We have an old Whirlpool side by side in our shop that works like a champ. Bought it used 15 years ago and have never had an issue. Just had to replace the waterline to the dispenser, the water filter and the filter housing. Cost $63 total. Thanks to your videos, everything came back together in a snap. I really appreciate your detail, clean videos and instructions! You have saved us a ton of money and time!

What were your issues? Mine quit making ice and dispensing water. I removed the filter but still no ice or water. I can hear the motors working when the tabs on the door are pushed down to get either.

@repairclinic . I did replace my filter housing. My fridge is working back to normal! We have cold water and ice again!! 🥳🙌 The hard part in doing this was pulling out that 2 tubes connected to the filter housing, my daughter helped me, and she was able to disconnect it. The rest, I've done it! I felt good after finishing the work, proud of myself! 😆

If you are one of the unfortunate people who, like me, found it IMPOSSIBLE to remove the feed lines from the filter housing like they did in this video, note that they skipped over a very crucial step. Those gray nubs right at the housing are quick release valves (I didn't know this at first and the one on my line back to the solenoid actually detached and slid down while I was fooling with it), and they have to be pushed towards the housing while you also pull the line out. This is practically impossible to do if you have anything other than baby hands, so do yourself a favor and remove the line from the solenoid in the back (also quick release) to give yourself enough play to pull the housing completely out of fridge. Job goes from knuckle bashing to easy immediately!

Just finished replacing my filter housing. As some of the posters commented below, I also did the same mistake trying to pry the grey nubs out first. I was trying so hard to pull the lines out in a very tight spot where I can barely fit my hand. Keep the grey nub pressed towards the housing, suddenly the line comes out so easily. Also, it was not easy to pull out the old housing, have to press down the aluminum frame below slightly down to get the housing out.

Thank you for this video! It saved me a costly appliance repair bill for sure. Just to clarify for anyone who had the same problem as I did. When disconnecting the water lines from the old housing, make sure you push the gray fittings all the way towards the housing, and pull the water lines in the opposite direction.

I CANNOT get the water lines disconnected from the housing !! So mad. I'm pushing the gray fittings in as hard as I can and I can't get the hoses to come out no matter what. I tried pushing them in with little wrenches as well as pliers, I couldn't get it.. Any suggestions ... I thought I could do this by myself. Oh, also the reason I'm replacing the housing is because when I changed the filter I think I broke the third little plactic nub off the filter .. accidently. When I try to push the new filter into the housing, it appears to go in and the button clicks out, but the water is barly a trickle.. Ugh!

Your video helped me out! I couldn't remove the old filter cartridge. In my Whirlpool, the filter is mounted in the cool side. After taking apart everything I could, it was down to removing the filter assembly to get leverage without breaking something. The service manual said to "disconnect" the lines from the rear. This would have been a lot more work.Using your video, I was able to disconnect the lines AT THE FILTER ASSEMBLY and remove it in order to remove the old cartridge and reassemble to get it ready for re installation in the fridge.Thanks, Gary!

Great job on the clarity of your video. It does bug me that my housing is leaking from doing nothing other than replacing the filter. I can only guess that I pushed it in a little too firmly to get it to snap in. Users beware!

I wish I read the comments before attempting this. It’s impossible trying to get the water tubes to disconnect from the housing. I tried pushing the grey caps back to the housing but the cables wouldn’t loosen. Infuriating how little room you have to work with under the fridge.

I just did this repair on a Kenmore side by side. No doubt it depends on the model, but in my case I had to remove an additional bracket and disconnect a pair of wiring harness plugs. Still couldn't get the waterlines out of the housing, Finally cut them as closely as possible to the old housing, cleaned the ends as best I could, and inserted them into the new housing. It seems to have worked, but time will tell. I couldn't get the stubs out of the old housing even with it out of the fridge, pressing on the couplings and all.

My fridge has started squirting water when I have the filter removed. This makes filter changes messy and I assume the valve that should close when the filter is removed is broken? So this repair would solve my issue?

Yes, the water should shut off when you remove the filter. Replacing the filter housing should solve the problem. To find the correct part for your model, enter the model number in our website's search engine: www.repairclinic.com.

Impossible to remove inlet tube without first unscrewing water inlet clamp at rear of fridge to allow for slack. The use of pliers without unscrewing the rear water inlet clamp to allow for pulling the filter housing forward IS IMPOSSIBLE.

I just ordered a new filter housing through Amazon. I wanted to be sure I was buying it for the right reason, so I posted my current problem in their questions area. I got two responses, but they weren't very clear. Hoping someone here can answer my question a little better... I'm assuming I need a new housing for a 2 reasons: 1- the eject button no longer works, so I have to gently fight with getting the filter out, each time I go to replace the filter 2- It's hard to tell if the new filter is actually 'in place' when I go to insert it because I can't hear the locking click noise any more. Now, what these two people did happen to VAGUELY mention, is 'make sure there are no leaks when you go to replace it'. Okay, WTH do they mean by that? LOL! Did they mean to check & make sure there's not 'already' an existing leak when I get in there to replace it, or did they mean make sure the 2 existing water lines are attached to the new housing correctly/snugly as I'm replacing it, so it doesn't leak after I've installed it? Or, am I missing something completely? The word "LEAK" is not a favorite of mine and would like to understand clearly what this leak topic is referring to. Would be much appreciated if someone can help me out with both my questions. Thanks!

So, you're probably long done with this by now, but I'm experiencing 'leaking' from my filter housing... in that when I remove the filter I hear water spraying... I look into the filter with a flash light and where the inlet valve is, and connects to the filter is where it's leaking. This sounds to me like there is something broken/obstructing at least one part of that, considering without a filter water flows normally... and with it, it is greatly reduced the through-put. I would definitely say for the failing eject button, would be a good reason to replace the housing, since that is built into the housing. Same with it being hard to tell if the new filter in place, as there should be an obvious click as the spring sends the eject button back out to it's furthest position for the next eject.

How can I get the water lines out of the housing? Seems there must be a trick to it. Can't get them out.
@treybrad
@treybrad 6 жыл бұрын
This is a great video, but it doesn't do a very good job showing what he's doing with the pliers while pulling the water lines out of the housing. You need to press those 'collars' mounted to the housing into the housing, and that releases the grasp on the water lines. So, pull the water lines out with one hand, and use pliers to press those collars in (the opposite direction you're pulling the water lines. In the video the collars press left and pull the water lines out to the right) and it'll pop right off.

I might have similar model and could not find additional info. Ended up I removed from the rear vs having to remove door to get the 2nd panel off. Had to removed the Fan as well which was a bit of a PITA, but also gave an opportunity to clean the evaporator pan which can collect alot of crude.

Those water lines sure don't come out that easy! Had to cut one of them off. It did not want to let go. And there's not enough slack in the water lines to get in behind the filter housing.

Would this fix slow water flow? My water flow seems to be fine when the filter is removed, but is very slow when put back in. Would this fix that issue? I’ve already tried to replace the water inlet valve, and that does not seem to be the issue.

marco young I found that my water flow was fine when the filter was removed. I also found that if I pushed the filter all the way in, the water flow was normal. I’ve got it rigged with some zip ties to keep it tight, but it’s not a long term solutions. Some comments on amazon product reviews suggest that it’s possible the actual filter is slightly shorter now.

@miketype1each

Lydia Owens I just now performed this operation. You should be able to do it with your filter in place, but you must first remove the water inlet clamp at the rear of your fridge to allow for slack to pull the filter housing forward to access the water inlets at the filter housing. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to use pliers like the repairman did in this video without doing that.
