұрын
I think you could balance the two in 2 different ways: 1) go for bigger, chunky pieces but wear a minimal amount (like a statement necklace but nothing else (maybe a ring or 2 as well), or chunky earrings but not bracelets and rings as well) 2) or go for smaller, moderate pieces but experiment with layering lots of pieces up Hope this helps in some way :)

Hi Ellie! This doesn't really have to do with the jewelry but do you know what boddy type is Fran Drescher in kibbie? Cause my body is exactly the same but I still don't know if it's soft gamine, soft clasic or romantic.

I don't think you mean 1940s for Classics. Jewellery was mostly statement Art Deco.

I might respectfully disagree on some of the gamine recommendations. As a f. gamine with gamine essence but zero ingenue or ethereal, small jewelry gets lost on me, or feels too tame. I agree with geometric, colorful, even plastic but I also feel free to go statement with the size of the pieces.
@RuviGaPo6 күн бұрын
Is it weird to say i got Bored of gamine jewelry somehow and want to try other things?? 😂😂 EDIT: Also! Trying to figure out essence too bc like... i Assumed NGI.. but (in jewelry) i can only rly pull off G and i can wear some mix of D and E in the length and texture, but idk if it's just bc i Like long earrings.. i mean i can't wear long necklaces... Small is not good for me, it disappears against my features, esp not small and round, but large and round is also bad so... whos to say anymore. Noone has Ever claimed they see D or E in my face or body so SHRUGS Ig im just Really Gamine...

I love your content so much! but as a gamine i feel like you could do better explaining the essence. I wish you would stop suggest the childish quirky stuff like food earings and basically every unflattering trend from the 2010’s and treat the gamines more maturely. You said the era is 1960’s - do that then! I also dont think al of that is true. Honestly, i dont think whimsical spunky jewlery (or clothing, or haircuts, because that are always your recommendation for gamines) have to be weird, childish and unflattering. As a style influencer i wish you would use your knowledge and power and help gamines dress beautifully and mature while still enhancing the gamine features. Thank you and i hope this comment reach you because other than that i really love your channel and content ❤
