Sunny Jim why? Why do you have to be so rude? Our comments did nothing to you, didn't mess with you, so why do you feel the need to be rude? You don't know any of us or our lives and if listening to music helps calms us down then that's what we're gonna do. Please don't be so rude.

The writer said the song is "lyrically fairly meaningless" and it was more a song to focus on singing. Fleet foxes had actually hoped it would make people laugh but instead it confuses them. The lyrics are kind of about the painful loss of innocence (like sweet kids become drug dealers later on and friendships becoming less important than trends etc) Robin even said he meant for the song to be mildly uplifting like "whistle while you work" from snow white So I guess no one died...

I mean, the writer might say it's meaningless but there are a heck load of references to the french revolution in this. Also, no writer writes something as specific as this without any inspiration.

i always had a feeling that they meant the archangel michael? like he lead the war with god's angels against satan and won, so maybe michael falling dead means that satan won? and that ties in with you saying about the painful loss of innocence (i'm not at all religious anymore, but it kinda still sticks w me)

LYRICS I was following the [8x] I was following the pack All swaddled in their coats With scarves of red tied 'round their throats To keep their little heads From fallin' in the snow And I turned 'round and there you go And, Michael, you would fall And turn the white snow red as strawberries In the summertime I was following the pack All swaddled in their coats With scarves of red tied 'round their throats To keep their little heads From fallin' in the snow And I turned 'round and there you go And, Michael, you would fall And turn the white snow red as strawberries In the summertime

*Psst Dodie* The lead singer of Fleet Foxes (who wrote the song) said the lyrics are pretty meaningless. He just wanted to start the album out with a song that was focused on singing. He kinda likes how it confuses people.

This song is about that old story about the girl who was pressured into taking her scarf off by her lover, and when she finally did, her head fell off. That story is in turn based on a Grimm Brother’s fairytale about a stepmother who chopped off her stepson’s head and, to cover up, tied a handkerchief around his neck. ...Not really sure why it’s based on that, but there ya go!

Sleepy Actually White Winter Hymnal was apperently written from ''personal experience''. ''Fleet Foxes songwriter Robin Pecknold revealed to Rolling Stone that his songs are "written from personal experience,” including “Hymnal,” which was about a time when his friends ditched him in middle school. The lyrics might have been about childhood past, but the melody came from a familiar source - namely, Walt Disney. “The idea was a song like “Whistle While You Work,” from Snow White, you know?” Pecknold said. “So it started with that very beginning thing, the first kind of like, melody. And then once the verse was done, it just seemed like it lent itself to the repetition, you know?”

Melanie asked so here it is! I think of this song as a little frame of a childhood memory - maybe of a five or six year old. He is with a bunch of children, maybe running after the older kids, who just look like a bunch of coats since they are so bundled up. He thinks in his child's mind that the scarves keep their heads from falling off. Then he looks behind him and his friend has fallen and hurt himself and there is bright red blood in the snow. Sometimes a memory like that sticks with you even though you can't remember anything else about it. So Michael is the kid.

The people who wrote it said that they were literally just singing random things and that it has no meaning. But I like what you think, though I think it is more like decapitation than just hurting oneself because of... You know... With scarves of red tied round their throats, to keep their little heads from falling in the snow, then I turned round and there you go

Sophia Wilson that’s a really cool interpretation. I personally think it’s about the French Revolution. Everyone’s making their was to the guillotine, and many are wearing red scarves to show they are pro-revolution, as to not get their heads cut off. then this michael person was guillotined and his blood turned the snow “red as strawberries in the summertime” :) I’m not sure if this is totally right but after analyzing it- this is what I came up with!

Yay! I get to give a quick history lesson: So long story short, there was a time in France where if you believed in God, you were persecuted and even executed. (See: "I was following the *pack* all swallowed in their coats, with scarves of *red* tied round their *throats* ") So, naturally, people kept their religion a secret as not to get executed via decapitation. (See: "To keep their little *heads from falling* in the snow.") Others however, such as this specific prophet named *Michael,* didn't care to hide their beliefs and religious practices. (See: "Then I turned round and there'd you go.") So one winter, this prophet Michael was persecuted and decapitated in front of a crowd for his beliefs. (See: "And *Michael,* you would *fall* and turn the white snow *red* as strawberries in the summertime.") This song, however, was not written about this story, as the creators of this song, Fleet Foxes, claim that they wrote the song to have no particular meaning. However, there's speculation that there's some relation to this story in the song, because it's too much of a coincidence not to be. And you know what we say about coincidence: The universe is rarely so lazy. 😉

Actually White Winter Hymnal was apperently written from ''personal experience''.

INFO ON THIS SONG Lead singer and songwriter Robin Pecknold (from Daytrotter): "It's lyrically fairly meaningless. As an introduction to the record, (this was intended to be the opening track on the album), we thought it would be nice to start it with a simple jam that's focussed on singing - on the record it starts with a tongue-in-cheek harmony thing that we hoped would make people laugh or something but I think it just confuses them. This is my favorite song to play live, though singing it live is sometimes difficult because the lyrics are so vague. Weird how that works!"

I always saw they were in some army or troop wearing heavy coats to keep warm, walking past the people who were hung from trees (scarves of red keeping them suspended above the snow) and then they hear a bang and he turns around and his friend (or himself ) Michael is shot first which turns the snow red like strawberries

History of the song: during the Russian Revolution, people had to wear red scarves (similar to how Jews had to wear the Star of David during WWII) and if they were seen without a scarf they were to be hanged and so, quite literally, their scarves would "keep their heads from falling in the snow" Beautiful song until you observe the lyrics

There's a Grimm Brothers fairytale where a stepmother kills her son and reattaches his head with a handkerchief or scarf in some versions so that people wouldn't know he was dead (hence the 'with scarves of red tied round their throats to keep their little heads from falling in the snow). I've always interpreted this song as Michael being the dead boy with the scarf around his neck!

The writers said it was mainly meaningless, but there’s references to the French Revolution and WW2 where people would wear red scarves on/around their necks to show allegiance to the Nazis (ie if you weren’t wearing one you were killed). Either way, whatever it’s references are, it’s a beautiful song ✨

So recently i asked my dad for ur book for christmas and i never really get super cool presents like iphones or really expensive stuff. Most of the time i get crayola stuff and yeh. Anyways he said maybe but not to get my hopes up and i was really sad because when he says that it never really happens. A couple days passed and my parents decide to divorce and im just broken. I go with my dad and just bawled my eyes out that night. A week passed and my dad calls me and tells me to walk home early today and when i get home he has the book and it just made my day and i was so happy that words cant even describe it. He says i cant open it till christmas and ive never been so excited in my life I just wanted to give u a formal thank u dodie for making my life filled with joy. I cant thank u enough. ❤
