Small Property Timber Stand Improvement Tips!

A lot of hunters and land managers are working to improve smaller tracts of land. Every tsi video i see ever only shows the stand in summer when everything is lush and thick. How do the deer relate in winter when all the leaves have dropped

Great information 👍🏻. Anyway you can do an entire video on tsi when it involves beech. Along the lines of when to cut and treat to prevent the root suckers from taking over a wood lot.

You want the suckers That's what the deer feed on the young growing stuff and that's what makes your cover

@@craigcowan9066 not beech 😖. Deer in NY will not touch the stuff. I’ve seen first hand 100 plus acre lots logged and turned into monocultures of beech suckers. 😖

I’m nervous because any research I have found says never hack and squirt, basal bark treat, or even cut and stump treat in the winter as it won’t control the root suckering of beech 🥴. I’m trying to avoid that at all costs but unfortunately winter is my only real time to get in there and cut or treat.

It's not all about logging to get someone in there. Find a commercial firewood outfit. They can do a lot of what you need. Cut and remove the trunks and leave the tops for bedding cover. If they cut while the foliage is still on the trees that's instant bedding cover and food. Deer love those green leaves.

Love the thinking of 'be more aggressive' on small parcels, and that big tress don't always mean $$$. What time of year do you like to hack/squirt & girdle?

hack and squirt is usually only viable in the summer, girdle is generally effective year around.

Really you can use either method almost all year round. The only time we don't is roughly February-late April when sap is flowing because it will push the herbicide out.

What do you recommend for more bottomland areas with water oak, willow oak, swamp oak, hickory, elm, cypress, button bush, etc.? Most TSI videos seem to favor the more upland areas, which can be burned.

Bottom land hardwoods are typically suppose to be more closed canopy with the main disturbance being flooding and beavers. thin the invasives and some of the mid story if needed to kill unhealthy trees but basal areas should likely be over 100.

On the video you show some single girdles and some double girdles. Can you explain the situation where you would do a double girdle and spray vs just a single ?

The double girdles were done on a location where we didn't have herbicide. It might not kill all trees though. We recommend using herbicide.

It's not at all destruction of a forest, quite the opposite actually.

The woodland ecosystem needs a wide range for forest ages. Not all forest should be old growth. Some species rely on new growth forests created after natural events such as fires and storms that kill large trees. We have effectively suppressed naturally occurring forest fires which has led to an unnatural forestation of much of the eastern US. Creating a variety of forest types is actually a very good thing and increases biodiversity. Its not just good for deer, but also many songbirds, insects, small mammals, and plant species that do not thrive in closed-canopy old-growth forests.
