Awesome review! One of my all time favorite Single Malt is Old Pulteney 12 year old. Shopping at Liquor stores here in Vermont, and in neighboring New Hampshire I've only had access to the 12 year old and I imagine I would be a true fan of the 17 year old that you are reviewing. There's something great about Old Pulteney... My journey in whisky started in 2015 and I have purchased probably 80+ Single Malt products and yet Old Pulteney is one of my favorites out of everything I've been able to try. Other than the O.P. I am known as a Highland park HO! You guys are great! Cheers!

Nice to see this one getting some love! Old Pulteney 17 is my all time favorite scotch. I love that salt in the nose, and the way the sea air infuses itself into the scotch. Was lucky enough to visit the distillery, but was there during the bottling season, so I couldn't tour the distillery itself. They have a lovely visotor center, though, and the young lady working on the day we were there was super friendly. Sampled the 12, 17, 21, and Stroma, a liqueur they produce.

So I tried Laphraiog 10 yr last week, my first exposure to one of the more “challenging” whiskies. Most of my experience to this point has been bourbons, American whisky, and Jamison, so pretty tame stuff, in the grand scheme of things. I won’t say that I enjoyed the Laphraiog, but it was a tasting revelation, in that, up until now, most of my whisky tasting resulted in varying degrees of sweet alcohol burn, while I could really differentiate several notes in the scotch. Not only that, but the flavors stuck with me for the rest of the day, and other smells and tastes would take me back. Anyways, thanks for continuing to produce this fantastic channel. It makes me want to continue to experience new whiskies and expand my tasting palette even further.

Old Pulteney 17 was the first, to me, special bottle that I cracked open. I opened it the day my wife went to Ireland for her internship at an animation studio, and the day of my grandfather's funeral (last of his generation). I picked it up on a whim after hearing that the 17 and 21 had been discontinued. Got two of each with the first 21 standing open in my cabinet. Also, just finished dry week, thank you guys for a great idea.

Old Pulteney 17 is on the Northwestern coast of scotland. The barrel house is on the coast where the distiller contributes to the salt in the flavor. I believe that the 17 year is a well round scotch. Sweet, salty, with a nice extended finish. I get salted Carmel when sip the old Pulteney 17. I would say fore sure one of my top picks.

Hello, you magnificent bastards. I've been watching your brilliant content for a while and a few months ago I began my journey into the lands of Single Malt Scotch with a bottle of Talisker 10, a bottle which I enjoyed every glass of. More recently, I went to Spain on vacation where I had the chance to try Lagavulin and Bruichladdich and loved both of them - especially the Lagavulin. Having tasted two great whiskies and being met with affordable prices at the stores I decided it would be a prime opportunity to begin establishing a whisky bar of my own, and the bottles selected to do so were: Laphroaig 10, Highland Park 12, Glenlivet 12 First Fill and Clynelish 14. All in all, were these good first steps into the path of becoming a magnificent bastard myself? Thank you for the content, the laughs and the guidance in this brand new world of Scotch. PS: If you can't read my username due to KZbin reasons then Seamus Bowen will suffice.

This speaks best to the polarizing effect.....of the subjective nature of whisky tasting! There was no change in either expressed option, based on what the other person satiated! Sorry but if you say Old Pulteney 17 is under the radar, underestimate or unexpected, you are only showing your ignorance. Ever since Jim Murray named Old Pulteney 21 as whisky of the year 2012 Old Pultney 17 has been big and well known. It is almost identical to the 21; just has a little less finish than the longest and best finish in the world. Both whiskies were made identically and are bottled at the same strength. The casks used in the more recent bottlings aren’t quite as good as the earlier casks, but the 17 is still a very decent scotch.

Not quite sure where else to put this, but I thought you all might find it interesting. I was messing around with a massive database of reviews from Wine Enthusiast and getting respectable results at predicting wine varietal from a reviewer's written description of a wine (via the magic of machine learning). I looked around and found a similar database for whisky reviews, and decided to see if we could discriminate between single malts and blends based off the reviewer's description (and even a few other factors, like price and review score). My model was reaching ~85% accuracy, which is decent. But no matter what parameters I adjusted or how I processed the data, it wouldn't budge from 85%. I did some digging and it turns out 85% of my data is single malt... it just guessed single malt every time and was correct 85% of the time. What this actually means is that, based on the factors outlined above, there is no way to tell if a whisky is a blend or a single malt. You might expect words like "smooth" or "balanced" in the description to be a tip off, but hours of training could find not pattern there. Just another anecdote to bring up when people get a little snobbish about only drinking single malts, etc.
@alexk30885 жыл бұрын
Very interesting. I'm not a snob and I try blends but I don't always see the value in them. And some are maltier than others. I wonder if your algorithm could tell whisky from cognac from rum. It's possible for a reviewer to mention the same notes and yet be talking about completely different spirits. Experience and vocabulary of those reviewers varies wildly. I am having a hard time believing your near 100% results :-) Did you somehow remove the words "malt", "blend" and "grain" from the descriptions before running your logic? It's late, I'm just typing this to come back to it.
