Air bubbles sometimes present as White Knights pans are filled by liquid pouring in the same way as Sennelier paints are. The paints in the pans are exactly the same as paint in the tubes which is why they rewet excellently. Most other manufactures make the pan paint to a different (stiffer) recipe from their tube paints, these are then formed by machine into long strips which are then cut into pan sizes and inserted into pans. White Knights are fantastic paints.

I find these are great paints and great value, artists quality watercolour s at a low price .. I bought the 36 pan set for around 75 euros including shipping I find these are perfect for beginners who want to try watercolour without spending too much money .. I prefer these paints too Windsor & Newton artist paints although I usually use Rembrandt & schminke .. I've heard other artists saying these paints were kind of gritty/sandy I didn't have that problem in the 36pan set .. although I did find a few little air holes in the paint pans but it wasn't a problem .. I liked your review keep up the good work!!!

Excellent review. I totally agree with what you say about the paints "competing with each other" when mixing, that's the impression they give. Thank you for the tip about what you do with the black paint, that is wonderful advice that I will definitely use. I did too, experience the air bubbles that you mention on my madder lake red light, which is one of my favorite colors. Thank you very much for the thorough review, it has been very interesting to know your thoughts and experiences with this paint!

Thank you for the very helpful review. I ordered some individual pans from the UK site, rather than have colours chosen for me via the set. Very impressed so far. I love the green, the Indian gold and the cerulean so far but tbh they are all lovely. The ones I chose were all single pigments bar the yellow ochre. Will probably build a travel set using Hannemuhle postcard tin I have knocking about. Really, really good value. 👍🏻

You did a good job with this. Sometimes when an artist is doing a review they go quite overboard with the brands they started out with or prefer because the new paints they are trying always are compared to their favorites and aren't necessarily judged on their own merit, and a lot of the reasons why the colors come out lacking in some way is somewhat subjective; plus, half the time they compare it to a brand I can't afford. I like when artists talk about the pallet they're reviewing and the difficulties or plusses with the paints themselves...but not necessarily wholly in comparison to another brand while in the process. When you talk about the particulars of the paints themselves, I try to get an idea of if I would like that characteristic.

I believe I read, that their pouring process and the honey might account for some air,. I just got the 36, set, and do not see myself needing any better quality of watercolors as a hobbyist.I find that 2 of my colors have a strange, jelly like consistency, and are a bit weak in pigment, but 2 out of 36 isnt bad. Yes I agree they are very different, but I enjoy them. The Russian Green is one of my favorites, and I will always re-order!

+Maria Kellner Thank you Maria for sharing this useful info with us, you contribution here on youtube is very much appreciated, I have learnt lots from your comments, I had suspected the yellow ochre had another yellow in the mix, I originally thought Naples yellow-ish, but now I know, I can add a cool yellow to W&N yellow ochre and get the same mix, understanding the colour numbers is a much better way of looking at the pigments than relying on colour names, Maria you are such an asset to the art community, thanks for kindly sharing your knowledge with us. everyone please take a look at Maria's watercolour website, her paintings are incredible, she has invented a new product called colour previewers, check them out at www.marylkaart.com

+Maria Kellner That explains why I find the White Nights yellow ochre so nice for skies, I didn't like it at first, I thought it was under pigmented compared to W&N but the addition of transparent yellow has gave it a lovely transparent glow, I bet if I mixed it with my usual foliage green mix(hookers green+yellow ochre) it would look great, more transparent for pencil and wash, these colours have really opened up a new way of thinking about the way I mix colour:)

At last a real Artist who knows what they are talking about, in a detail and relevant manner as oppose some hyper air head who has not thought about what they are going to say and rambles on about them selves. After a year of extensive painting, running out of my DS and W&N paints and can't afford to replace them, so have recently purchased the 24 set and your video was most illuminating and helpful. You mention you would be happy to use them with your W&N paints, would really appreciate a video of this quality on recommended mixes especially to improve the granulation effect of White Nights.
@smoothie77drawingpainting6 жыл бұрын
I don't know about "real artist" but thanks Dave its much appreciated, the white nights work nicely with W&N, Cotman, and other brands I've tried, the thing is (as mentioned in the video) some colours can be very hard to mix due to the high pigment load of white nights, they can easily over power other colours, so mixing can take some getting used to, I haven't noticed any adverse effects with granulation, although some of the earth pigment are quite granulating, granulation isn't something i try for in my work,so couldn't really advise on that .

that's what you call "mucking about " the last painting is gorgeous. I'd give my eye teeth to be able to paint like that . its simply beautiful . thanks for the review. are the "cadmium" colors are they only dangerous when wet and or dry as well ? how dangerous are they?
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words:) I don't think it matters if the cadmiums are wet or dry, just try to avoid getting it on your hands and touching your mouth, once cadmium enters the body through ingestion or absorption is when it can become harmful, so if you do get some on your hands just wipe it off before it has time to soak in, I think you have to become exposed to a lot of it before any problems arise,

Hi Smoothie, great review, very detailed. I am pleased that on the whole you are as satisfied with these watercolours as I am. As I don't own W&N full pans I had no idea that they were marginally smaller in size, I only have the W&N half pans and they are bigger than those! The black by the way is great when you are painting the universe, if you are doing a galaxy for instance where you really want it black out there! I recently did a painting of the Star Trek Enterprise and I needed a black sky behind it and I didn't want to use black paper, worked a treat. I have the 36 whole pan set and I have found that the violet in that set is also a very strong colour and stains a lot too, but it is not really a colour I would use on its own I would prefer to mix it myself from other colours. The palette with the 36 set has an additional fold out mixing palette which is very useful. In the studio I tend to use a porcelain palette so staining is not an issue for me. I truly love these watercolours and I get on with them very well. I particularly like how easily the paint picks up from the pan and how easily they mix. Like you I agree that they are certainly unbeatable for price and allow everyone to experience artist quality without breaking the bank to do it. Thanks for the review, it was worth the wait mate.
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
+Tony Green Hi Tony, thanks for commenting, I have been looking at the 36 set, the large palette area is a big plus for me, I think that's the one I will eventually get, normally I use a limited 12 colour palette, but I'm so delighted with these paints I want to try more of their vibrant colours, the sad thing is...I saw white Nights watercolours for sale on line several years ago, I thought that because they were so inexpensive they were probably rubbish, BIG mistake! I'm so glad I recently took the plunge and bought a set. Thanks for the suggestion for an additional use for the black paint, its good to hear it has more uses than just staining palettes :)
@mariakellner22218 жыл бұрын
+smoothie77 The black because it's a mix of staining colours It can get to a very transparent dark dark with less layers ,staining colors blocks the light of the paper ,tube blacks don't do this,they can look chalky.
@mariakellner22218 жыл бұрын
+smoothie77 Another idea that may be useful if you want to section off your palette I have used blue tack to make channels to section it or stop pigment from overflowing in an area. A few years ago I bought a book of all available pigments ,it's been my paint bible book, I can read up all the different characteristics of each pigment,that happened because every workshop I attended every artist had their own list of colors ,a long story short I found I had the colours by the pigment number and along the way I memorized most of pigments.
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
+Maria Kellner I have to say the black is slowly winning me over, I was experimenting with colour mixes and found this black a very good mixer with other colours, and as you mention, the transparency of the pigment makes it good for glazing if tinted with another transparent pigment, umm..maybe more useful than I thought.
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
+Maria Kellner Oh yeah, blue tack, that's a great idea! thanks for another great tip Maria, its much appreciated, I had a look at the pigment numbers on the W&N site, I wanted to see what (Russian) green PG8, and red ochre PR102 were, couldn't find the same numbers, I found almost the same, but just 1 digit difference, have you any info on these pigment numbers? your way of memorizing all those numbers is brilliant, it must of took ages to do that, thanks Maria.

I have two of the “sequel” sets, whatever that means, 24 pans each. I don’t use them that often, but find the colors are more vibrant and/or opaque than my other watercolors. True that they are different…If I really, really water them down, they are ok, but I think that some of the colors get a little dull when they dry. I also had an issue with one of my sets, some of the wrapping that each pan comes in got stuck in the pigment, maybe they were wrapped when the pigment was still too wet? This resulted in a few of the pans still having bits of the foiled paper stuck in them. I am still able to use them, but it’s annoying.

Nice paintings. I have the 36 palette and that one has the extra mixing tray at the bottom similar to the large Cotman palette set. White Nights and Mission Gold were the only affordable one for me to get into better quality paints. They are very vivid and very easy to use with each paint having its own characteristic and easily rewetted. They do stain the palette though. I hear that an eraser takes the stains off.

Hey, you are reading my mind. I do have a quite expensive water color by the brand Schmincke. I nearly never use it because I am beginner in water color. So, yes tit should be a better idea to buy cheap one and just start a couple of small paintings.. Ones I bought really cheap acrylic paint in a discounter. The third painting I created with them was on a Pizza box and I still love it!
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
A Pizza box! :) that's great, I love to here stories like that, it just goes to prove we don't need to spend a fortune to have fun and create art, I hope you ate the Pizza first! or that would be a waste :). If you are looking for good quality watercolour to start with, then I do highly recommend White nights. A couple of weeks ago I bought a replacement Winsor & Newton palette box on ebay to replace my old one, it was nearly new and I assumed the 12 pans of paint were the original Winsor & Newton paints... to my pleasant surprise the bottom of the pans were embossed with the Schmincke brand name, so I contacted the seller, he confirmed they were Schmincke Horadam artist watercolour, I never used them before and i'm really looking forward to trying them... but not on a Pizza box haha :)

Thats funny, right?! It was my art teacher (just a normal art school for hobby artists), he stored big boxes he coul cut into smaller pieces and cardboards in his atelier and gave them to knew students. I just wanted to try acrylic painting so I had no canvas. And I didn´t feel any pressure because I had nothing to loose... And actually I prefered it much more than painting on canvas, it was far too grainy and with 10 Euro each canvas far too expensive for me! If I could post my frog drawing I would, but I think its not possible on KZbin. I will try it on google plus!

That's so true, as soon as we are not worried about the cost of the materials we tend to be free and uninhibited and it shows in our work, some of my favourite pictures are done using very cheap materials, I would love to see your frog drawing, it should be possible on G+.

I see the Black listed as "Neutral Black" (PB15:1, PBk7, PR187) - Could that be like Neutral tint? - It's not a standard Carbon based Ivory or Lamp Black. My Sennelier Paynes Grey leaves a similar stain, Must be the Phthalo pigment in it. The only Lightfast issue I know of is unfortunately that lovely Russian Green or in some sets it's just called Green. It uses PG8 (nitroso iron complex) according to Handprint.com and is rated at only marginally lightfast but it is a lovely colour.

Hi D cat, thanks for the question, I discard the dirty water in the sink and rinse it through, If you're getting lots of paint on your hands particularly cadmium's and cobalt's it might be wise to wear gloves, a lot of artist don't bother and are just careful not to get paint on their skin, or wash your hands when you have finished painting.

Cadmium is one of the most poisonous metals known...especially important to wear a mask if doing splatter !

thank you so much for this video I have been waiting to buy the white nights paints for ages and am watching every single review as this is the first good watercolour set I will get I used like 1 pound watercolours before. also buying the Russian watercolours without the box is so much cheaper

+sara rahman Thanks Sara, I'm sure you will be delighted with White Nights if you've been using £1 watercolours previously, thanks for the comment.

I'd say that the white nights full pans are smaller because the are made in Europe

From what I understood Yarka and White Knights are from the same bigger company somehow but not the same colors. And Sonnet are the student grade.

Hi Smoothie, I just found your channel and I am really impressed by your talent. This review was really helpful! I received my set 2 days ago and Icould not wait to try it. I found that the plastic box is not too good, so I will buy a metal box for my paints. Have you purchased a new box as well? If yes, which one? :)
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol, Thanks for the nice comment, I haven't bought a new box for the paints, what I tend to do is use them with a plastic tray for more mixing area or I sometimes use them along side my old Winsor and Newton 12 whole pan box, if I do buy a new box, I think I would go for the light weight metal box that can be bought empty from most art shops, Jackson's sell there own branded version of these at a reasonable price...might be worth checking out:)

It's mostly the plastic that sits just a bit over the sides of the pans that is irritating me. I thought about purchasing a simple metal box for watercolour pans. I am used to Schmincke and this is probably why I am finding it hard to adjust to this plastic box. :) I live in Denmark so ordering from Jackson's turns out to be quite pricey due to EU-shipping costs, but there are a couple of nice art shops here in Copenhagen, so I will see if they have any empty boxes. I did a colour chart yesterday on cold press paper and I am really pleased with these watercolour paints.

I'm sure you will find something suitable if you shop around... Just a thought... maybe Ebay or Amazon might be worth checking too? Its a shame White nights don't supply a decent box with the 12 pan set, the larger sets seem to come with a much nicer box, but we can't moan about the paints, they are superb and very under priced in my opinion, I hope White nights don't read this comment or they will start putting their prices up lol :)

smoothie77 Hey Smoothie. I ended up buying a metal palette for my colours, but as I expanded my colour selection, I found myself lacking space. I have now purchased the st. Petersburg White Nights palette that has space for 36 pans. It is much nicer than the plastic one with the 12 colours. :)

Why not take the paints out of that tray and stick them directly to the bottom. I've used kneaded erasers for that before and it works fine. Also this vid had fantastic information thank you so much. That was so thorough.

Hello again smoothie.......good review of white nights.. As I mentioned to you a few weeks ago, that all of my work is done with White Nights and once you get used to their strengths, then they can compete with the best. You asked me to put some of my work out there, so that you could compare the colours...well it's on it's way soon, I will let you know when.... I find that with the pencil and wash technique, Cad Yell...Cob Blue..and plain Green work well, ( various mixes ) and Yellow Ochre and deep Orange with a touch of Raw or Burnt Sienna work great for autumn colour. The Yellow Ochre is really strong.......in any case, dont you find that it's all subjective?...... Bobby
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
+Bobby Harper Hi Bobby, thanks for writing in again, I'm really enjoying the White Nights paints, glad I bought them! the mixes you suggest sound good, I will give them a try, I prefer the White Night yellow ochre over W&N although I did find it less pigmented than W&N but as mentioned in the review it has a nicer yellow glow, I found out from Maria Kellner that White Night yellow ochre has transparent yellow pigment mixed in, I think thats why I like it (smooth and less opaque), W&N is good but more opaque and chalky, but as you say, its all subjective. I'm looking forward to seeing your work, thanks :)

+Etzli Tenoch Thanks for letting me know, a few people have said similar, I guess whites nights are not as light fast as they claim, thanks again for the comment.
@bobcat10978 жыл бұрын

White Night paints are not lightfast enough. I went through their whole range, only half are rated high light fastness, all the rest medium or low.
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
+Weiran Yang I don't know which website you looked at ?, on the English St Petersburg site it has 41 colours with 3 stars, 7 with 2 stars, and 9 with 1 star, that's a very good lightfast rating.
@Sylvia2yang8 жыл бұрын
+smoothie77 it's the Ken Bromley website where I ordered mine. I like these colours so ended up hand picked all the high rating ones.
@katpaints8 жыл бұрын
+smoothie77 I looked up the pigment numbers they list on their web site for a couple that they rated 3 stars and my favorite pigment site - Handprint - said it was marginally lightfast at best. You have to do your own homework when it comes to paint.
@Sylvia2yang8 жыл бұрын
+Kathleen Roush I quote handprint "new shades use pigments that either I or the ASTM has found to be marginally lightfast - use with caution" "Overall, the coloristics of these paints do not compare even to the best "student" grade paint lines, and the pleasingly bright colors will fade rather quickly." To me it means they are not lightfast.
@katpaints8 жыл бұрын
I agree. I know a lot of people who use White Knight without problems but they mostly use sketchbooks, closed and dark most of the time. I know that there are way too many paints that are not stable. there are some that I adore like Rose Madder Genuine that I have to leave it the Bad Paint drawer. My favorites are Daniel Smith although I use a lot of W&N artist grade. I don't like Cotman - too much filler!
