I always try to get any and all dust out first with a vacuum crevice tool . This will also bring out cobwebs and stink bugs ( dead or alive ). Remove the needle throat plate cause the majority of lint will be between there and feed dogs underneath .Then Douse all internals with a good lubricating oil like LPS in a spray can which lubricates and protects by remaining on the moving metal parts . Now let it set for at least a day before staring up machine . Then the regular sewing machine oil with long skinny tube applicator every where thats clearly marked as a lubricating spot or area. . Anywhere that metal rubs against metal . Avoid the motor as they don't stand up well to excessive oil . Maybe just a couple light drops of genuine sewing machine oil on the pull side only . Stay away from the rear which houses the armature brushes . Your treadle parts can be oiled generously . Hope this helps . Happy New Year John

Very nice. I actually managed to find a model 77 for 30$ at the DI. The machine itself is in great shape other than the pulley wheel having small a deformation in the rubber from sitting too long, came in its own table too, though that's in less than great shape. Mine has a knee operated pedal, and I find that it doesn't really disengage properly. Do you have any resources that can point out how the mechanism works, or how to fix it? I might end up swapping it out eventually, but I want to put a few projects through it in its properly working state before I decide to change anything like the foot pedal. Oh! And before I forget, it only came with one bobbin spool, I've seen around the internet that using other bobbins in machines not meant for them can range from just not working, to damaging equipment. How can I tell what spools will work, and if it absolutely requires it's own type/size, how can I figure out what it is, and where to get more? Thanks for your help!

Hello John. I am looking for a bobbin case #741 for my Florence Family Rotary manufactured by White Sewing Machine, Cleveland Ohio. My Florence Family Rotary uses early White Sewing Machine Parts--machines with serial numbers pre-194100. Can you let me know where I might find the #741 bobbin case? I have the manual and photograph showing what the bobbin case looks like. Thanks for your time.

Hey John - I’ve had a White Rotary for some time and I use it daily and love it dearly. I’ve been running into a lot of issues with my top thread getting tangled and bunched around the bobbin case, almost every time I sew with it. Curious if you have any suggestions - thanks!
@johnmeredithstudios8557
@johnmeredithstudios8557 5 жыл бұрын
Andy , Sorry so long to respond . I must've missed this , somehow . Sounds like your top tension is non-existent . Make sure your top tension has some resistance . These machines require alot of top tension resistance . You may need to rebuild the top tension making sure that there isn't some debris in between top tension discs preventing them from providing its normal resistance to the top thread somehow . The bottom thread tension should be about half of what the top is . Hope this helps John

If it WAS working when you put it away and now it's not . Sounds Like it is dry and needs lube. Try lubing every spot that is marked with a red hole and every spot where metal moves against metal . I usually use a high quality spray lube then follow up with sewing machine oiler and oil . Really saturate everything and put paper towels under it cause it will drip for awhile . You may want to the the hand wheel off to get underneath , marking the washers with permanent marker underneath where they were so you can reassemble the same way .Although I question if that is assembled correct when it won't turn if its too tight .let it set and soak up the oil BEFORE trying it again . Maybe turn it over by hand a few times to help distribute that oil . Up top through the ends and underneath with oil . If you feel comfortable with that . Good Luck .

Hi John, Thanks for showing your White Rotary. I have a similar machine. I need to get a replacement powercord and foot pedal for it. Does it use a special/unique foot pedal? Can I use a foot pedal for other machines.
@johnmeredithstudios8557
@johnmeredithstudios8557 6 жыл бұрын
Yes the pedal is nothing special . They are all just a rheostat ( a variable power control ) . Any mechanical control pedal will work . The cords what has to match with the plug in to the machine . eBay or Sewing Parts Online for that and or both .
@johnmeredithstudios8557
@johnmeredithstudios8557 6 жыл бұрын
Any mechanical foot pedal controller from any newer machines will work . You can probably find power cords on eBay for those Older Rotary Machines . You can also try Sears online for Kenmore sewing machine parts first . Also try Sewing Parts Online for your cord and or pedal . Your power cord is special and different for that machine . Look at the connector three male ends sticking out the back of the machine under the motor to see what the female part plugin should look like . A lot of slightly newer Kenmore Sewing machines will use a similar setup . From the 60's era . Hope this helps .

Anon , Thanks for your interest in my KZbin entries . Hard to remember this machines set up having long ago sold it and without your photo's but I will try . I believe they used s conventional wall type plug in with the male end to the motor which can be very confusing to most , myself included . However that motor's male plug should be plugged into the pedal's female side of that setup and not directly into the wall . There should be a section of cord / wiring that does plug into wall ( male plug end ) . The Wall power plug section that also has a connector somehow that plugs to back of machine that is a rectangle shaped plug Female side on wire harness that plugs into 3 prong male recep on the rear of the machine usually close to the backside of electric motor . This is all very hard to describe without photo/ video of your machine . Thanks and good luck . I hope you get it figured out . Why don't you like this video and Subscribe to my KZbin channel , that way when I do one with a better description you can see . Namaste , Meredith Out .

Is smell coming from knee pedal , cause its like a rheostat with open wires that get hot . So it may be burning off the 50 years of dust from sitting . This will quickly subside with use .

Hi John, I was just given aWhite Rotary model 43, I believe. It’s been in my friends garage for ages. The machine is in a cabinet with a knee power pedal will this be very difficult to change over to a foot pedal? Also, do you know of a source for a wooden base? Thank you, Marci V from Southern CA
@johnmeredithstudios8557
@johnmeredithstudios8557 6 жыл бұрын
You said it's already in a cabinet with a knee controller . Once you get used to a knee controller it's really nice and easy to use . I always have to look around for my foot pedal controller on the floor and reposition almost everytime I use it . Shouldn't be hard to use any foot pedal controller though if you prefer . Make sure it's all unplugged from any power source and the two wires that now go to your knee pedal controller need to go to your foot pedal instead . Plug the power cord back into the wall and your up and running .

johnmeredithstudios Thank you. I don’t really need the pedal I was just trying to figure out how to redo the old wiring, so I thought to buy a double split lead and power pedal cord. Someone else suggested how to replace a new electrical cord with the new one. Now I need to find a new rubber piece that goes at the end of the motor because I believe it’s the original and has gone flat on one part by resting against the hand wheel, any suggestions? I also don’t know what it’s called. Thanks for your time John, I really appreciate it.

Marcia , Yes its a motor pulley . Very reasonable $4.95 at my Kalamazoo Sewing Center . The outside diameter is not as important as the inside diameter . I believe it to be 9/32" . I always keep a few spares but you can buy them locally or through Sewing Parts Online . The two I have are part # 417 ( smaller Outside Diameter for less speed more power ) and # 410 Larger Outside Diameter for more high speed sewing and more pressure in case the motor spring pressure is too weak to force the solid rubber motor pulley isn't tight enough against the metal hand wheel . I will be doing more instructional videos eventually . So if you want to Like this video and subscribe to my channel . You'll be alerted when I finally do another . Namaste' .

@@johnmeredithstudios8557 Thank you for this information. I have my mom's 1950 White rotary Kenmore; & we picked up a White 77 to restore & maybe donate to a women's charity. I have been wondering where the best quality motor pulleys & bobbin winder tires could be sourced, as well a bobbins. I realize this information is 3 years ago; but it gives me a starting point. I have read conflicting things on other vintage sewing machine forums just very recently as to whether the motor pulleys from SewingPartsOnline were good quality or not. Your suggestion to get them from my local sewing supply store?? not sure what that means. I don't have a local sewing repair shop. But the bobbin tire winder was really stumping us so good to know it is the most common one.

Bobbin Winder Rubbers are available in abundance everywhere as those aren't any different from the most common size . Motor Pulleys I recommend brand new although many id's and od's are available . The right ID is more important than the outside diameter . Smaller give machine more power down low larger and you have more top speed of overall machine . Either ones fine although I will choose smaller and more power everytime . So measure your motor' s shaft OD for thr correct ID on the pulley . Hope this helps . John

That machine works well with soft glove/ chaps leather . It has a lot of momentum to get it thumping through the leather . I recommend # 110-18 Leather piercing needles . You are better off helping the machine via hand wheel to make the first Stitch hole . Then just keep the material moving going at a constant rate better to not stop if you don't have to . It'll handle it if you don't expect a Saddle Sewing Machine and the leather doesn't get ridiculously thick ...It will even handle 120-20 Leather Needles for thicker stuff . Just don't get to crazy with tougher leather and thicknesses . After all , It is still a domestic sewing machine .

Sounds like your pedal plug is wired incorrectly . Does the light work off the pedal pressure ? Some models I have seen have a machine to controller cord connection that is a match for the one that plugs into the wall just as easily , very dangerous . This will cause that machine's motor to run full blast , till it's UNPLUGGED . Seems to be a common theme with this type of rotary machine . A lot of people have experienced the same problem . An extremely easy way to fix it would be to wire your light and pedal separately with a 2 prong plugs . Then you'd have separate plug-ins for the light and motor that are clearly labeled . A lot of older portables use the same setup . Screwed down in it's own compartment . If you wire up the motor and light separately . ( www.sewingpartsonline.com/knee-control-with-cord-705w.aspx ) .You'd then have a 2 post plug on the motor's cord from the rear of your machine , by passing and removing the confusing 3 prong plug . Save it in case you'd want to go back to the original set up . All light's have just 2 wires so install a simple 2 prong plug to it's end as well . Available at every hardware store . Buy 2 two wire plugs so you can wire the light's as well then replace the 2 prong plug . If enough people request it I could later make a video . A how to video . If you subscribe , hit a like and the Bell you'll see it as soon as I produce it . There has to be enough request's though , these are very time consuming to make . A 7 minute video uploaded on KZbin seems to take about 3 hours on my cpu . I really don't understand why it takes so long . I have a very solid connection here and fast internet . If anyone has any tips please comment below . Thanks for your interest . John

Assuming that you have adjusted the presser foot to its maximum pressure . The feed dogs need to be raised up . One screw underneath the machine . Too much up adjustmnt will rub the underside of the throat plate . So bring it up to touch then back it off a whisper .

@johnmeredithstudios8557

Laura , Just Conventional Sewing Machine Needles are fine . With a flat side here's the ones I use most often : Conventional size 90/14 www.sewingpartsonline.com/universal-needles-inspira-10pk.aspx? . However , because these machines are so heavy duty , rugged and simple . I have also used 100/16 and 110/18 . More than likely that's my new normal needle . Then also Leather point needles in those 3 sizes as well . The Monster size needles 120/20 are out there To big for some sewing machines . All these needles are the same length , critical when it comes to the timing of the machine . Difference is the diameter of these needles gets larger with each size gain . Stronger when going through several layers , less likely to break especially with leather material . Just remember the bigger the needle the bigger the hole too . There has to be is a compromise there . Once you sew a piece of leather the holes are there so you can't redo it . It has to be right the first time . This machine is a domestic , so does NOT take industrial size needles that are longer than normal with no flat side to that needle . 110/18 are about as big as I go depending on my thickness , however I still will switch back and forth from conventional 90/14 needles to Denim Ball Point 90/14 to Stretch Stitch 90/14 and Leather tip 90/14 , 100/16 , 110/18 all the way up to 120/20 leather points when the work calls for it . Generally I stick to 90/14 unless tackling leather projects . I've found sometimes Stretch Stitch needles are almost magical when a machine has a persistent skip and even perfect timing still seem to produce an occasional skip in the sewing very once in awhile . Assuming you haven't slowed the machine in the middle of a section causing the top tension spring to adequately draw up the threads tension . I hope this helps .
