I was born in Pikeville, KY. We lived in the bottom of Ivel along the river. It was a farm that my grandparents owned. They had chickens, Hogs, cows. I remeber when it was time to slaughter the hogs. They rendered their own lard. They had a huge cast iron pan they built a fire around. Huge garden. Daddy moved up to norther Indiana became didn’t want to work in the mines and die like his daddy did. Every summer I would go back to Ky and worked the farm with granddaddy. Would help him put his lines out in the river to catch fish. Worked the garden. Miss those times.

Kids today have no idea what it means to live the way you do. My husband is willing to move back to KY with me on a small place big enforcement a garden, chickens. I want a cow for fresh milk and Hogs. Ppl wouldn't know what to do today if the didn't have a store to get their food from. My husband grew up in the country because his dad was a small church preacher.

My grandfather lived in Tennessee and drank his coffee from the saucer that went with the cup and said it was to cool it a little quicker so he could drink it because my grandmother made the coffee on the woodstove in the kitchen. Even as a child, I was allowed to drink coffee and I liked it because my grandmother would fix me some papaw coffee, he liked it with cream and a lot of sugar. I always sat next to him at the table so he was the closest person to me when we ate so when he poured his coffee into the saucer and drank it with both hands, I did too because that's how I thought you were supposed to do it. I did it that way the whole summer we spent down at the farm and it wasn't until we got home and I asked my mom for some papaw coffee and she gave it to me in a coffee mug, I asked why she fixed it that way and she explained to me that that was the way your supposed to drink it and that my grandfather was the only person she ever knew that drank it the way he did. I still prefer the saucer when I can use one, it does cool it a little quicker, and I like keeping that memory of my grandfather alive. He passed away around 1980, I'm now 56 and I've forgotten a lot of my childhood, except my times with my grandfather.

I so enjoyed watching this...and snickering at some of the Conversation. I relate to buttering both sides of my bread in a skillet,,also...I called it a Southern thing! Thanks for posting and may God take care of and Bless you both! 😊

Older folks back in the day all sipped there coffee from a saucer, at least in my part of the woods.. lol I think it was a habit handed down from their ancestors.

My grandaddy sipped his coffee from a saucer too..dipped his toast in it.. I believe it was so hot they had to pour in a saucer because you know it was made from a stove top gas percolator.. Oh yes butter that homemade bread and toast in a skillet with pear butter or strawberry fig.. yum yum

When I was a kid we hauled water and feed for hogs, we took a 5 gallon bucket of water and a 5 gallon bucket of feed every day. It was only about 200 yards. It wasn't no half mile, but that was part of our chores.
