The pronunciation stems from it being a long word that needed to be said by a large number of uneducated sailors and communicated quickly. You can, however, pronounce it as you'd expect it to be pronounced and you wouldn't technically be wrong.

Nautical terms are really strange. When you had ships sailing around the world and picking up crew members that spoke different languages and each had their own name for things, it was confusing. Often new words were created by mashing up words from different languages. In this case, it seems like English and French. "c. 1400 (mid-14c. as Anglo-French forechasteil), "short raised deck in the fore part of the ship used in warfare," from Middle English fore- "before" + Anglo-French castel "fortified tower" (see castle (n.)). In broader reference to the part of a vessel forward of the fore rigging, late 15c.; hence, generally, "section of a ship where the sailors live" (by 1840). Spelling fo'c'sle reflects sailors' pronunciation. If at the aft part of a ship, it was an afcastle."

The books intentions is to be a terrible start for the letter, Not that it's all silent, they just happen to be silent , So Ewe Literrally saying, E IS for U is hilarious, E is for You , it stays in line with the books intentions, it was V sauce who purposed it was all about silence, in reality, the only stand out was V for silence, and all that proves is that the book couldn't find a good word that V would be bad for since it just HAPPENS to always say it's name

In "aisle" there is the sound "A". Same for Djabouti, there is a "D" sound. English only have letters for what is called a diphtongued vowel and fricative consonant. Those letters actually express two sounds. In "u" there is the sound "ee" and the sound "oo."

@@tedros6917 Only because the letter "i" is sometimes a diphtongue. Without the sound "a" in "aisle" you would have the "i" sound you can hear the the words "is" and "in." Even though some diphtongues are written with only one letter, they are still two sounds within one syllable.

That's not true, everyone i've ever known has pronounced Aisle the same as Isle, despite the latter not having any A at all. Both Aisle and Isle are pronounced the exact same way, at least in America (i'd assume the UK as well) meaning the A is never pronounced in Aisle. Also, S is silent is both Aisle and Isle as well. Come to think of it, the only 2 letters that ARE pronounced in Aisle are I and L, if we're being technical. The best way to think of the English Language imo, is like Fight Club... the only rule is there are no rules. The English Language is just lawless, really.

I thought everyone says the word "fifth", with the 2nd f. Because fifth (5th) isn't that much different from saying "fiftieth" (50th). Thinking back on times with I've heard other people saying "fifth", I don't remember anyone saying it as "fith", except for maybe other kids, back in elementary school. Ok, maybe other people are saying it as "fith", but at this point, I feel like I'm just making up memories that don't exist, and can't tell how other people have actually said it.

EDIT: Voila!! The correct pronunciation is something closer to "wahlah", which I think you could legitimately argue would be pronounced the same if it were written as just "oila" in english, dropping the V entirely. I stand by my statement that Q is the only correct answer and they attempted to separate out part of a digraph/trigraph that shares sounds. you literally pronounced fifth with the second f sound!! I know some people pronounce it "fith" - and yeah yeah language should be descriptive not prescriptive.... but they're still just wrong, lol. Also... does lacquer really count for q? That's like saying the K is silent is "lack" because the 'c' is solely responsible for making the hard-C sound, no? Q was my guess, just because I knew it /always/ is followed by a u, minus a couple foreign words (generally proper nouns, like 'Iraq', which still also keep the same hard sound).

@af6462 Жыл бұрын
I was raised in the midwest and have lived in 6 states and both coasts. In casual speech it's almost always pronounced "fith" in quick casual speech unless you're overly emphasizing the word. Same goes for "twelfth". This is because the "fth" is a very rare combination in English. We do the same to foreign words where sounds may be common there but not in English, like the "tz" in tzatziki, which I've heard pronounced a number of ways like "taziki", but rarely the "official" pronunciation of "tsah-tsee-kee". We're used to a "ts" sound in the middle or end of words but rarely at the beginning. Looping back, the same goes for a "fth" sound because it's so rare in English that people naturally omit the extraneous sound, especially in casual conversation. Hence the "f" being dropped and the word being pronounced as "fith". "Education" isn't a valid excuse here either because language is constantly evolving. The past tense of "dive" prefers "dived" over "dove" outside of North America over the last 50 years. We also don't say "thou" anymore, but I don't see people screaming to the heavens that we're uneducated in doing so. Where do we draw the line of what is "official" English? What's spoken now? 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 years ago? Shakespeare's accent would have been closer to an American accent than a modern RP British accent, despite people thinking that because England originated the language, it would be much more conservative. Quite the opposite, former colonies like America and Australia took the accent of the time, preserved some aspects and took others in a different direction, whereas England continued to morph with regional dialects (influenced by invaders of different origins over the last 1000 years), and today you basically hear a totally different accent if you drive an hour in any direction. Is there any way to determine which one of those is more "correct" than others? Hashtag wasn't a word even 30 years ago, does that make it not a real word? If I said "that's cool", the mutual agreed meaning between speaker and listener is that something is interesting, not start a fight because the original meaning of "cool" would be the opposite of "warm" and that I'm using it wrong.

I've always pronounced the "i" in business. The entymology of the word does come from "busy" and "ness" (state of). And the "i" is a short vowel, not a long or an E as in busy. I had to look it up to see that the default for that is 2 syllables and I would argue it is just that way in common use because people are lazy.
