Suffered with the yips on short putts for many years and have tried everything including armlock and wristlock. I always end up going back to the saw/claw style. I always thought reverse claw was right hand on top and left hand below the right but in a claw style (for a right handed golfer) and didn't realise the Tommy Fleetwood grip is the reverse claw.

Great timing Rick! I just switched to the prayer grip from standard. Like you mentioned, it keeps the shoulders level, and I feel like the putter swings more freely. I've been delivering more energy to the ball with less effort, which is great because I tend to leave putts short. I was starting to get very mechanical and technical. Prayer grip just lets me roll it!

What’s the prayer grip like on long putts? It looks like it would be accurate for short putts but I kinda feel that it wouldn’t be as good to get enough power for the ball to reach a 60 foot putt with any accuracy or relative proximity. Thoughts?

Reverse Claw Grip. When I first got into Golf a little more seriously, I was constantly watching Fleetwood because of his Iron game. I started using this new grip I made up this year and it’s a game changer. #8 the two finger RH. Place your left hand middle finger on one side of the grip, ring finger on the right side of the grip. Your two fingers look like a claw. Wrap right hand around your left with your two left fingers gripping the front and back of the grip below your right hand. Small pencil grip works best. I can freaking feel everything. It’s amazing for short medium range putts.

I have had a very unconventional putting grip for almost 20 years now. Its pretty close to the traditional putter grip but with my right-hand I run the grip through my index finger and middle finger. Then i curl my index finger on my right-hand on the top of my grip to cause the flat of the grip to match with the flat of my index finger. It helped me a lot with keeping the face square through contact.

I used to be a standard gripper but I couldn’t sink anything, not even 2 footers, too flicky. Changed to trying the claw grip that actually worked into a reverse claw grip. Which is the exact grip I’ve been using for the last year, I love it. A lot more stable and control within close proximity of the hole, holds its line for me very well, anything long I go back to standard grip to get it close for a two put. Reverse claw is what works for me! ☺️

Bought a chipper which I love, and was using standard grip with that. Now I've switched back to standard grip for my putter as well and my putting scores have got much better. Will stick with standard for now - oh, and with my index finger on my RH down the side for a little more stability.

I refer to the reverse claw as the pencil claw grip, because I feel like if I replaced the putter with a fat pencil, I'd be able to steadily write even without wrapping my fingers all the way around. It restocked my confidence putting to the point where I can go back to the original standard grip but keep the stability in my stroked that i gained from using the pencil claw grip.

I use basically a standard grip with both forefingers running down the handle. Very stable, good for both long and short puts and I find it very easy to control. I also have a large grip as then all my fingers are on the handle and not overlapped on my hands which I found reduces stability.

Rick, enjoyed the putting grip review. I have one more for you to look up and review: Paul Runyon. A short hitter, Paul developed his short game, including putting, to a high enough level that he was able to win 29 PGA tournaments including two PGA Championships. As best as I can describe it, it is the standard grip with the palms rolled under. It was his feeling that rolling the palms of both hands under the club took wrist flex out of the putting stroke.

I found the reverse grip to drastically improve my line. When I put it through the ringer, I noticed I was dropping even more putts than I typically do from 8 feet in. However I found once I got outside of say 12-15 feet that my lag putting dropped off substantially. And maybe it’s one of those things where practice will help establish pace, but I found my ability to two putt dropped off significantly

I have a fairly long 36" putter, it's a Wilson with the stock grip (kind of a fat cone with a flat front) and it's perfect for me. I choke down to the bottom of the grip with my left hand and position the rest of the grip against my left forearm. Right hand goes below left, actually on the metal shaft, but it's only there to guide my shoulders and chest. All the aiming and stability is in the left hand and arm. Changed my game big time

I use three grips because of the power needed to deliver the length of the putt versus the accuracy needed. Putts over 60 feet - standard grip (right hand low). Putts between 15-60 feet - left hand low. Finally, putts of 15 feet or less - opposing hands. The more power needed results in less accuracy, the less needed results in more accuracy. Works for me. I use a face balanced/center shafted mallet putter with a straight through swing.
@timdanks21862 жыл бұрын
I have played the reverse grip for over 35 years. I 'invented' it, because when I started playing golf I found my right hand dominated my putting stroke and I would flick at the ball. Having an old style blade putter I experimented putting left handed and found that having my left hand low took my hands out of my putting stroke and was much smoother and more consistent. I contemplated putting a LH putter in my bag, but then discovered I could have the same effect if I putted with a left handers grip with a right handed putter. It was quite a talking point when I started because no-one had seen it before, and no professionals in the pro tours used it. So it was strange to slowly watch touring pros taking up 'my' putter grip. After thirty five years it feels completely natural, and if I ever take a standard grip on a putter it feels really strange.

I use a little twist on the standard grip that I’ve been doing for 50 years. While I do extend my left index finger down the shaft, I also overlap my right pinkie finger on top of my middle finger on my left hand. It just feels more like my normal overlap grip that I use for full shots, and my hands feel more together. Not sure anyone else does it this way…but it has worked for me.

My style over the years has migrated to a modified standard grip with both thumbs on the front flat of the grip and both index fingers down the sides of the grip. It’s odd I’m sure (I’ve never seen anyone else putt like this) but it feels the most comfortable and stable to me. I’ve always used a center shafted putter because my stroke is more pendulum style, straight back and straight forward. About 25 years ago I switched to claw grip and was wildly more successful than I had ever been before because I would no longer break my wrists on the short ones. 3 months ago I got into the worse putting slump I’ve had since going to the claw and switched back to a more std grip and grip way down so I’m more hunched over. The hole just looks a little bigger when my head is closer to the ground. Not enough rounds to know if I will get out of my slump, but my psyche is better right now.
