It seems like the hard pad has become extinct in the gaming world as cloth pads have taken over. In this video, I share my thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages of hard pads and cloth pads.

Small note about soft pads. The directional friction changes based on the stitching orientation. Basically all cloth pads move faster in one direction (i.e. north/south) because of the weave of the fabric.

Hey RRK I actually view the ability to push your mouse in to a soft pad as a situational benefit. It can add more percussion to your flicks if at the end you push your mouse ever so slightly down creating more stopping force. Just an out of the box thought. Great video!

Very informative! I have found that I am a person truly on the fence, because there are times that I prefer a hard surface over a soft one, depending on the content of what I am doing, and strangely enough, depending on what mood my body is in at the time, for sometimes I may want to change it out on a whim, even if doing the same type of content. I would say there are good reasons why you might want to have both, especially if you spend lengthy sessions using it, as just changing them can increase comfort, precision, or even both depending on the demands of your body at the time. It's always good to have options, if they are available and affordable enough. Good tip with the lint roller, too! I feel every little, annoying miniscule fleck of anything myself and it can drive you crazy!

as a wrist/fingertip user i honestly didn't give hard pads a thought, i always thought the smoothness would make it harder to control. only to realize that the smoothness makes it easier for those micro adjustments, where a cloth pad has even more friction. once i started using hard i couldn't go back.

@@darrenluisis5067 its a decent size for a mousepad, especially for what it can do, but i agree. i dont actually use it anymore, nor am i still using a logitech mouse. i swapped to razer, because I'm upset that logitech uses the cheapest chinese micron switches in the world, and their unreliable asf. i would hold the trigger (left click obv) in a video game, and it would make me stop firing after a bullet or two goes off. it was extremely infuriating to lose fights because of that, but it took a lot for me to move away from logitech to anything else. Regarding your point of hard pads being small, the Glorious Helios is great quality; it can be moved several times while retaining its grip, it comes in a very big XL size, it is fast and after almost a year of use, the most worn area has a little bit more friction than the edges I rarely ever used. It does eat mouse skates though, if you want your mouse to act brand new, you would probably have to buy new skates every month and maybe get a new pad every 6 months, but that isn't necessary. I'm using it with their Model O mouse and it's a great combo.

Awesome video. Also, for people who have cats and other critters, you'll probably find that lint rollers don't work that well in the long term just due to the sheer volume of stuff you need to pull off. Myself, I just use packing tape. It's cheap and easy to use and convenient since ya just toss the piece when it gets too dirty. I just pull off a piece about two inches longer than my pad is wide, fold the ends over to make non sticky grip surfaces to grab on to, then start at the top, lay it down, squish it in contact with the pad from one edge to the other, then pull it up and take every trace of kitty/dog/critter fur, etc with it. I just do it in strips like this. Takes like 10 seconds to do the whole pad and those super fine hairs just come right up. I pretty much have to do mine every day since my particular mouse absolutely loses its mind with even a single hair in the sensor area. Ah well, better than cleaning mouse balls. :)

I've experimented with both hard and cloth pads over the years. Right now I'm rocking a deskpad, because I also play on a much lower sens than I used to, and also because I like resting my forearm on the desk and trailing the mat off the edge of the desk is smoother and more comfortable to run my arm over than my desk surface without using some sort of sleeve, where it would get stuck especially with any sweat. I loved the glide of hardpads but would frequently find that I aimed a little slower as a result because there was so little friction that I ended up to overcompensate in order to control my aim. I like cloth pads with a smooth or fast glide - I find the cloth material inherently provides that little bit of resistance that helps me flick more accurately. (Plus I'm more likely to run out of arm than I am to run out of mousepad space lol.)

I feel I need a cloth pad just because of the extra force required because I don’t have the steadiest of hands (I don’t shake noticeably to the eye but sometimes in game it shows) when I used my first mouse pad which was a hard one I couldn’t play precise at all and that took a really big toll on my gameplay (I play cs and am an above average player now but not before) once I got my cloth extended mouse mat I felt unleashed. I could finally play as low a sens as I wanted with no consequences to my flicks because the mat was so big. It was also the fact that because they need more pressure, I would only have deliberate movements even with my shaky hand. Getting that mouse mat was the best change I’ve made to my setup and the most impactful

I currently use a large hard mouse pad because I’m broke and got it from staples and I feel as though no matter how skilled I am in the game or hard I practice my aim it is still very inconsistent and not precise with small movements at all after reading this it feels like we feel the same way so I’m gonna buy a cloth mouse pad and I’m gonna tell you what happens
@Djitterbug
@Djitterbug 4 жыл бұрын
This is exactly why I'm getting a cloth one, my aim is visibly shaky sometimes so I need that extra friction. If I got a hard one, it would be too slidy.

cloth pad are really inconsistent when they absorb moisture, the moisture in the air or from your hand can get on cloth pad and can make the surface of the cloth pad more rough or sticky. and when the room is cold meaning the moisture in the air or from your hand will be gone, the cloth pad will feel really smooth until you've sweat. this will impact people who plays with high sensitivities because the slightest roughness or smoothness of the cloth pad movement can change where the mouse lands when you move it. this can also be hard to train for muscle memory since it will depend on the temperature of the room. for context, i live in the philippines and its always rainy and hot

That depends on the type of cloth pad an actual CLOTH pad doesn't do that, but a mooshy/spongy type of cloth pad does what you described.

I use a smooth wooden floor tile. It works amazingly. I used to use Carnuba wax but after a few years I realized just cleaning it with rubbing alcohol was good enough. I also just started using weather stripping as wrist-rests for my keyboard and wrist protectors for my mouse hand (my wrist tends to drag across the edge of my desk).

almost seems easier to use a thin, soft pad & ptfe skates. Slightly hang the pad off the edge of your desk to mitigate wrist damage/pain. to each his own though, we like what we like.

I legit use a Pokémon battling sheet thingy that has the same consistency as a cloth mouse pad, it’s also a full desk size. Got it from a Pokémon card box with those giant cards and the Pokémon battling sheet with it. Edit: Realized they are called Pokémon card battling mats and not “battle sheet thingys”.

You generally want to replace your Logitech G440 hardpad with a new one every 5-6 months or so if you are a frequent FPS player. I’ve found that after about 4-5 months of heavy use there’s enough damage to the mousepad surface to warrant changing. Also, be in the habit of swapping to a different mousepad if you’re not gaming and are just browsing your PC listening to music or doing other tasks. I always keep a clothpad beside it to swap to when I’m not in-game. That way I don’t needlessly wear the hardpad surface down when I’m not gaming.

Perfect timing. I almost bought a new Mousepad last night, but didn't know what I should go with. I have cloth right now but feel that it maybe affecting me because it is getting old and dirty. But I think I'll stick with Cloth, since you said it better for Lower Sens players :)

The only problem I have with cloth is that it gets dirty and over time I I doesn't feel as smooth. Plus my room gets kinda hot and the humidity just makes the mousepad feel weird. I just washed mine and it just still doesn't feel right. I might have to go buy another new one.

@@RockyJayyy Yeah, I've watched videos of how to clean them. It works for the most part. but still looks kind of gross. Honestly not sure if it's as smooth as it originally was because I've used the same one for 6ish years and I m just used to it.

@@xTheTamingx I'm about to get a new mousepad within the next couple days. I just don't like the way it feels, my qck+ is probably 6 months old and it just don't feel right. I love the way they are right out of the box but it doesn't last long. I'm pretty sure my problem is the heat and humidity in my room since it really wasn't dirty. I like the smoothness of the icemat glass but it's too small. Maybe I'll give the gsr a try since so many pro players use it.

I use a 20x20" sheet of tempered glass that I frosted (etched) so that the mouse tracks perfectly on it. After a short break in period the surface is almost perfectly smooth, extremely easy to clean (literally just use a glass wipe) and doesn't wear my mouse skates anywhere near as bad as other hard pads, or my favorite cloth pad the Artisan Shidenkai.

I've come up with a foam/sponge rubber desk mat that turned out to be very comfortable and fairly mouse compatible, more like moderate sensitivity. Been using it for 3 years personally and my friends, so far it's been great so I've made a whole batch of them, it's called Fusionstrike Limestone Desk Mat if anyone interested getting one (currently ship within UK but could sort out international shipment too). The rubber is made from sustainable limestone rock instead of oil/petrol which makes it more environmentally friendly than most desk mats out there. It's laminated with super stretch smooth nylon so it's easier to clean it than most cloth mats.

High control soft pad only for me. Feels like hard pads and EVEN the slicker cloth ones allow my mouse to slide, which means I have to use more effort to accelerate (change direction or speed), in other words I have to actively push against the momentum of the mouse and this seems objectively bad. Control pads allow for snappy stop & go and the resistance I need to overcome from inertia feels more consistent. Zowie GS-R Large is all I can use. Really wishing Zowie will make an XL version, as all larger pads to my knowledge are faster.

From my experience with my Logitech G604. The problem with the hard pad WAS the small adjustments to the mouse. I tried the Roccat Raivo and Alumic and both of them had their problems with my stock mousefeet and skates from Corepad. Just yesterday, I switched to a cheap, cloth pad and WOW, no weird tracking issues and no weird movement issues. Actually, there were no issues at all. I ordered a glorious sitch mousepad and I'm looking to buy the Hayate Otsu once it's available. BTW, my sensitivity is 1600 DPI. I even put a microfiber cloth under my wrist to lessen th sweat picked up by my hard pads but they still needed a wipe every few minutes

Switched from a cloth ( Logitech G640 & Glorious XXL ) to a hard ( hybrid) pad Razer Sphex V2. Literally the best move in my gaming life. This pad is insane. Ultra light , only 0,5 mm in thickness and incredibly easy to clean. The feel is in between a cloth and hard pad , with speed and proper control. If you look for a new pad on the harder side , give this one a try. With 15-20 bucks it’s on the cheaper side too. Will never go back to cloth, my aim got so much better getting used to it.
