Whimsical Deer Real-Time Watercolor Tutorial

I had a wonderful time creating this painting from a drawing I did in alcohol marker a couple years ago. It reminds me of a vintage storybook. I hope you enjoy this real-time tutorial!

I like the real-time edited tutorials. The voice-overs are great and you are able to focus on your painting so that we can see exactly how you do it when you don’t have to explain as you go. I am rewatching this now that I got the Gansai Tambi paints (from Splendith in the Netherlands 🇳🇱, if anyone is looking in Europe). I appreciate you leaving the drawing and painting in real time, it is clear you narration flows out of you very easily if you are not worried about painting at the same time. I absolutely adore this painting. Those beautiful muted colours work so very well together. I’m so pleased you persevered and put in the butterfly, it ties in beautifully with the deer looking curiously toward it. The magical trail made by the butterfly was inspirational! Thanks so much Lindsay! You asked about viewer preference for video type. I personally much prefer being able to watch a creation in real time. The voice over worked well too, and I’m pleased you feel more comfortable this way, than trying to talk whilst painting. Apart from anything else, it’s important that you yourself maintain the enjoyment of painting, and trying to speak whilst painting has to detract from your pleasure. It’s a no pressure way to experiment, as you will only make a voiceover for those paintings, or drawings you are happy with. A win win situation. Best wishes from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🖌🎨👩🏻‍🎨❤️

Lol, the Want Monster has had her eye on the regular Gansai Tambi paints for a while now, and now that she knows about these beauties, she’s drooling all over again! Ha, good thing they’re out of stock right now. I love the idea of tracing coloring pages for this type of painting though. I’m already getting fun ideas. I love how this painting turned out, too. Especially with the butterfly right by the deer’s nose. So sweet!

If your 0.3mm lead is breaking and you otherwise like that size, buy a softer 0.3mm lead. You can get at least up to a 3b in 0.3mm Your deer is so pretty. I'm so glad those paints are out of stock, ha. I don't need them, don't even like the colors that much, but this painting is want monster food, for sure!

This is very cool. I appreciate how you detail how you bring your inspiration from a previous work. Makes me feel like what I do now isn't just done and stuck away but can be referenced and used again. I love the color pallette and added it to my wish list. My current water color is a set of inktense pencil. The deer is very whimsical and the added butterfly with dust trail really pulls it together. As much as I loved the crayon painting from last week, I am in LOVE with this deer! Whimsical without being juvenile. I feel like he's a zoomed in section of a much larger painting with a castle in the background and those ladies with the conical hats and sheer veils. Like from old tapestries. I have a cross-stitch pattern like that. Makes me want to stitch it (that would take forever) then paint a picture of it! I love this format of video - real time with your voice over. Not that I don't enjoy all your videos, but like you said, when you don't have to worry about telling us every step along the way, it goes faster. Plus, I think you may enjoy the whole painting process more. But that may be me projecting. LOL! And it's fine that your glasses appeared in the corner. You are human after all!

Hullo Lindsay, I truly appreciate and enjoy watching this kind of video! You are truly inspirational and such an amazing instructor! I finally purchased the 48 set of Gansai paints after Kasey Golden showed off her set she got at the Ghibli museum in Japan. I had been a bit disappointed in my Ghibli scene paintings and after getting these non western paints it was so much easier to get the Studio Ghibli look! Lovely painting and very well done video too! Thank you. I will say one of the big reasons I stopped giving classes at the Library and Senior center is I got so wrapped up in what I was doing I was forgetting about giving instructions about how to do what I was doing! Talking as you work is VERY hard to do! I do not know how so many do it! Voice over is the best way to narrate and explain a process, but it takes even more time when putting a video together! As I said before Well Done Lindsay!

@@thefrugalcrafter really you're doing a great job! It's totally seamless I did not notice a difference! However yeah that's a lot more work for every single video so you really need to consider your time versus also what brings you the most joy and I think the voice-over seems to help you really relax and it gives you more opportunity to think it through while you're painting it and then when you actually do the voice-over your thoughts are organized. But either way you're just such a good teacher it really I don't think it's going to matter we just want you to be happy and feel the joy of Art. I'm a professional to but it don't make it my full-time job. One of things I noticed was that it immediately made art Less Fun. And people who enjoy your style enjoy it even more when they know you're having fun.

Deer ia so cute. I will say, though, that the shape of the first watercolor deer is nicer than the 2nd. I figure that talking to your fans and trying to paint at the same time (something I could not do!) and with a set of colors is reason enough, that's for sure. I just found the 1st deer more slender and graceful. But no matter as I doubt everyone thought nothing of it, I didn't, but I wondered if you wanted feedback. Let me know if you don't want it, K? Anyway. I recently bought this set of Gansai Tambi paints also. I love the colors too, so beautiful and vintage. Your colors in the 2nd deer are fantastical . I love that idea with this set. It worked, beautifully,Lindsay.! I soon will start my Fairy Journal and I thought, as you painted, how great those colors will be for the journal. I love this deer and the style you used! I was intrigued that you said some of the colors granulate; I looked it up and you're right; some do have PBk11. The Ecru Beige, interestingly, is made from Prussian, PY42 and white, so it must be a granulating PY42. And yeah, the cobalt turquoise is a hue made from phthalo blue and PY3 + white. Very impressed with how you lifted that butterfly and redid it!!

This set was actually next on my list…HOWEVER…I got my new paints Friday…OOOHHH…Lindsay…Rosa Gallery mono-pigmented set of 21..I took the white out, TRYING to decide which of my QOR, DS or Schminke single pigments to squeeze in, or many just get a slightly bigger tin to fit the ROSA’s and My other favorites. I am in awe…they act a LOT like my QOR (I only have 4 QOR and originally was trying to decide between the primary set or Rosa..SO glad I chose Rosa!!); but they actually seem to have even more of a pigment load than QOR. I stayed up all night Fri night doing swatches, mixing charts..I was having so much fun that I made my swatches into kitties and “balls of yarn” 😂 I just got home from an appt and told everyone I talked to about my new paints..getting ready to FINALLY do some painting! Already started the main one that prompted this after testing the mixes and glazing yesterday! I THOUGHT I would need to use a different yellow for my underpainting..probably my inktense yellow..in several layers since it HAS the permanence..but wasn’t bright enough for what I needed…THEN, I tried the cad yellow in my new set, (light AND medium PY35) both were VERY bright, staining AND when I glazed with “Flame Red” (PO73, transp, aka pyrrol Orange), and Cad Red (PR108, Gran, semi-transp)….I was so excited I called my friend and my daughter asking “WHICH ONE!?!” at about 2am!! 😂 At my best friend’s (and my bank acct’s😂) urging; I’m going to hold off on any new paints..for now. I’m going to play for a few days before I start playing mad scientist with my Chinese mediums and Xuan paper…😁
