When I went once whilst the Whitby Regatta was on the streets were packed. Over on the East side there are some great shops and walks not just on the Abbey but around it. Many little byways along the dock side of there as well lead to lots of Fishermens cottages. There is a famous pie shop somewhere along the East side and apparently even the toilets in there are grandly tiled. We have noticed a lot of cliff erosion since the 1970's but the character still remains.

You need a part 2 Neil. You missed some Whitby classic highlights. Maybe start at the top of the West Cliff to take in the famous whale bones. Traditionally a set of whale jaw bones were tied to the ship’s mast on their return to signify a successful catch with no crew fatalities. Down through the backstreets passing Botham’s Bakery to avoid doing the West Harbour again. Over the bridge and then left along the cobbled Church Street (pass the fascinatingly named ‘Arguments Yard’ which turns into Henrietta Street. The classic walk then takes you up the 199 steps (you have to count them!) and into the church yard that I mentioned to you earlier (on our visit on Sunday!). Try to avoid Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Then along to Whitby Abbey. At your walks tend to be continuous and not back tracking you will still have missed the Kipper Smoking hut along Henrietta Street with its amazing aromas. But as you’ve just climbed the 199 steps I recommend buying some as a reward for your climb! You’ve still missed both the piers! (Part 3?)

@@GimbalWalkTV, Neil, if on your Whitby full tour video at 23 minutes you’d carried on up the cliff side to the stone wall, that’s where we planted the daffodils on Sunday. Another little fact is that the abbey was bombed by German boats in WW1 before carrying on down the coast to bomb Scarborough where I believe 6 people were killed. The Grand Hotel was also hit. In WW2 Hitler forbade bombing The Grand Hotel as his plan was to use the hotel as his headquarters if he had invaded England. Looking forward to the Ripon video. We may even see you…

Plus I remember going with my girls at 6 in the morning to watch the fish being brought in. Those days of full fishing fleets and huge ships coming into the harbour. I believe it may have been Russian. Never been that close to such a huge ship and it made the harbour look small.
