There's a PDF online from Electronics Today 1977 with an instruction how to make a DIY ignition secondary probe. If I remember it right, they suggest a maybe 2" wide strip of tin foil wrapped around the ignition lead, to that foil you connect a 1nF capacitor (different sizes can be used to adjust voltage, the same goes for the width of the tin foil) to ground, an a 1 megaohm resistor parallell to the capacitor. Then you just connect the scope to the tin foil wrap. Similar to the wire wrap, but with a way to limit the voltage = less risk of BBQing the scope. As far as i know the store bought secondary probes use this basic construction.

Thank you Darren. You may want to capture the same ignition event simultaneously with all 4 probes connected to the four channels? You would avoid whatever might be caused by differences/changes between different combustion events. Another economy trick is to use a paper clip around the ignition wire, one of those that look like a butterfly where you press on the levers to open them. Then you connect your gator with the test lead to it. It will work as a capacative probe, like the pico, rotkee and hantek.

Would the wire coil not be a bit risky for your scope as it’s not grounded in the event of a lead arcing out and sending all that energy straight to the scope. Just a thought. Great comparison of probes here.
@MechanicMindset2 жыл бұрын
Possibly. Not sure how much a risk it is without the scope being part of the voltage differential (ie if it’s not connected to chassis ground, current shouldn’t flow through it). I was going to try actually, see what happens! Thanks

Using the preset channel for configuration for the first two and a custom one for the Rotkee skewed the comparison test results. You should have revisited the first two and using custom settings it might have been possible to get a better trace. The only one which showed the combustion adequately was the Rotkee.

@MechanicMindset2 жыл бұрын
For the coil of wire I’d say yes. But it’s not needed for the others. I think it’s already built in
@ulfg14092 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you may get away with not using one, but there's no downside to using it and it reduces the risk of damaging the scope. Might as well put it on there, better safe than sorry. Especially as using a 2204 implies your budget may be limited, wouldn't want to risk damaging it.
@ulfg14092 жыл бұрын
@@MechanicMindset I mentioned a DIY probe in a separate post, using tin foil around the wire and a capacitor connected to ground. This gives you a capacitive voltage divider, about 1pF capacitance between the ignition wire and tin wrap, and 1000 times larger capacitance between the wrap and ground thanks to the added capacitor. This makes a ~1000:1 voltage divider, different sizes can be used for other attenuations. Those voltages may sitt be a bit high for a 2204, so attenuating isn't a bad idea. You never want to see the overvoltage warning when using the scope at its highest voltage range, you know it's more than the scope can show but you have no idea how much more. Could easily be enough to damage it.

I think the is a reason why they all have a clamp to put on chassi ground.. This amount of voltage will create a spike inside the test leads like any coil ..so without that ground cable you will burn your scope
@MechanicMindset2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I need to check where the ground connects, the voltage is quite low because I think there is an attenuator, but if there is a fault and the spark leaks, it should protect.

I cut my teeth using BIG, SUN Engine Analyzers in the 1980's; the scope patterns were AWESOME. Waveforms were stable, predictable, repeatable & analog. When SUN introduced the INTERROGATOR, and subsequent models with DIGITAL scope, the waveforms got choppy and went to hell. In 2024, the one thing that hasn't seen improvement from legacy SUN ewuipment is the IGNITION SECONDARY WAVEFORM 😢.
