Static Shock. Because it establishes his origin, all his villains origin, and why the city needs a superhero (due to the cops being out gunned by the bang baby’s), and why the police are so quick to accept Static as a hero and work with him. It establishes so much without making it complicated, it is highly efficient

45:00 Sal, you gave me a new respect for Jason Todd in the Back Issues on The Cult. Red Hood aside, I feel like that’s the best place for Jason in the Robin line-up. While Dick is the son Bruce can be proud of, and Tim is the one who “gets him” intellectually and emotionally, and Damian is his blood, Jason is, as Frank Miller puts it, a good soldier. He can count on Jason not to fall apart, ‘cause he’s been through some shit.

I dont consider this the best, or even my favorite, but I really love Gwenpools origin. It's steeped in continuity while also not having anything to do with it. It's not derived from any particular character. She's a person from our world that got swept into the Marvel universe because the entire multiverse was destroyed in secret wars. She's not a chosen one or anything grand. Just person that now exists and I really vibe with that.

I love Superman, but over and over again I see people who say he's so hard to write or hard to relate to and I've come to realize that it's not the idea Superman's detractors are Snyder fan edgelords who are emotionally damaged and hate the very concept of heroism. See, DC has hobbled Superman as a character while at the same time building up Batman again and again. Superman's origin is great and simple, but at the same time there's a big element missing: choice. Batman is an active character while Superman is a static character. Batman had to learn, train, grow and improve and BECOMES Batman. Superman just IS good. Everything about him is given to him. He's perfect you see. He's better than you, better than me, better than EVERYONE else and on top of that has all the powers you can imagine. I make the comparison to Forrest Gump. Hear me out, put the gun down and lower the pitchforks. In "Forrest Gump," things happen to Forrest and he does what he's told by others. Historical events happen around him and help shape him into the person that he is. Also, Forrest has abilities that no one else does: He discovers he can just ping pong better than anyone, he can run across the country and literally inspire others just by doing what he's good at. Why do I say that DC keeps hobbling him? If a writer tries to add something interesting to the character, check your calendar, because a new crisis is on the way and it's gonna be reboot time. Superman gets reset back to the beginning so the basic story gets retold and his Rogues Gallery gets reset back to Lex, Zod, Doomsday, and maybe Brainiac if we have the time. I know we're tired of watching the Waynes get gunned down in that freaking alley. But is anyone else tired of the reboot-death-cycle with Superman that causes so much of the Super-verse left in the dust. Crap, I'm starting to rant again and I'll stop here and just say that DC is hurting Superman and then hiding their hands with reboots.

I think the preferred term for "native Americans" are "indigenous people" or "first nations people." I think the first, indigenous, makes the most sense. They were the first inhabitants, so it's a descriptive term. 44:30 I really wish they played more with the Damien origin and the inherent tension that that makes. When you have a family of adopted children, and then have a biological child, there's an element of jealousy innate in that. Damien offers a great opportunity to play with the found/chosen vs. biological family distinction. "The Blood of the Covenant is thicker than the Water of the Womb" kind of stuff. Of course, the problem is that Damien should NOT be Robin, or he should be the WORST Robin to create that tension. They've played with him learning from the other Robins (especially in the pre-Flashpoint Dickbats books), but I feel like the abandoned that very interesting dynamic for the last decade, with only brief resurgences (Batman and Robin Eternal, brief flashes in the Tom King Batman run, etc.) 1:03:00 I love deep cuts into those old books. Like when Slam Bradley showed up in later Batman comics. He was a Detective Comics character PRE-27, so he is older than Batman. Or when people remember that the magician Giovanni Zatara (Zatanna's dad) made his debut in Action Comics 1, the same issue with Superman.

Unfortunately the whole "Native American" name problem is very divisive even among the Native Americans. For one, they are aren't a united people and treating them like one can piss some of them off hard, and for another some prefer the name Indian, or just referring to them as their independent tribe names. It's a whole quagmire.
@christophercheck15903 жыл бұрын
@@infernaldisdain8051 That's fair, but from a sociological perspective, there IS a benefit to referring to the original inhabitants here with a descriptive name, for the same reason we refer to the pre-Classical Greeks as the "Dorians" or the tribal nomads who came out of central Asia as the "steppe peoples." It allows categorization when general statements are required. That doesn't mean they aren't ALSO members of their individual tribes ("Scythian" and "steppe nomad" are not exclusive terms, nor are "doric tribesmen" and "ancient Myceneans") I think the issue with "Native American," for many, is just that it emphasizes the American title, which is a European title of the landmass, rather than treating the landmass through a more neutral lens. And, frankly, while I'd respect the wishes of a person who wants to be called an "Indian," if they're not from India I find the label inaccurate and confusing, even if they don't think it's offensive.

Let's talk about some animated Superheroes, too. The Powerpuff Girls. Literally, I have no idea how this is science, Everything Nice is impossible to quantify as an ingredient, clearly there's some magic involved, but you know, Professor Utonium, he just wanted a family and it actually worked out. I don't know if he's just crazy and wanted to see if he could even create people, or if he just couldn't have a family the traditional way, but he's actually a pretty decent as a dad once the Girls come into being. And they kind of changed the origin later on with Mojo Jojo creating them by bumping into Utonium making him accidentally add Chemical X, but this was before even Mojo was mutated, so that's actually kind of fun how their arch nemesis is also involved with their creation. Danny Phantom. I mean, it's right there in the opening of the show, his parents try to make a portal to the Ghost Zone, but it doesn't activate properly, and he accidentally hits a button when he goes to check out what went wrong, it activates and he mutates into a ghost kid. It's actually pretty cool. He initially uses his powers to get back at bullies, but then he uses them to fight the ghosts because he's a good kid at heart, no big sense of guilt like Spider-Man to be responsible, but he still has the issues of being a teen where he's bullied, and has hopes and dreams he can't make happen to because he's neglecting other responsibilities because he's off fighting ghosts and whatnot to keep the world safe. Ben 10. Probably one of the coolest origins for a superhero in animation. Once again, it's a total accident, but Ben finds the Omnitrix and it straps itself to his wrist and essentially bonds itself to his DNA, and it allows the wearer to access Alien DNA harvested from throughout the Universe and turn them into the alien of their choice from silhouettes on the watchface. You get so many superheroes in one with Ben 10, every power imaginable, there's an alien that can do it. The best thing about this is that despite the thing being indestructible for the most part, Ben slamming his hand down on the thing caused it to give him different aliens than what he chose, and it forced him to think outside the box to fight crime or defeat invading aliens or whatever. Eventually he learns to just accept whatever it gives him because the watch seems to know what is needed in every situation he's in, but it's still up to him to determine what needs to be done once he's the alien. Oh and the Omnitrix wasn't even designed for superhero antics, it was just for simple communication and negotiation between species as beings could better understand one another by literally walking in their shoes. It wasn't even meant for Ben, it was meant for his Grandpa Max who was part of the Plumbers, an organization that dealt with extra terrestrial phenomena. Ben achieves the goal of the Omnitrix a few times, but its creator is proud of how Ben has found to use it as it has helped many people and even he's even saved the universe and I think even the multiverse a couple of times. Never underestimate kid superheroes, they can do quite a lot. The ones I listed never had a super dramatic origin, but they always have arcs of being selfish and the powers force them to be responsible with their powers and they're really more a metaphor about growing up and using your talents to make something of yourself and to contribute to society, you know, stuff that kids to think about when they're watching a show about people fighting monsters and aliens and robots and ghosts and stuff, but the message secretly gets in their brains and hopefully it sticks. Well okay, that might be a stretch for the Powerpuff Girls, they're in Kindergarten, but they are a team with diverse personalities and interests that create conflict, but they still find a way to work together, still important stuff. So I guess really, their origins aren't necessarily that important in making them who they are, these are all kids and teens, the shows are their origin story because it's growing up, and nothing bad had to happen to make growing up already hard enough, they don't need planets exploding and death to make them extraordinary to still be heroes.

Ngl I think Spiderman has the best origin. A teenager choosing to not involve himself in a crime(something all of us would do as well). And because of it loses his father figure. Then decides he will always get involved. In the case of Peter getting the great power great responsibility speech you could almost say Peter misinterprets what Uncle Ben meant. As Ben likely would not have wanted him to get involved powers or no powers. Then lives his life based on guilt that he was irresponsible(which is debatable).

It is not debatable.

This is a hard one but for me, Spider-Man(I never wanna see it on screen again, but Amazing Fantasy 15 is a perfect introduction for any superhero, for me and still the best version of the origin I think) Wolverine(Weapon X origin) Tim Drake, Iron Man(Movie version), Batman(Year One or Mask of the Phantasm version), Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan is solid, Captain America is great, Superman is great, basically every solid superhero has a solid origin so it is hard to choose. But best supervillain origins? that would be a conversation.

Old question, but deserves an answer: There's a series of Thor comics based on the Ring Cycle which show the Asgardians from before the medieval Ragnarok. When Odin was reformed, he chose to change Thor this time to break the Ragnarok cycle. This is why modern Thor is blond instead of red haired, among other things. 616 Thor's Mother is Gaia and Phoenix increasing his power beyond Agardian levels. But he still didn't defeat They Who Sit Above In Shadow (the sowers and reapers of Ragnarok), but instead Odin's other son fulfilled that task, scaring them away with stories.

Iron fist. God love him, has one of the worst origins in comics. His father was obsessed with with an invisible city, forcing his family to pursue his ambitious, then causing his family to suffer a plane crash. His mother survives only to be eaten by wolves. Danny goes on to be trained by monks to be Kung lun's immortal protector. Then he abandons his responsibilities to take revenge on the man that wronged his family... it feels like it's trying to hard to be a comic origin lol

The origin of iron fist’s father coming from Kung lun was good, and explained his obsession to returning.
