Thanks so much for including me in one of your videos! This track was my first attempt at a professional record and mix two years ago. So lots of issues. Great job navigating that. I've learned a lot since then. Fascinating to see someone with their own take on the track. My challenge is I write and play the songs and then I have to switch gears and become the mix engineer. I know too much about all of the parts! I put in my vote to hear this track mixed on your big console. This song is meant to be all analog so would love to see what you could do with it in your true realm. Great job Wyste!

I know what you mean about wanting to hear it on the console! I know this is about the Console 1, but it's driving me nuts hearing how limiting it is. It doesn't add any character. I'm watching him mix this, and I'm just dying to grab some FabFilter plugins, run stuff through some UAD MkII channel strips for some real drive, use Klanghelm's amazing SDRR saturation and MJUC compressor to give it some analog flavor. That's my answer to not having a Neumann console, and I'm much happier than I think I would be with his workflow, because the small console makes it too hard to recall stuff you want to change later in the mix. I'm also finding myself screaming "add some automation!" so stuff builds up to a "wall of sound" instead of just having it be there. I'd like to hear that organ sneak in and maybe even have the guitars fade out to an organ outro. Funny how we all hear things differently. My conclusion on the Console 1: no thanks. Feels like a really limited tool that over complicates the workflow without adding any real color or value to the overall sound. I'm super happy to be on the UAD train with FabFilter, Klanghelm, and a few others for spice.

Great video, like most others I was pleased to see you struggling and you do need to update that driver, I bought the Console 1 plus a UA Apollo Twin a month ago and am very pleased with the way I can integrate the Apollo plugins into the Console 1. At present I'm revisiting a lot of my old mixes, doing a stereo bounce and then remix on the Console - just to see if there really is a difference, with the 2 I've done so far I'd have to say that there is, not necessarily better but different. I've also nearly made the plunge and almost gone completely over to Reaper - forced to use ProTools for education, industry standard and all that, DAW of choice has always been Samplitude because its a one stop shop, I can record, mix, Master (as in pull your own teeth) and burn a CD, remember CD's? all within the one program. My only head scratching bit was you had one verb only and very little panning, I was impressed with the lack of compression. Great job, bring on the Neumann

Wyste, thanks for this hands-on mix. Since you appreciate tactile and time-saving interfaces, I'd like to mention a product that I think would be incredibly useful to you, and that is the Elgato Stream Deck. Originally designed for live streaming gamers, its is basically a software switcher (for changing scenes and sources with broadcasting software like OBS). Since it can put any keyboard combination on a pushbutton switch, with nearly any kind of icon you like (including animated gifs!) along with multi-actions (with timing between actions down to the millisecond!) the Stream Deck is not only a real time saver, but it also helps with those less-used keyboard shortcuts. Of course, I config the most-often used shortcuts, but its the ones I don't use that often that really benefit from the Stream Deck implementation because I don't have to stop and look at a menu. I even made my own old-school Transport for Reaper, and, with the USB extension cable, I can put the Stream Deck anywhere I like and punch-in/out, etc. with total Transport control like my old Studer remote, lol. On the toggle keyswitch function (which I use for Control-R in Reaper) I put a red icon for the "on" state, so I know when I'm in record by looking at the button on the Stream Deck. You can configure and unlimited number of profiles, and the software supports nested multi-level menus, folders, and even can be configured to switch to a profile when an app is started. So, on my Music Production Menu, I press the Reaper button, and my Reaper profile with shortcuts automatically loads. 3rd party developers are coming out with new free functions every day. One that I recently added to my Reaper profile is the CPU monitor. So, I can see the CPU load right on a lighted button. There is also KZbin, Twitch, and other live stream integration too. I'm positive that once you take a look at this device, we'll soon see it sitting on your desk!

Dude, I watched a lot of your "snake oil" videos and I was really excited to see your Console 1 review and I think you did a justice to the product, showing it's use to a great extend, but the mix approach... I have heard of LCR mixing, but never heard of CCC mixing until today. This could have just sounded so much better should you have used ANY pan changes... seriously... You got synth and organ, two rhythm guitars, both of these would greatly benefit from some panning.... maybe 45L/45R for the guitars and 60L/60R for the keys... numbers can differ but it would have greatly open the sound, reduce the phasy effect of overlapping instruments and, well, you got my point. Level and EQ wise you did great job, but how you missed the panorama is just beyond me.

It seems like mixing those changes the intention of the artist in such a huge way and that distorted guitars should be adjusted properly in the first place. I remember a song with 2 parallel leadguitars u EQed and it was basically about giving both of them separate spaces to improve the interaction between the melodies!

Guitar players always write songs that showcase an insane amount of extra riffing at the expense of the actual song. literally have no breathing room whatsoever, like even the best guitar players of all time didn’t need to layer 5 different guitar tracks. Such a cluttered arrangement that the mixing becomes a Herculean task.

Excellent video! Yes, mix it on the Neumann! Kudos to the artist. Real music played by someone with talent. (Except the drums sound a little to clean to be real, but whatever!) Where is the link to his stuff? Love the channel and you're a truly kind and talented person. It would have taken me a month to figure out how to do a full mix with that thing and it would have ended up back in the box half way through that song! You're amazing, and it would be way nice if you'd remember to put links to the products and artists you feature in your videos. I'm know the viewers would like it, and I'm pretty sure the artists and companies would, too. I know this was about the Console 1. (I'd return it, too.) But, some thoughts on the mix for next time: Those guitars would benefit a lot from some tricks that Warren Huart uses a lot. He'll make 2 duplicates of each, run a HPF on one, and a LPF on another and EQ them very differently, pitch shift them down an octave, distort them like crazy, then bring it up just enough in the mix so it's just barely audible. Adds balls and warmth to vocals, guitars, almost anything, but you can't make it out in the final mix. He'd probably also pitch shift them about 6 cents in each direction in addition to the time shift and some panning differences. He's got some great tricks for adding texture and depth to stuff like those guitars.

@@LonelyRocker Impressive! I might know someone who would be interested in doing that. He's currently in the middle of scoring some film projects, but if you want, I'll ask him to let me know the next time he mics up his kit. Super talented, very heavy Neil Peart influence. I think his style would sound great with this material. Ironically, all I'm hearing in this mix are the drums, and it's clearly a guitar oriented song. I'm only at 1:33:12 so far. I'm interested to see if he realizes the least human instrument is driving the mix. I think it might be electronic music syndrome drawing his ear to the most robotic element. Yo mixing on Solo mode is very dangerous. You need to check the sitting of your element with the others everytime before moving to next one. You did the kick and went to the bass straight away you can lose valuable time like that and end up in very uncharted territory. And that's a good advice I'm giving you. Specially when you have 1 hour to mix a song after a 8hours recording session and everyone is waiting and watching you. And the next slot of has already been booked...😃🤣

@@mikejezo I think my main point is that blanket saying something is “dangerous” is a poor attitude to mixing. There’s no rules and what works for someone may not work for someone else. Hi. I know you are using REAPER so,,,,,I recently installed reference 4 software and it seemed to be working fine. Yesterday I downloaded REAPER latest version 5.973 and my pc crashed. Can't get past the welcome screen and keyboard/mouse don't function. Anybody else have similar problem?

the metering is off on my console1. It moves before the actual sound. How can I solve this?
