From what I can see from the Census records, those people chose to stay and work for him. If my family had gone back to Germany, GB, or Denmark/Sweden/Finland, or South America, what would their life be today (what would the slave's life be like today considering they were already slaves on another continent)? Slavery is not about skin colour or racism, it's mainly about money and greed. I have been told that in the years 1500s, one third of the inhabitants of Lisbon (Portugal) had African blood in their veins, because wealthy slave dealers were mostly Africans or Arabs , Europeans at the time never dare enter the Africa forests or savannahs . By the way, "slave" means "free" or "brave" like in "Slava Ukraina" : the slavic tribes were always fighting each other, making them easy preys , hence the name for an unwilling servant ; African Black slaves were then an exotic and expensive "item", only available for rich people. It's strange to see African people turning toward Islam, when you know that Arabs were the biggest slave dealers, but they did not buy slaves, they took Africans as prisoners and the Coran says you can use a war prisoner as your slave. Europeans made money in "triangular trade" : they came in African ports to buy or exchange slaves , send them to colonies against exotic goods and spices, and made their fortune by selling these goods back in Europe . Buying and selling African slaves by itself was not worth the investment. The thing is that these traders kept books that still exist in Bordeaux (France) and other european countries, but the Arab and African dealers left no trace of their business.

Also many slaves were shipped to South America. There is a large history of Hispanic slaveowners of African slaves and yet almost none of that is talked about today. If white people are guilty by ancestral blood than so are Hispanics and it doesn't matter which Hispanics just like it doesn't matter which white people. If we are going just by skin color as we seem to do, than brown skin is guilty of holding African slaves as well, but somehow they've managed to squeeze themselves in under America's victimhood banner. It's all such a spit in the face to MLK who famously said to judge a man by the content of their character and not by their skin color. We do the exact opposite yet celebrate the words of MLK. Irony is a hell of a thing. Another thing which was slightly touched on was African Arab slaveholders. During the Barbary Slave Treaty something like 2-3 million white Europeans where enslaved by African Arabs otherwise known in the 21st century as...black people since we are dumbing everything down to just skin color. So the question is....where is all white contempt against black people for their ancestors possibly being enslaved by someone in their ancestral tree? How about we just don't play this game of blame and base people on who they are today in this moment instead of one of their ancestors who may or may not have had anything to do with slavery. People forget...slavery was a rich man's game in America. It wasn't poor or middle class white people who owned slaves. It was the rich people whom owned plantations.

a few of the slave owners learned that the better the conditions and environment (including relations with each other) they provided, the better the crops they could yield. Examples introducing shifts in labor (usually 6-8 workday), married slaves having private living quarters for themselves and children. Children of slaves not having to work till a certain age latter teens (which at this point in history was considered around the age of adulthood), offering slaves and their children education (the wives of the plantation owner were the ones who did this even when it was considered illegal) The better the relationship between slaves and owners the better the results in production. Most/many of laws made forcing the return of slaves to their owners were made not to prevent them from escaping the south, but prevent them from escaping to work at neighboring plantations who did provide better conditions. The plantations that did provide the good conditions, nobody was running away. On top of that they never had to purchase additional slaves. Lifespan of slaves in Caribbean and south America was just a few years after arriving (which is why they received 85% of African slaves) while by the end of slavery in north America , was about the same as whites.

Enslaved men (and women) were made to sit chained in that place for days and sometimes weeks before being loaded on to ships. There's a room called the "cell" for those who fought back. I didn't see it in a movie or read it in a book. I saw it with my own eyes. That castle was owned by different European countries who all made a lot of wealth before chattel slavery was abolished.

As a European, it's interesting to watch Americans react to stuff like this.. Their school system failed them. They should know this. I'm not blaming the kids, they just know what they've been told by relatives, friends and misinformed teachers. Sometimes it feels like America is just living in it's own little bubble, making shit up as they go and feeding it to their people, well, just like she said, while the rest of the world is rooted in facts.. You should all be very very scared, both for yourselves and your children. They have already altered your view of history, the world, and the people in it. If you ever get the option, try going to a school in Europe for a year or something. I think Finland or Iceland has the #1 world ranking in best school systems, teachers, and students. They rank very high with their scores and actually teach facts. Stuff with proof. I don't wanna start a EU v USA war in the comments, just.. you have to admit your schools kinda suck. You guys have to walk through a frickin' METAL DETECTOR, that's insane! I used to bring my knife with me to school all the time, and during recess me and my friends would go into the woods and chop stuff up and try and whittle cool stuff out of it.. Like if I brought a knife to school in USA, they'd probably take it and I wouldn't get it back until after school or some stupid shit like that.

Slavery still exists today in Africa, like she says. There are different groups of people who can't stand each other (e.g. the Hutu-Tutsi genocide), and that has been the case for thousands of years in ancient civilizations; people who were captured after battles were kept as slaves by the victors, black and white people alike. In Rome, for instance, they had slaves from all the countries they had conquered, and they weren't treated badly, they were simply servants in the households. Many were also freed after their owner died, and among those freed, many chose to remain with the families they served if they could afford to pay them. The black slaves that were brought to America in the 1700s - 1800s also weren't captured by white people, but bought from the black tribes who would capture and sell them for a huge profit. In metropolitan (European) France, there have never been any black slaves, but they have brought some to the overseas colonies and territories that are still French today, like in the Caribean. But many cities with harbors on the western coast of France have made a lot of money by transporting slaves from Africa to America, before it was banned first in 1794, but the loophole existed that they were allowed to transport. This was then taken care of definitely in 1848, when it was made illegal for any French person, even in a foreign country, from owning, buying or selling slaves, and from participating, either directly or indirectly, in any trafficking or exploitation of this kind. In the USA, there have also been indentured servants, often Irish, who were "owned" by other people for periods of time, e.g. 20 years, during which they had to work without pay.

Because it means he is willing to look into it and even if he doesn't like the answer that he finds he will be able to make an educated decision. It's very rare today that you find someone who doesn't just take something at face value no matter how credible the source in Kingston is a very credible source she's really all about the truth but it never hurts to double-check or just verify for yourself what somebody says. So good on you sir for being willing to look into it and being open-minded enough to find out for yourself. When I was looking into this I never knew that there were thousands of commercial slave owners that were black and also fought for the Confederate states.

The truth is slavery was not about colour... it was about money and power. Racism was not the cause of slavery, it was a biproduct that came after. (My guess, if you were a white slaveholder it would be a lot easier if you convinced yourself that the slaves were somehow less, and racism was born). I think it's time to stop being African American, or Italian American, or Irish American... how about being an American who is black, or an American who is Italian... it seems small but it's a big change in how you think of your place in the country that you, and generations of your family, were born in.
@burgerburgerbali46197 ай бұрын
yes agreed it is about money and power not about race. African warlordss and nobility enslaved another african, the white european enslaved another white european like the slavs and irish it is about power and monetary gain. the racism came as byproduct on feeling them sself better than the enslaved ppl.

African American, Italian American, Irish American, etc… all ways to celebrate one’s heritage and history while being American. The description does not make anyone less proud to be an American. The best part of America is pluralism. But you know… people that spell color with a “u” likely don’t have American as any descriptor.

True... I'm Canadian. We have a huge multicultural country. We celebrate our lineage and the culture of our ancestors. We have amazing festivals like Greek Week, and Chinese New Years etc. where they'll shut down parts of the city so people can celebrate together. We have cultural community centers .. but if you ask someone where there from... they will say Canada... Even if they don't speak English, if you ask them they will say they are Canadian but their family came from (where ever). Sometimes someone looking in from the outside can see things you don't see if you are in the middle of it. Just a thought.
@hatleyhoward71937 ай бұрын
@@sharis9095It’s just a label that allows people to self identify. It’s cool if other countries don’t follow in suit. But it’s really just an identifier as a means to be proud of heritage while also being an American. For myself personally, I am a Texan first and foremost. And also an American. It’s okay to be multiple things as they aren’t mutually exclusive.
@cynthiacook16463 ай бұрын
So much truth and honesty in your comments in the video. The sad thing is that far more people prefer the lies and distortions instead of doing honest, factual research. From the beginning of this country, there were always free blacks. As a matter of factual history, the first blacks were not slaves but indentured servants. The first slave law was passed in Massachusetts in 1648 and the first southern law was passed in Virginia in 1661. The first law abolishing it was passed by Vermont in 1777 with all other colony/states passing laws to mitigate it and all due to the Declaration of Independance. Slowly, the minds of northern troops changed about fighting against slavery, the many letters, diaries, etc. showed the change of heart and mind on that subject. One thing I am curious about is how many blacks today would feel if they found out they were descended from black slave owners such as Nat Butler, William Ellison, Dilsey Pope, Pendarvis Family, Holmain and Collins families, Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, Marie Therese Metoyer, Antoine Dubuclet, Andrew Dunford, John Carruthers Stanly and Anthony Johnson.

I like Candace, but this is way too simplistic. Yes, white people did not invent slavery. Slavery was ubiquitous throughout the globe. Many writings from different cultures justified it. However, several things: 1) chattel slavery WAS first practised by the West in the transatlantic slave trade. 2) white people did not end slavery b/c of a moral epiphany The Industrial Revolution did. It was much cheaper and much more efficient to replace manpower with machinery. 3) the abolishing of slavery took place among other cultures well before the West. 4)the civil war was not solely due to wanting to end slavery. This is similar to peope who think WW2 was bc of the Holocaust. There were many other economic and State rights issues which contributed greatly to the war. As a "conservative", I have to admit that these types of narratives are very popular among the right b/c it exonerates the moral indictment towards whites for the historical wrongs that were done; just like how racism is popular among the left. The right has tokenized blacks as much as the left has.

For the record Roots the movie is a big portion on how americans see history, the writer Aley Haley had to have a dignified retreat when asked about how his novel had influenced how americans see history. “I was just trying to give my people a myth to live by,” he took to saying. He could have avoided all the grief if he and his publishers had simply labeled the book what it was-a historical novel valid in its essential narrative but informed by the imagination.
