Fun fact: The blue and yellow Toads in NSMB Wii have actual names. They are never mentioned anywhere in-game, nor in the manual, but their names are Bucken-Berry and Ala-Gold. They're nicknames given by the developers that me and my friends now just use as their actual names.

For Super Luigi U. The developers had impossible moments where the faster timer would make it impossible to finish a level, so they decided to have the timer count actual 100 seconds.

Fun fact, Free for All is a mode where you try to kill your opponent to complete the level yourself so its says "Mario Finish" for example.

I’ve played and 100% NSLU, and it is every bit as challenging as he says it is. I found a lot of merit in speedrunning the time attack challenges if you play it through Deluxe.

the "2nd player can place blocks" was actually the main reason I liked NSMBU best, though. I've always found the co-op in this series frustrating rather than fun - you're just getting in the way. But with NSMBU, my sister was able to support me via the gamepad and we beat the hell out of the game! Felt good to cheese levels with the bonus blocks. Also, the overworld was neat. I don't mind the abrupt transitions between themes at all, and I really enjoyed the way the hidden paths construct themselves and connect the world. We played the Luigi DLC and it was fun, too, but I honestly didn't feel any difference in the quality of level design. It was all just kinda "ok", like the series as a whole.

Another cool thing about the coins in NSMB2 is that it finally gives a reason to exist for the time limit. If you had infinite time, collecting many coins in a level wouldn't be as impressive. It doesn't seem very intentional as the game doesn't really play with the time limit regarding coins though, which would've been very cool. Like imagine one NSLU-like stage with only 100s but lot of places to go all field with coins but in many different way and where you have to really master the game and make the most optimal path to get a high score while still being fast enough to finish the stage, that would be a banger.

45:57 There’s actually an explanation as to why you got squashed here. When you groundpound a block and it moves slightly down, Mario’s/Luigi’s hitbox goes down with it. And since you were close to that moving wall, it pushed you into the block that hadn’t been slightly lowered, as such pinning you and killing you.

NSMBDS will always be my favorite, because of how incredibly good the multiplayer versus was. Personally my favorite multiplayer gamemode in the franchise. Also bonus points for unique bosses and just generally good level design. Also, Luigi Poker is the best.

There's one thing that you need to consider: each of these is someone's first Mario. The first couple worlds *have* to be basic, because they're the tutorial. That's also why they do one for each console (though 2 shoulda been a Wario Land, or at least had him as a playable character. I mean, it's all about getting filthy rich, ffs!)

Funnily enough, Wario was intended to be in NSMB2 as the reward for collecting 1M coins as an unlockable and playable character. But the developers found out that the time it would take to put him in the game and fix any potential glitches would push it's release date to NSMB U.

They are fun sure, but if you have the same meal every single day with next to no changes, eventually you are going to want SOMETHING new instead of the same meal. People were just burnt out due to how often they were coming out with barely any changes. Silo isn't trying to say they are not fun (because they can be), he's saying what we and even how Nintendo now feel. The series lost its magic by the third entry, and announcing TWO games, in the same e3, really did not help things. Just cause you enjoy them, does not mean peoples feelings are suddenly invalidated. They are just as valid as your own!

3:30 Big reason the DS and Wii NSMB games sold so well is because they had install bases that were 150 million and 105 million respectively. Where as the 3DS had half that and the Wii U had 1/10th or even 1/15th of that on top of people being sick of the series

I actually grew up with NSMB2, I’m glad someone finally appreciates it. I’ve probably put more hours into coin rush than any other NSMB game, and it even sparked my love for speedrunning. In fact, it’s the first game I ever attempted to speedrun, I believe the fastest run I had was 36 minutes. Sure it’s nowhere near a fast time, but sure, why not.

I guess I represent the minority who actually enjoyed the boost mode of the U version, me being the one on the game pad. There were 3 other players, who, arguably, were less versed with these games than me, so for me it was a change of pace and they had the chance of actually doing stuff. Not to say I didn't hinder them with the platforms by accident ever... With Wii version it was more common for them bubbling up in difficult parts and me clearing the obstacle.

I like that the Wii title added an OP mechanic where if multiple players ground pound in unison it activates a pow effect, most people could see it in use if you ever revisit peach's castle, it's not explained anywhere else but a cute little gimmick to add more life to the co-op, and like I said completely overpowered, but yeah

At one point I figured out that NSMB Wii had a limited number of setups for the item game and was able to figure out exactly how to get all the items every time. I don't know how I figured it out, but I did it enough to know the patterns. When I played multiplayer, I always tried to tell people exactly what to do cause I actually knew somehow.
