I use Epson's P700 and have no gripes about it. as it is such an improvement over the P600 I used previously. Fotospeed papers don't seem to be widely available in New Zealand, but I must follow up on them as I have used Ilford (semi) gloss baryta for some time and it gives very fine results. There were problems in sourcing the inks during Covid years but that has improved since, I'm pleased to say. I generally avoid using the Carbon Black setting as it empties the light gray cartridge too quickly, though I'd use it for special prints where the Carbon Black does enhance the depth of the blacks.

I had the P900 for 2 years and I tossed it as it was smearing and jamming ALOT!! I switched to a PRO-1000 and the grey areas are purplish. Very unhappy with Canon B&W. Frustrated.

I find the P5000 to be the best printer I have experienced for b&w, by far. B&W is all I do (if a friend needs a color I do it to keep the jets working). Use b&w mode always. Three frustrations: color ink lost very gradually through startup cleaning and the fact that the damn thing will NOT remember settings worth a crap - and will NOT save settings, and the stupid default "darker" setting (ok, I use "dark" so I would have to reset it anyway even if it was on normal). But the results are phenomenal..

Hi Fotospeed. I have a quesstion: When we change the hole set of inks (Canon Pro 300), we have to turn off the power after the print head set in place? Thanks

You should need to, power will need to be on for ink changes. Tim

Is there an additional benefit from Epson‘s „Carbon Black“ setting?

It does give a slightly deeper back in my option. How ever you can see the Light Grey running down very quickly. Tim

How do these printers compare to piezography printers in b&w mode? Does it make sense to maintain a dedicated piezo printer? Thanks

Without properly testing and comparing I could really say in an informed way. But I don't hear of the Piezography printers and ink sets anymore here in the UK. Tim

I would say to get the best b&w prints firstly send your image into photoshop ( if it started life as a colour photo) and convert to grayscale. Remove all colour data that will tinge your print

The Pro-300 has only one gray, the Pro-1000 two.

I'm convinced, it is not about the printer - as long as it is a pigment ink printer - but about the paper and the ink. For instance, if you are serious with b&w prints, use a set of carbon ink. Where there is no color, there is no possibility of color tints. When you have 10 different gray inks, your print's gray scale will be much finer. Of course, you can't buy such inks as OEM, you need to go to independent producers - and here those who produce carbon inks are very rare. But they are there, and if you search a little, you will find them.
