I just LOVE this song since forever in its day. What an incredible orchestration 😍🥰 The way it starts with an orchestra and when he starts singing that first line…???? MAJOR GOOSE BUMPS!! My erector pili muscles are getting a thrilling work out. Then when the organ chimes in and I just got another ROUND of GOOSE BUMPS!!!! This was just amazing!!!! Thank you for doing this classic. A very wonderful blast from the past❤🎉

Gary Brooker had a good voice in 1967, when he and Procol Harum debuted this masterpiece at 22 years old. This performance was at age 61, and his voice is like fine wine. It aged into a great voice. This was the finest performance of this iconic masterpiece, you will ever hear. Rest easy Gary. While you will be missed, you will never be forgotten.

This was my favorite song (and #1 hit) when it came out in 1967 as my family were preparing to emigrate to the US. It was the summer of love in San Francisco, our destination. Scott McKenzie's song "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" was also popular at the time. Procol Harum were not as popular in the US at that time as they were in England, but I bought their self-titled album and played it for my friends who loved it. This concert was almost 40 years later, and Gary Brooker was the only remaining member of the original band. He still had the great voice that made the song a massive hit way back when. So sad that he died in 2022, RIP Gary Brooker.

When I first saw this concert, it brought back so many memories and emotions. Our move to CA was the culmination of my parent's lifelong struggle to create a better life for our family. They were German immigrants who came to England with nothing, and when I was born, we lived in a house without electricity or running water in a village called Longhope.

This song has always been one of the classics of British rock. I wish more people would react to the original first and then this performance. The original was extraordinary for its time and this just enhances its position. This is only 2 of 4 verses but you'll rarely hear the others. Just as good, if not better. It's hard to mess up when you steal from JS Bach.

@@richdiddens4059 The original Procol Harum were a great band, with Gary Brooker on piano, Matthew Fisher on the Hammond organ, and Robin Trower on guitar. Although Trower played on their debut, self-titled album, he joined the band after "A whiter Shade of Pale" was already recorded.

I am from Denmark and did not see this particular concert, but the band toured around Denmark with the orchestra, so I managed to see the concert in a town nearby. The original song is just pure class, but the orchestra with the choir just adds some whipcream on top of the cake......and it just melts on your tongue.

Gary Brooker, playing the piano here, still sounds great. A little gruffer than '67, but still chill inducing. (new sub) Gary did say "Thank you very much for having us" which was cut off. SOME BACKGROUND INFO (just in case you do not know): The concert was filmed at the Ledreborg Castle in Denmark w-the Royal Danish Concert Orchestra. It has been "the most-played song in public places for more than 75 years." There have been some misconceptions surrounding the meaning of the song - see kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpeaZIutnr98fLM for the interview w-composer/lead singer Gary Brooker & writer Keith Reid. Gary was founder of the band begun in '67; he passed away in February of 2022, Keith passed in March of 2023. It is also said that Reid was "going to reveal the true meaning before he died" but he died before he explained anything. Many people believe it was about a drunken one-night stand. Contrary to popular belief, the song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach but was inspired by & does reference Bach's "Sleepers, Wake!" and "Air on the G String!" As per Reid, the line "as the miller told his tale" is definitely not a reference to Chaucer's Miller's Tale. Reid has repeatedly explained he had never read The Canterbury Tales when he wrote A Whiter Shade of Pale. Procol Harum is said to be the name of a friend's cat. The name is a mis-spelling of the Latin phrase Procul Harun (roughly meaning "far beyond these things"), or that it was a corruption of Procellarm, a vast ocean on the Moon. In Roman Times Vestal Virgins were priestesses and acquired their name after Vesta. the goddess of the hearth and home. It was their duty to not only keep the home fires burning but to also remain a virgin for 30 years. AMAZING SONG - AMAZING GARY! COURT CASE: Matthew Fisher, a founding member and the organist of Procol Harum, won a High Court battle over who wrote “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” He played organ on the 1967 recording of the hit, which was long credited to lead singer Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid, and Fisher argued that he wrote the distinctive organ melody. And on December 20, 2006, Justice William Blackburne ruled that Fisher was entitled to 40 percent of the copyright. Fisher had wanted half (50%) but the court decided that lead singer Gary Brooker’s input was more substantial.
