Whiskey flights are a great idea, I was day dreaming today that if ever I were to open a “Whiskey Bar” I would have different types of flight where you could pick your whiskeys. My whiskey list would have all titles highlighted in a price oriented colour scheme red, yellow, black (whatever colours you want). Red are the $10 and under whiskeys, yellow are the $10-20 range and black would be 20-30... (more colours would need to be added of course, this is just a rough example) and if a customer chooses a red flight, he can choose 3 of the red highlighted whiskeys, and same goes for the other colours.

For years, my 24 yr old daughter had been trying to get my husband to watch Game of Thrones but he stubbornly resisted. These GoT bottles came out, I bought them all and enjoyed them so talked a local restaurant/bar into holding a tasting featuring them. Now that I'm almost exclusively drinking whiskey I'm surprised: 1. Bars leave the pour spouts uncovered. 2. They don't know what a Glencairn is. 3. No knowledge of any whiskey's. But, that's why God(or Devil) created Magnificent Bastards, right?
@karl_alan5 жыл бұрын
Totally noticed the same. Very true .
@MayhemInMayberry5 жыл бұрын
Very true, and they almost never have a spirits menu and if they do it rarely has prices. Having to ask for prices, which they never know and have to look in the POS to find, super annoying, especially if they have a large selection.
@JMMurray2035 жыл бұрын
Some insight as to why: An incredible amount of oxidation/evaporation won't happen through a pour spout, an open bottle has air in it anyways. They also should also be putting caps on the pourers when closing up because fruit flies can get in, but most places probably don't. As for having glencairns, unless they are a whiskey/spirits-centric bar they'll probably never have them. Broken glasses are expected and factored into overhead costs, and glencairns are expensive. They'd have to raise prices to offset the cost. Ever been charged for a broken glass? Me neither. Theft is also an issue. The Irish pub I frequented often had their Guinness glasses swiped. Saw one lady grab two glasses from their table and two from the other empty table when she was leaving. When the special edition/anniversary glasses come out, they often put up signs saying you'll get money off of your bill if you return them to the bar. Glencairns would get swiped a lot. If I'm drinking at a whiskey bar I would expect they'd have appropriate glassware, just like at an Irish pub. But, run of the mill watering holes? Nah. A lot of the bartenders don't even know much about the beers they have on tap, I would much less expect them to know about whiskey flavor profiles when most of their day to day interaction with spirits is mixing up a cocktail from a recipe list. Beer and cocktails are much more popular. An old buddy was a long time bartender, chef, and is now a wine sommelier at a resort.
@JMMurray2035 жыл бұрын
@@MayhemInMayberry often the stock of spirits will shuffle. Things will drop off, others will pop on. Changing the spirits menu each time isn't cost effective. BUT, it is really annoying not having the prices there. Reasons why can include: They don't want you knowing the price and don't want people avoiding more expensive pours, so they essentially hope you order without asking. Another reason is the prices can fluctuate based on what price they are able to acquire the current bottles at, how fast the product is moving, or their current stock. If they are a chain restaurant, the prices can fluctuate vastly from location to location and they likely use the same menus within regions or across all their stores and printing prices for each location would greatly undermine the one-size-fits-all menu.
@karl_alan5 жыл бұрын
@@JMMurray203 thank you for the insights. I had not thought about the theft issue, but I also have been to many places that tried to advertise themselves as a "premium whiskey bar" or "one of the best whiskey establishments in town," but the employees/manager on shift hadn't heard of glencairns, nor did they know many of the whiskeys on tap. I get it when someone at Red Robin doesn't know what whiskeys they have, but I have been to a few places that advertise as whiskey locations, but the staff don't know anything about what they have. Just seems weird. In my town there is a lot of microbrew, and when you go into an alehouse, all the staff are actually expected to know the intricacies of all the beers on tap, so this type of thing catches me off guard.

I'm doing a dry week and damn it's hard! After hearing Rex explain the thing of intentionally staying away from the bottle and not just going a week without drinking because you're busy or doing other stuff, I decided to give it a try. And I don't even drink that much, only 3 or 4 scotches a week on a typical glencairn serving. But thinking "don't even think about it" is like when you're holding a big heavy box: you always get an itch on your back.

I absolutely agree with the flight fight to get it into bars. That's how I was introduced to Redbreast. got a $33 flight at a local Irish pub with Green spot, Yellow Spot and Redbreast. Also just last week I found that same wax bottle candy note in Glenmorangie original. Also do you know why there is a medicinal (iodine) note in some Scotches and just smokiness in others. If there is something I should be looking for I would love to know so I can get the smokiness without the band aide flavor.

If you want smokie high west, make sure to get the campfire. I haven't seen that in any bars though. Most bars (if they have high west) will have American prairie, which is delicious, but not smokie. Campfire is mixed with scotch, so it's got the heavenly smoke taste. Happy hunting!

Where I live, several restaurants, that have nice bars, have joined, or are trying to join, The B Line. The B line is a Northern Kentucky Based Bourbon Trail, that includes the smaller craft distilleries (New Riff, Boone County, Old Pogue), certain bars, and restaurants. The Bars are required to have 100 bourbons, the restaurants, 50. One restaurant I go to, has always had a great selection of whisky, and they are ramping up to 100 bourbons, to go with their roughly 15 Scotches, and 6 Irish). The other restaurant, is shooting for 50 bourbons, and have changed their menus to be very bourboncentric. Both offer flights, based on small batch and single barrel bourbon, or a flight of scotch. Not bad for a very small town.
