** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

My proud dad moment was recent when my 22 yr. old had friends over and they were drinking Captain & Cokes and bragging about how strong they were making them, while my son walked out to the campfire with Knob Creek 120 single barrel with one ice cube. His friends tried it and nearly choked. They all asked him how he could drink "that stuff." He kind of laughed and when he went in for his second glass, he grabbed my Laphroaig Quarter Cask, neat. Needless to say, his friends suddenly thought the bourbon was kind of tame. And they think my son is nuts. Funniest part is my son doesn't normally drink. He just wanted to show off.

Great video guys, I just got back from my trip to India. Have you tried any of the Paul John Single Cask's or Select Casks being the Classic (unpeated) or the Peated? Would be great to hear your thoughts on them as well. Indian Single Malts are really developing and growing but as you said Daniel the Angel Share is huge meaning little maturation time compared to Scotch Whisky. Cheers Fella's

As a Californian I think the same thing. But earthquakes are very rare around Austin, and when they happen they're small. The most recent one nearby happened 3 years ago, and it was a 2.9 magnitude. Very likely, few people even felt it.

I know what you mean. I live in Japan and we get a tremor every few months or so.They need to put some rails or lips or something on those shelves. Incidentally, I was curious so I looked it up: Austin lies directly on the Balcones faultline!......It hasn't erupted in 15 million years or so, and is considered one of the lowest risk fault lines in the United States. Looks like it's due if you ask me. YOU WERE WARNED, REX AND DANIEL!

Question for the Somm. I was recently at a distillery tour and they said that they had experienced something that I would like more knowledge on. After charring their barrels they had one that was extinguished quickly and they said that what came out had the more carmel and vanilla notes. But, the other had been extinguished slowly and contributed more smoke notes to the whiskey. Is this yet another variable that is used?
@FrostJarl
@FrostJarl 6 жыл бұрын
Seems like it would be a legitimate variable, the slowly extinguished one would have burned into the wood a little farther which could trap some of the smoke in it. Hopefully we can get a response from Daniel on this when they record the next set. Take the thumb up and hope it gets noticed.
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, in theory it's possible. Lightly charred / toasted wood will lead to less wood tannins. Heavily charred makes it more woody. If they changed nothing else about the inputs, that would definitely be the case.

This episode was like watching two kids with ADD trying to tell a story. Neither of you could stay on topic. Now sure that isn't unusual, but this episode was more chaotic. Going from whiskey in warm temperatures to the chocolate tasting to proposing a bbq tasting to tossing Daniel out a window to a dad story then back to chocolate with a dash of tea before finally getting on with the review all in 8 minutes 30 seconds, was fun to watch. I'm guessing the Ritalin kicked in around that time.

JasonWhiskyWise we have a limited number of the Paul John products here in coastal South Carolina so far my favorite is the Edited with about 5 drops of water. The peat is light enough it does not overpower the sweet nuttiness of the barley and wood notes. My go to is Compass Box Lost Blend which I still have 3 bottles of. I like Rock Oyster Sherry Cask and the 18 year old by Douglas Laing. I run a Whisky Club here in Pawleys Island we taste 6 times a year and 5 different Scotches and Whiskies a tasting. In April we are doing all America Night starting with East Coast Ryes to St. George Single Malt. June will be Scotches from each region of Scotland. It does make for an interesting hobby.

That's a bummer on the distribution of Paul John there but your Whisky Club is awesome as its a great way to share different whiskies with a group. Rock Oysters are great and my personal favourite is the Rock Oyster Cask Strength from Douglas Laing as their company have some great releases. I'm just starting out on my Rye adventure but Scotch's id say I'm seasoned with lol. I agree whisky is a great hobby and really fun to hear peoples opinions and tasting notes on the whiskies as everyone has a unique palate. Hope you have a great tasting!

This is a topic I haven't seen discussed. STRANGE WOODS FOR AGING WHISKEY! All I can ever find is people aging whiskey in oak, wether is white American or European. We all know oak is used, but why not others? Disregarding the size of the trees making for less of a yeld for barrel making, and off flavores some might impart, are all tree viable for aging whiskey, or are there some trees we need to stay the hell away from. Im currently aging (wooding) what would be a bourbon in several jars, with several different woods, at similar chars. Oak, hickey, cherry, maple,walnut, and mesquite. All seasoned, dried, chipped and charred (#3) WILL ONE OF THESE KILL ME? The walnut and mesquite smell like they would at this point. (5 weeks in) Im wanting to see what the basic flavor input for each wood is before trying my hand at making 1 Liter barrels out of my favorites and seeing what happens. Using a 60/30/30 blend of -All corn, rye and barley moonshines made localy.

Allen Warren Avoid red oak if possible because it is very high in tannins and you’ll regret wasting whiskey on the experiment. Walnut trees (black walnuts in particular) produce a natural compound called “juglone” that some researchers believes kills or retards other vegetation growing within the root zone of the Walnut tree. I’m not sure if there is enough in the wood of the tree trunk to cause any problems in humans, but who knows. Be very careful experimenting with different woods for aging. Some tropical hardwoods are very toxic and woodworkers have to wear special dust masks to keep from breathing the saw dust and becoming poisoned. Here is a useful link: www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/wood-allergies-and-toxicity/

im kind of surprised you didnt add water to the 101 and the fighting cock to go further indepth with the profile. All in all im glad youre back to whiskey. I personally am not on your level also more of a bourbon and moonshine guy. The whitetrash stuff if you will lol but just like cars a chevy caviler can be as just as much fun as a ferrari if you go balls to the wall lol "heres to fighting stealing and drinking" stay safe!

Indian Scotch..........hmmmmmm!!!!! I’m not sure if I’d try any of them just on a whim. I’ve had Indian beer (Kingfisher) and it was horrible. I became very ill after drinking it as a matter of fact. That one experience doesn’t mean Indian whiskies are bad, but I remain skeptical. If you guys like them, that’s more of an endorsement I can trust. Who knows, maybe someday.

Why did you had kingfisher beer? It's cheap shit and nobody really likes it here. Should have tried Bira.

so in my blind tests fighting cock beat six and twenty five grain and it beat Early times BiB in blind head to head, it it wasn't even close on the Early Times. It even beat Buffalo Trace! I can't believe this is a $17 bottle! And my son graduated from South Carolina (the gamecocks) so I bought him a bottle! Fighting Cock lost to Russell Reserve 10 year, but that is a $17 versus a $40, so not fair. 3 wins, 1 loss. Totally surprised.

Love you guys but that "proud dad moment" story seems in poor taste with the recent school shooting in florida.
