I have a love hate relationship with the bosses in Super Mario Odyssey. So here’s the thing; In my opinion Super Mario Odyssey has some of the best boss fights in all of the Super Mario series, but while some of the bosses are really great highlights of the game, there are also some bosses that are … well not. This kind of leaves us with an eternal question? Why are some of the bosses in Super Mario Odyssey better than others? What is it that makes a Super Mario Odyssey boss really great, why are some of them so annoying, and most important of all? Which out of all the Super Mario Odyssey Boss fights is the best one, and which one is the absolute worst? Actually, the mummy spawns aren't random at all. If you'll notice, the mummies always spawn in coordination with his attacks.. for example, the spawn in a trail of his fists when they fly at you, so it'd make sense that you'd fall into them on your way down. And when they spawn in front of you while dodging his fist slam attack, they always spawn in front of the knuckles. You can see this more earlier in the video when he calls down the icicles, that when he slams his palms down, mummies spawn beneath him, perhaps to try and teach the player that his fists corelate with the mummies.

While their spawns may correlate to his attacks, that information needs to be clearly conveyed to the player. If, as his fists fly at you, some bones rattle off and quickly grow into mummies, the player can easily see the connection. If you're just fighting the boss blind, it can be hard to notice the pattern to the mummies spawning while also watching (and dodging) the more obvious attacks

Octomozart I found cool for the reason that you get to fight it across the entire seaside kingdom. It's unique in that way. No weird glowy boss barrier, you get to navigate around the terrain, while all the typical enemies are around you. If you studied your environment and learned about where external dangers lied, you had some extra knowledge to help you. I found the other common enemies lying around, like the squishy bubble guys that you capture and squirt water at you, to be a danger while fighting octomozart

I got to admit, the first time i fought the octopus, I didn't know you had to keep spraying his head after washing away his lava hair. Octo is actually one of my favorite boss fights in the game. It helps that the little octo captures are one of my favorite captures in the game, but my favorite element of the fight is the fighting arena, or lack there of. Most boss fights take place inside these little fenced off controlled environments. You can usually just smell a boss fight coming based on the room you just stepped into. Octo takes you by surprise and turns the whole level into his battle field, he can almost go anywhere. This makes him feel like a threat if not to me but to everyone in the level, he's on the loose and you need to take him down.

Trying the robobrood boss fight without captures is straight up a Shadow of the colossus battle and that's one of the most memorable things I have ever seen in a Mario game. Also, honestly I always try to defeat the bunny girl as fast as I can just because of how annoying and loud her laugh is.

The difficulty in the squid boss is getting lucky about aiming where he's going to go, because he's fast enough that if you aim where he is, you'll miss. It's hard to do this without running out of water before actually connecting. The real worst is Cookatiel, because the hit boxes for the ramp up to it are smaller than the ramps themselves, making it often feel like you're just falling through platforms you should be landing on, and because anything that references vomit is automatically worse for doing so. It's annoying on both a mechanical & thematic level. (It's possible that it's more of a camera angle issue than a hit box issue, but they lock the camera angle while you attempt to climb, so it's difficult to know with any certainty. A more aerial view might improve the mechanics of that climb.)

The UFO would be 100x better if you could damage him by trickjumping on top of him during his laser phase and ground pounding the glass flower chamber while it’s flipped on top of him. Also, the brootal mech is probably my single favourite boss in the game, it’s just so fun and the skill ceiling is unbelievably high with the proper speedrun strats where you never capture the bird and stay in the air the whole time.

I don't know that I have seen many gaming videos that are as objective and well informed about the actual game design element of games as Ceave's. if there's one boss i cannot understand for the life of me, it's torkdrift (the wooded kingdom's ufo boss). after defeating spewart, you get sent back to the odyssey and go forward. from there, you have to blow up a wall with some tanks, then climb a vine and go up to a more open area where you have to blow up a path upwards with more tanks. after climbing some more, it reaches the logical conclusion with you hitting moving targets with the tanks, so you'd expect the boss to be based around the tanks, right? ...and then the boss takes place ENTIRELY AS AN UPROOT

Music is a VERY important part in boss fights. I put Peaches Castle over the dragon boss fight, and it made it feel so much different. It felt a lot less epic, and I made more mistakes because the music made the boss fight seem easier.

I think Odyssey is the god of going in the middle. It lets you choose between linear story and nonlinear side quests, fast or consistent boss strats, choose normal platforming vs. fancy cap dives, etc.

I actually struggled with Knucklotec. It's not that the fight itself is hard, but the hands are so annoying to control, especially with Knucklotec throwing those stupid ice shards at you to slow you down. I ended up getting hit by something more often than I was able to hit Knucklotec because I found it really annoyingly difficult to get to him, so I died to him a few times. Mollusque-Lanceur also suffers from being annoying, but he isn't even hard. He just takes an unnecessarily long time to beat. Torkdrift is fine enough compared to those two.

I think a natural way to increase the difficulty of the Knucklotec boss would be to turn the sand on the floor of the boss arena into the quicksand from above ground. That way, you have choices to make. Either you stand on the ice with reduced traction, or you stay in the quicksand and have to keep jumping to not die. It's an extension of mechanics found in the overworld, and raises the difficulty of the boss without making the fight unfair.

Octo-Mozart's biggest problem is the downtime phase. He uniquely gets a fight where you're chasing him all around the world he's in, but it's completely squandered because it's just the exploration part of the gameplay without the exploration; you just walk at him. If it were less like being a slow-moving projectile and more like driving a jet-ski, it could've at least felt cool and satisfying to play, even if it's so simple that every attempt at the boss looks the same. Maybe you shouldn't have to capture that same enemy, but instead a variant that's just the same but faster.
