How do I know that it’s the surface igniter that needs to be replaced and not the whole thing? I have a cooktop.

My WP cooktop started acting up tonight. the igniter sparks but keeps clicking...all of the igniters spark and I can even get flames up (as if to cook), but the clicking won't go away and the igniter keeps sparking. I pulled the plug from underneath. I don't know what's going on. I need to be able to trouble shoot this to find out what is actually wrong with my unit.

My igniter wire has fallen off and is under the top lid of the stove. How can I lift the stove's top lid? Thanks for any help.

@@travishoffman9157 Sorry, I can't remember exactly. It wasn't very hard. It's my parents' stove and I don't have access to it now. Think if you do a search on the topic, you can probably find it. That was probably what I did. I do remember that the screw holding the igniter in place had a corroded head and was a little difficult to remove. Afterwards, I bought replacement stainless steel screws for all the igniters, just as a precaution. Good luck. EDIT: In case I wasn't clear: I found a way to lift the top, but can't remember how.

You have to remove all burners, then lift the top lid. If screws holding it are rusted, soak it well with penetrating oil for few days, or they will snap. Don't use power tool. Screwdriver only

yeah, the screws on my 6 year old stove have rusted shut, tried unscrewing and broke off the bolt heads
