I recently visited a cocktail bar, and it had Oban 14. I happened to ask how much the "OH-bin" was. The barkeep: "You mean, the 'oh-BAHN'?" Yes, that one.

I love pairing this scotch with a cigar, usually a Rocky Patel vintage 1990. The morphability of Oban makes it the perfect cigar scotch. It's a whole cornucopia of flavor experiences waiting to happen and one of my favorite ways to try new cigars.

Had some Oban at the bar tonight. I was having drinks with some friends after work, so I really wasn't paying that much attention, but I really wanted to get home afterwards so I could watch the Oban episode...I didn't know for sure that you had one, but I was fairly confident. Anyways, I've found a few times now that I get smokey notes from whiskies when others get nothing. It was a relief to see that I may not be entirely crazy. It could be that I'm just really good at tasting smoke :-) BTW...In this episode, less than 5 months ago, you referenced hitting a milestone of 6,000 subscribers. Today is the day you hit 50,000!!! Congratulations, you Magnificent Bastards! Slainte mhath!

I usually drink bourbon, and this was the first scotch I tried. It blew my mind with how many levels of flavor it had rather than simply a front end and a back end. I am now on a scotch tour trying to find something comparable that's cheaper.

I'm really enjoying your videos! You've renewed my enthusiasm for whiskey exploration. I only started drinking about 5 months ago, and have mainly been doing research and drinking cocktails, but last week I finally had my first glass of whiskey neat and it wasn't completely terrible! Haha (I made sure that it was rye whiskey, so that the Grand Master Mooch wouldn't swoop in like an eagle and demand an offering) Right now I have three different whiskeys (two bourbons and one rye) that I'm sitting down and comparing. I'm also looking at the distiller's tasting notes while drinking to see which of their notes I pick up, if any. Anywho... I'm really digging your videos! Thank you for doing them! :)

I had Oban 14 for the first time tonight at a bar after 2 drink's of Glenlivet 12. I really enjoyed it. I may pick up a bottle. I am relatively new to the whisky seen. Reminded me of Highland park 12 and Canadian whisky lot no. 40. Lot 40 is my goto and have recently got into a bottle of the Highland park 12. The Oban just seams to be right inbetween the two.

Daniel All this talk of Islay scotch got too much for me one day and with no regard to warnings bought a bottle of Laphroaig Select at the supermarket to experience some diversity in whisky flavour profiles. I have come to learn that as far as Laphroaig goes its softer than the 10yo but man is it good (especially for those new to Islay). You can just dive into it and spend 40 minutes with a glass in a dark room getting to know it. Found smoke and peat initially but got through that and found buttery salted caramel sweetness with citrus/marmalade. Subtle isn't used to describe Laphroiag but I think this one is.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. That select is a wonderful bottle, and I used it regularly to introduce people gently to Laphroaig. If you can find the Lore, go after it. It's next. Maybe one of the best things they've done in my opinion.

Just love the salty notes, how do you think this gets in the whisky? I once heard that the sea-wind influences the barrels, and subsequently the whisky in it. I don't know if this is correct or some very fancy bullshit, but I am interested to know (mostly to show of to my friends).
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
there are so many 'x' factors, it's really hard to pick one. The water is going to matter, the peat is a huge influencer because of the type of material you're burning results in totally different smoke accents, etc. It's definitely real, but narrowing it down to one single influencer is almost impossible.

Two toasts in a row I feel special. All it took was a little light dad joke threatening. I just picked up a bottle of Talisker Storm and its amazing. You should do that one soon. My dad bought me a scratch and sniff whiskey book by Richard Betts after he found out I signed up for the level 1 sommelier class in sept. Most of the information in the book I already knew from watching you guys but the smells really helped. I was able to identify the iodine along with the peat in the Talisker Storm. For taste I get peat, brine and a bit of honey.
@charlieghague7 жыл бұрын
What's that scratch and sniff book like? I've seen it on Amazon before but never gave it a second look. If you want more good reading, check out Tasting Whiskey by Lew Bryson and the World Atlas of Whiskey by Dave Broom. Both are excellent, especially the former. That's so cool you're taking the class. I'm totally jealous!! Have fun and come back to teach us something!!
@QueenHibiscus7 жыл бұрын
Its made like a kids book with the thick pages and drawings. The information covered is fairly basic. Most of it I already knew just from watching this channel. However the smells were helpful in distinguishing the different individual smells in the main whiskey regions.
@charlieghague7 жыл бұрын
Jake&Rachel Interesting. Maybe I'll give it a try just for kicks. Daniel's "pretension in a box" actually looks cool too as a way of distinguishing smells.
@QueenHibiscus7 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking about getting that as well. Much more advanced than the book. However getting the book for $12 off amazon is a lot cheaper than the 85 pounds for the aroma kit.
@charlieghague7 жыл бұрын
Jake&Rachel Yea the aroma kit is pretty pricey. Especially if you get the 24 bottle one. Which, let's me honest, I'd spring for if I were gonna do it. No sense in half-measures. Seems like it really works tho.

Oban is great. It's widely available here which makes it nice because you don't have to look to hard to find it. I don't buy it often, but nonetheless it's a great "go-to" whiskey. As a bartender, I have also noticed that it's somewhat of a "gateway" single malt. People will usually get accustomed to it and then head on to the more ballsy islays.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
I've noticed the same thing about Oban and gateway. It's such a well rounded whisky.

I love me some Oban. When ppl come over for tasting I pour Monkey Shoulder, Oban 14, and Laphroaig 10. It really shines after the Monkey Shoulder and when we go backwards I def notice it become more light and fruity after Laphroaig. I get salt and seaweed notes as well. Especially the finish, I get a long, lingering salt taste on my tongue that I really enjoy. I love Little Bay too but haven't tried the distiller's editions or the 18. Wondering if you've had them and would recommend?

hello Rex and Daniel. I recently turned 21 in June, and I have to say whisky (specifically scotch) has probably been the most enjoyable alcoholic beverage for me so far. As a result I've been watching your channel fairly regularly to learn as much as I can and find new whiskies to try. I've tried a couple single malts, mostly speysides, and I recently purchased some Money shoulder after watching your video about it. I read somewhere online (so you know it has to be true) that monkey shoulder is a blend of Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie. I have no idea how true this is since I couldn't find anything about it on the monkey shoulder website, but I have tried Glenfiddich 12, I watched your video on the Balvenie double wood, but I haven't heard much on Kininvie and I was wondering if y'all would do a review on it.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
That's what I heard as well! I've only been able to try Kininvie once because most of it's whisky goes to blends. When they release a single malt, it's usually over $100. I'll see what we can find.

Now I know ya'll quite a few times now have said that once you go to Laphroaig it just kind of demolishes you tasting for awhile. My question though is comparing Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10 which of them is more of the one that will kick you while your down? My questioning on this is because I bought Ardbeg 10 I'm gonna say it was 2 weeks back but it may have been a full month even, but when I finally got around to having some it wasn't like someone tried to kick my teeth in or anything it was just kind of nice, medicinal and tar, but nice as I kept sipping on it. I had expected it to be far more aggressive than it was after having my neighbor tell me "Oh your still just getting into whisk(e)y if you want to try something harsh I'll bring you some Laphroaig or Lagavulin." and proceeding with that Ardbeg was to harsh for him.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think Ardbeg 10 is more heavy for lack of a better term. It's not that it's more aggressive. In my head I categorize Ardbeg as "heavy" and Laphroaig as "light" with lots of similar flavor components otherwise. sort of like the difference between white and red wine. It's a subtle thing. But they're both amazing.
@trinityzaku7 жыл бұрын
Hmm I am really curious to try Laphroaig then and see what I get out of it. Side note poured some Dewar's White Label I guess maybe an hour ago but I hadn't sipped on it for about 30 min because I am reading a book this same neighbor is letting me borrow. Out of nowhere and I mean this because it had been no joke at least 30 min there was cinnamon. I don't even know if it was a residual flavor or it was just a thought from the smell of it sitting next to me but on taking another sip sure enough I got cinnamon out of it. Not a hot cinnamon like big red or fireballs but like cinnamon roll.

@bestofdragoncon5 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard Daniel and other reviewers say that there was a minty note on the Lagavulin 16, but I never got that in any of my tastings. I just got a bottle of Oban 14 and I got slapped in the face with the attempt to cover up a cigarette with mint gum. The smoke is subtle and the mint is way more forward that any other whisky I’ve tried. I know taste is subjective, but all the Oban reviews didn’t say anything a minty tasting note. This was even more confusing because I was getting tropical fruits, flowers and honey on the nose. The taste was so far from the nose, it seems strange that they can exist in the same bottle. Good lord, I love the adventure of discovery that is Whiskey tasting.
@koinutachi5 жыл бұрын
It reminds me so much to those honey, savory notes that Old Pulteney brings to the table in the majority of its expressions. The brine is more prominent in Oban 14 though. I feel Oban 14 has been basically matured in ex-bourbon casks, I am a bit curious about how a sherry maturation would interact with this malt.
@williechiu37016 жыл бұрын

I don't quite get the "would have been like" part. Unless poor Kevin has no decent whisky bars in his world. I had a glass of Oban 14 just last weekend. The smoke was definitely there, but just a hint. Overall, much like a light Islay. This was after a gourmet mac & cheese topped with steak and accompanied by a dark beer.

To-day, being my 40th, I bought myself a bottle of Johnnie Walker Double Black (I actually don't need a excuse like a birthday to by whisky). Any who, I like this Double Black and was wondering if you Giuseppe could review the Johnnie Walk Blue as I just added it to my list of Whisk(e)ies to buy. Have a great day.

Well happy damn birthday! No more whisky excuses :-) I'll have to get us a Blue bottle. Once we do, we'll review it!

Have you guys been to Scotland, Ireland, or Kentucky? If yes, what distilleries did you visit? If no, what distilleries would you visit?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
I lived in Scotland for a short bit. Never got to see Ireland, and I've been all over Kentucky. But this was all prior to my whisky life. I plan on returning.

Do the Lismore, please guys. I just picked up a bottle. I'm new to trying to TASTE whiskey. AND I'm a texture water to begin with. I need to see if I'm tasting anything at all close to what's there

I had this on Wednesday. I could hardly taste any peat. Salt water....yes. Damn good Scotch though.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
yes. It's awesome. And mild as far as peat goes if you're used to Islay or Island whisky.

PRAISE THE WISK(E)Y GODS! I'm finally up to date with the episodes. ever since i started watching a few months ago every time i go to costco (every week) i end up in the wisky section, i usually never buy anything because im not much of a drinker until a few days ago when i decided it was time for my first bottle, so i proceed to spend 40 minutes of inner battle trying to decide wich bottle should i buy, on one hand i know im entry level and i should buy an easy one on the other hand there are bottles of Glenfiddick 12 there, and how awesome would it be ti say my first was a Glenfiddick, after 30 min i decided for the Glenfiddick as im approaching to take the bottle i notice another realy cool looking bottle, it attracted me, Cardhu 12, i know nothing about this bottle but that the bottle is cool and there is only one remaining so i do the obvious and take it. on my way home im happy with my purchase, maybe i don't know anything about this bottle but if i don't like it now maybe later i can come back to it, anyways it was a cool story...it wasn't meant to be, after mere 10 steps after i get out of my car i feel how the bottle slides off of the box and then, just like my heart, it broke... i have only the cork to remember that bottle. it would ease my heart if you could drink some because i know i will never find that bottle again .
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
Holy cow man. This is a heartbreaking story. I feel for you. Cardhu was the perfect gateway scotch for you. And you should be able to find it again. It's really well distributed.

@@WhiskeyVault The 12 or the 18? I have tried them both, and oh man do I love them dearly, since i live up in sweden in the north the 18 costs around 125 us dollar for me if you gonna recalculate
@burleymullins87767 жыл бұрын
It's true. Drinking whiskey, mead, and stout beer is required with a name like "Burley". I'm pretty sure it's legally binding.

I would hate for you to go back serious. I do think a suit coat a style day every now and then would be nice. You know whisky is about class. (It was hard to say that with a straight face - but one dressed up episode would be great).

a few weeks, a break up, a move, a job lost, and no time to watch whisk(e)y videos later... and all i have to show for it is a bottle of Shieldaig that for the life of me seems like it only has a half note of caramel before falling flat.... is there a such thing as a reverse reccomendation? because thats what i give Shieldaig.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
Damn, what a month you've had. Unfortunately, Shieldaig is a bit too pretty and simple for me as well. after a month like that, you need something that either soothes the savage beast, or picks a fight with you. Dalmore 12 or Ardbeg 10

Where is the best place to drink whisky in Austin?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
So many good ones! Blackheart, if you don't mind hipsters. Peche has whisky and amazing food. Roosevelt room is killer. Fado is awesome until they change locations. And headed way out of town towards Hamilton Pool is is a kickass bar called Proof and Cooper

Will definitely visit those bars during my upcoming trip to Austin. Thanks for the suggestions! Awesome channel btw!
