I’m about to buy a new car and leaning heavily toward the 4Runner mainly because of its track record for durability, low cost maintenance, and value retention. For most people a car purchase is the second most expensive thing they’ll spend money on after their house. Makes sense to me to buy something you can count on being around for a long time and something that will get you a decent return if you ever sell it. I typically hang onto my cars until they die (I hate car payments) so the value of a 4Runner seems tough to beat IMO.

Toyota quality went down hill over the years. I've had about ten Toyotas over the years all trucks, one car. A few years ago I bought a brand new Camry to save on gas for long trips and within the first year the A/C started leaking water into the car, the entire interior got moldy not just where the leak was it spread everywhere it was so disgusting it looked like it had been sitting at the bottom of a river for years. It's happened to a lot of people there's a class action lawsuit against them over it, apparently it's only Camrys for some reason. My brother bought a New Tacoma in 2017 or 2018 and it started leaking oil with in the first few hundred miles, they had to put new seals in his engine. There not what they used to be.

Good comparison. I have owned both. I loved my 16' 4Runner TRDPRO but found it much more limited when going off-road. I now have the 19' Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon with the 2.0 Turbo engine and I must say the longer that I own it the more I love it. Yeah, It has a few drawbacks for DD but even putting 37" tires on it I still get better MPG than I did with my 4Runner, much better actually. 4Runner=16-18 MPG My Jeep with 37's and a 2.5 inch lift=19.5-22.2 MPG. That's crazy I know but it is a fact. My 4Runner though was much more sporty feeling and handling, def a better DD and the creature comforts where better. Plus there is that Toyota reliability, so far my Jeep has been great, of course, I don't bash it on the rocks like some people do so I feel mine will hopefully treat me better than the others who beat theirs to hell and back. This is my own personal experience of course and is not indicative of everybody else's experience. Good job as always man, Love your work keep it coming!

These are pointless. This is like comparing an ATV to a pickup truck. One is smaller. Shorter. Every angle is better on the smaller, boxy vehicle for off-roading. Now reliability is a different story. Jeep doesn’t stand a chance in that respect.
@robertt20054 жыл бұрын
When I was looking at getting into a mid sized vehicle, the 4Runner and a four door Jeep were my two choices. I do live in Utah so a Jeep may be the best choice when thinking about places like Moab but I wanted something more for taking “Sunday” drives and being able to go off pavement when I could, get into some backcountry alpine lakes to wet a hook plus the reliability had to come into play. So for the type of off roading I do the 4Runner fit the bill, especially with its $40k price tag for a new ‘19 Off-Road Premium at that time. I did add on a 3” OME lift and I’m running a slightly bigger 32” BFG KO2 tires. I’ve had Tacoma’s and a Jeep Cherokee in the past with open diffs so this 4Runner is a big upgrade with its off road features such as a rear locker and crawl control. I don’t see myself using the crawl control much, if at all but I do like the availability of having a rear locker. I have however found myself using the A-Trac more than locking in the rear locker. I’ve had the 4Runner for about a year and a half and I’m very happy with it!

It will last longer but by 7 years mist people buy a newer vechile anyways. What good is having a 400,000k 4R that drives like shit off the dealer lot. Then you are saddled with antiquated, cheap plastic interior with an outdated infotainment system , dog slow transmission and fuel hungry engine. Then you are stuck with this for 15 years. There’s something to say about the legendary reputation Toyota’s have. However, here in N. America, we have Jeep Dealers all over the place and decent warranties if you plan on buying new regularly. But if I were to buy a new Jeep platform myself? I’d buy a Gladiator Sport S, with the Factory Tow Package, where you get the hitch an wiring, brake control, trans an engine oil coolers and most importantly 4:10 gears, combined with the 8 speed automatic will get you the tow ratting all around performance. Then perhaps a Cap over the Bed. With of course a hard top with liner. Plus if you’re able to wait, a nice Diesel Engine Option! But of course you won’t be able to get a front locker or sway bar control, but you still get better articulation than on any IFS setup! Oh yea one more thing, as a Canadian, hows that “free” heath care? Please remember to have fun and stay safe!

I live in northern Michigan and own both of these vehicles. My Jeep JK has 35 inch tires with a upgraded suspension with 3.5 inch lift. My TRD pro is stock from factory. Love driving the jeep with the top off. Don't do any rock crawling around here. But because of the daily driving to work, the comfort, and the handling in snow (we get 150-170 inches of snow) I can't do without the TRD pro. Serious offloading, yes the jeep modified is more capable. But the amount of time utilizing it's full capability is so infrequent that if you need a reliable offloading daily driver, and you get snow, you will probably enjoy the TRD pro more.

As an off roader the Jeep is marginally better. As a daily driver the 4 Runner is head and shoulders above. Combine that with Toyota reliability and resale value and the choice is clear.

Depends where you off road lol. None of my four-wheeling buddies would share that opinion and they drive 4runners. They each have areas where they are better, but don't kid yourself when it comes to if the Jeep is better at doing hard offroad obstacles. You should buy based on what you need, but don't downplay the other's strengths.

Toyota needs to make a 4 runner that has a V8 gas or diesel with front lock and all the features it already has also a 5 speed with a super crawl mode for heavy pulling and increase its towing capacity, also better to access recovery hooks 2 front 2 back and a easier to access trailer plug and then you couldn’t beat it

Appreciate the attention to detail in the specs but it's not an "Off-Road" comparison if you don't take'em off roading. Toyota will kill the Jeep in creature comforts, everyone knows that but Jeep owners don't care so much about those things, and that Rubi will flat out go where that Runner cannot.
