Lol somehow whitey ford and ron guidry just came up in conversation with my 2 buddies, and instantly I went to this scene, and specifically the part you're mentioning AND I said the same thing, seeing Whitey plead for the sanity, the cutaway, then back to whitey,,who is already down and out, and still continually getting pelted with pretzels... Add onto it, the way over the top announcer voices and you have one of the greatest Simpsons scenes ever

There is so much here. The idea of everyone collectively waiting to take their first bite, the glee Mr. Burns shows at receiving a soccer mom vehicle (and the unspoken knowledge that he is to immediately drive it away), and as others point out the cutaway to Ford's unconsciousness. This era of Simpsons is some of the densest comedy of all time. I've seen it so many times and there is always something new to make me crack up.

Dude, talk about a collective capture! You said it perfectly!
@outsideofadream3 жыл бұрын
A little thing-but really a major thing-the Simpsons did well is capture how sports commentators and news anchors of the time sounded. So when it ends on that perfect line ("This is a... this is a *black* day for baseball") it sounds like something you'd hear from an actual sportscast.

I love everything about this clip. Whitey (who is not mentioned once in the episode, nor actually voice by anyone) going from pleading with the angry mob to being knocked out by pretzels. Not to mention the reason for the angry crowd -- Mr Burns (also not mentioned once prior to this) clearly rigging a car contest. Perfect Simpsons moment.

I may be wrong, but I feel like this scene was influenced by when Dodger fans were throwing baseballs on the field, attempting to hit Cardinal players, thus resulting in the Dodgers forfeiting the match, back in 1995. To this day, that’s the last time a forfeit took place in the MLB.
