Yes!! I literally just got these in the mail yesterday so I'm happy to see this here today. After researching online and playing with them the last 24 hours, a couple thoughts: being semi moist, it's really easy to pick up a lot of pigment goo but they thin out well so most of my 36 pans are actually pretty transparent; a post by an art distributor on LinkedIn explained that these are exactly the same as Yarka St. Petersburg, just packaged differently by different distributor; and one of the things that makes them artist grade is real pigments instead of hues so the couple commenters who mentioned buying for kids should consider that these have cadmium, etc, instead of the hues you'd find in a student line.

Update, i watched it again after using it for a year now. I never go from my paint right on to my paper, never ever,not even with my schmincke... I always dilute in the lid first,wich is probably why you think they are opaque, but i call them my inktense in a full pan of paint.. only a small bit with water mixed in the lid will go a long way with these,but you know me by now,I am a walking talking volunteer sponsor add for these, specially for beginners i think they are of great value.

Thanks SO much for this review. I was one of the many viewers who had requested it, and it was great getting your take on them. They look great. +Sarah Larsson (Rockcat) i bought the 24 set and it has been really groovie so far. I like it 'cause i can put other things inside the box for when i go plain aire. Its also relatively small ( slightly bigger than a cribbage board. (or a box of pastels)) and fits well in a back pack well but definitely not a pocket. Well i use anoraks so it does fit in mine, but normal people pockets... probably not haha. Personally, im happy that i got the 24 au lieu of the 12. the extra 12 colours you get are DOPE. Marty has a good point that you can mix most other colours from the 12 though.

Hi I know that I am late to comment on this but I was so surprised to see how widely available these now are. I'm a painter living and working in Brooklyn, but have family from Bulgaria. I traveled there in the early 90's and purchased a set with the help of a dear friend as art supplies were still somewhat controlled. These are wonderful paints! I'm so happy to be able to get them so easily. They are not a lower quality product. They may simply be a different standard, but it is an an extremely high one. I like that your reviews are balanced and that you actually give pricing information. Thanks

Owings Art Wow I wasn't expecting a reply 😀. I'm not surprised that you didn't find any supplies when you were there. The only reason why I was able to purchase anything was because I went with a government sanctioned artist. Art supplies could still only be purchased by someone who carried the appropriate documents in a government run store. It was a very strange and eye opening experience for me when I went. By the way I had a very good laugh at your video on the Stonehenge Aqua paper. I will have to give it a try.

White Nights were the first set of watercolors, other than the cheap cakes, I purchased. Considering the quality and price point one can't go wrong, in my not by no means an artist opinion. Although I've since purchased more expensive professional tube colors, required for class, I continue to enjoy using my set of White Nights. You're correct some colors seem to be a little grainy, but the graininess doesn't interfere with the color. Thank you for your honest review, confirming my feeling it was money well spent! I see Sathish Kumar has asked if you would review Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors. They are wonderful colors, in my humble opinion, and I enjoy adding them to artwork on handmade cards. I would be interested in hearing your opinion. They seem to be more opaque than my professional set, but the colors are beautiful.

Not bad eh? These were my "had to purchase myself a set when ordering my nephew the paints too because the price was too hard to turn down". I did get a few months ago a cool palette with some pretty neat watercolor paints is the mission mijello. 36 colors in 7ml tubes, one of which is a white titanium that says in the description that turns the paints into gouche. Obviously white watercolor paint isn't for everyone but I don't mind it if it's opaque and I think you don't mind it either. Anyways the palette was really the deciding factor when buying the set minus the fact that it's only $67.70 PRIME ON AMAZON. I have been pretty much a Daniel smith junkie and only try different brands for a specific color or reason; I really have enjoyed these paints and the surprising part is when after painting one day my husband and I were scorpion hunting with our pest control guy and the bright rose glows under the black light! Maybe that's why it's listed as fugitive. The color is awesome!

I also love Russian Green 😍 and chrome green oxide is one of my permanents also. So affordable from Jackson's! I'm backing up my chrome oxide green next order. when i use them i have to be careful to not pick up too much paint, even when the pans are dry! super awesome paint. If you are careful you can get a nice transparency. i was painting a naked lady, then decided to give her a see though blouse; it worked like a dream. These paints are VERY vibrant. If you paint a "realistic style" it might be a good idea to "muddy" the colours on the pallet a touch They are worth it for sure! Perfect for broke students comme moi that are looking for artist grade paints :)

Thanks for your review :) I have the 24 color box set and encountered one problem. The paints get tacky and the other day I tried to slide off the cardboard enclosure and it wouldn't budge as the paints had stuck to the inside. I had to rip the cardboard from the side and prize them off individually. I've since moved each full pan to little plastic tubs (which you can buy from soap supplies shops) Other than that the paints are really great. Lots of browns though. ^^;;

Funnily enough, I was going to ask if you planned on reviewing this set. I got 4 of these to finish up a restricted complimentary palette of 6 colours last year and I just love everything about them. I'm trying hard to resist getting a large set of them as I have at least 3 other sets of watercolours, but I definitely plan on getting more of the loose pans. As I'm rubbish at resisting temptation, I did get a set of Sonnet which are the high student grade by the same company. They also do Ladoga which seem to be the beginner/student grade as there's no pigment info. The Sonnet were only £12 including postage, so I thought I'd give them a try as I'm colour greedy. Out of the set of 24, 19 of them are single pigment. About 6 of them are only 1 lightfast rating, but over half are 3. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, but they are incredibly vibrant and release a lot of pigment with no effort at all. I use them for practising colour theory.

i understand that this set is the exception with it's full pans, but the fact that they could sell a 12 set with full pans, with good paint, and still make a profit (they wouldn't price it this low if they weren't making money from it), it sort of makes every other pocket set feel like a scam with their measly half pans, despite costing about the same as this set. it comes across like every other company are grossly overcharging for their pocket paint sets just because they can, while st petersburg are the only ones who price their paint fairly. either that is true, or the 12 set is a loss leader for st. petersburg, which i find unlikely.
@owingsart

That may only be half the story. These paints may not contain high grade pigments and I think it's a little sketchy that they don't publish the types of pigments they use.

I just got my 36 set and love them! Found out Blick is really charging for replacement pans and a few other colors. I will be looking around and likely order replacements from overseas or refill with M Graham or D.S. Will see when the time comes. I notice that some pans are fuller than others, and suspect that it is the more expensive pigments. Could just be normal part of their manufacturing process though,. I have heard that they are poured, not baked and cut into chunks, I guess. Nice review, Marty! I would never glaze over with that much water, haha, of course they gonna reactivate! Silly! Haha!

That thick consistency could definitely be nice for some drybrush effect when doing foliage. Quite interesting as a whole, they seem a little like something between gouache and watercolor at least from what I'm seeing. It's very cool knowing that manufacterers can be using the same pigments in their colors, but the way they handle it with the binder or a wetting agent, the specific "Formula" will really change appearance a nd handling. Making it a worthwhile venture to give lots of brands a try.I think when I've saved up abit more, I'm going to try out some winsor and newton, Daniel smith, and perhaps M.Graham! I wonder though, are there any Japanese watercolors besides Sakura Koi? I recently also saw the Mijello Mission gold set on The mind of watercolor, and he mentioned they were from South Korea. I'm increasingly becoming interested in Asian oriented watercolors. After all, ink and watercolor paintings are quite prominent in a lot of Asian cultures.

Hey Marty. Great demo! I don't know if these are considered "artist grade" or not but I think a lot of the "student grade" paints have really stepped it up and blurred that line for a lot of people. Many of them use cheaper pigments but the vibrancy and lightfast rating is still pretty spectacular. Do you find now that you have been doing this for a while that your creative habits have changed? I remember you saying in past videos that you were primarily an oil painter. Is that still true or do you find reviewing all these products that you've found any new interests and maybe lean towards something else like watercolor, pen and wash, etc? Also, If you don't mind adding to your list, I would like to see you review Mission Gold Watercolors? Their website is giving away free samples (a cerulean blue which is a light phthalo blue, and a permenent red which is a napthol red). They are newer but there is a lot of controversy on their quality. I've done some research and found that if you look at their single pigments then they seem pretty much on par with other companies, they just tend to use multiple pigments for their earth colors and someone said they use a lot of Benzimidazolone pigments which they claim are more like staining dyes that are mixed in to make them seem brighter. I don't know that much about pigments yet so I can't tell if they are being over critical or not. Either way, some people don't like them, but I guess that's true of everything. Thanks Marty. -Pete

+IllustrationsByPete Hi Pete - Thanks for the great questions and for sharing this info on Missions. I'm planning to order them soon and they are on my list for sure. To your question about changing interests. Here is my process, which allows me to use lots of media - I draw and work thumbnails with graphite, washes, inks. Then I'll do a watercolor painting study, maybe several times over and over. I'll also do lot's of subject sketches. Once I'm satisfied with the general composition and colors, I'll start the underpainting and drawing process for an oil painting. Then I'll do the oil painting. So I end up using a variety of paints, pencils, charcoals, oils, oil mediums like linseed or walnut oil and lots of other materials. That said, I don't know about you, but I just like trying new things and keeping an open mind about the old ones. That's basically it. :-) - Marty

+Owings Art Thanks for sharing your process. That sounds like a great way to keep it interesting. If there was anyway to get that process or at least clips of that process into a video or series of videos showing the beginning sketches to end oil painting, it would be great. I always enjoy watching people do what they do, it gives me a glimpse into what makes them tick. Thanks again. -Pete

+Owings Art Hey Marty, shoot me an email before going into your Gansai paints review. There's some info I can give you to include with information that is not readily out there and due to this, there are a lot of misconceptions regarding the product. As you know, I'm like you where we are interested in the history and interesting tidbits. One such info bit is that Kuratake is the brand, the type of paint is called Gansai, Kuratake Gansai Tambi is what the company decided to call it. Cheers! I've missed your videos (I've been a bit distracted with my art) and I'm glad that when I want, I can go to KZbin and watch new videos on your page. :-P

I have two 24 sets of these watercolors....and I only use them for “casual” painting. There is something about them I just don’t like, they don’t feel like artist grade to me. They are too opaque for my taste, and some of the colors dry chalky. I use them for journaling, making greeting cards, mixed media pieces....but when it comes to more serious painting, this brand just doesn’t work for me.

Hi Natalie - Both are quite good but I have to give the edge to W&N Artists watercolors. The White Nights may not be as transparent as you'd like a watercolor to be. They can be a little chalky when applied heavy. You just have to water them down a bit. Good luck and thanks for the question! ~Marty

+BIOnerd93 I have used Cotman paints for years, and I would not recommend them. I finally switched to White Nights, and plan to eventually add Daniel Smith and Schmincke to my collection as and when I need to. The reason for abandoning Cotman is that, firstly, they dont stay moist in the palette, so you're always having to fight them to get them to reactivate. Secondly, they dry up fairly quickly in the tube - Ive had to throw quite a few nearly full tubes away. This didnt used to be the case before, I had them for years and they were fine. But recently this started happening, so Im not sure if maybe they changed their formulation or what. Having said that, their pans are better than their tubes, and do last for ages. So the pans are a good, economical choice if you cant afford artist quality. But then, White Nights is artist quality, and I believe are in the same price range as Cotman's (if not cheaper!) so you might want to try those.
