▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
If you’ve been watching The Last of Us on HBO, and are unfamiliar with the game series, or even need a quick refresher, today’s video is going to cover the main warring factions that are active during the first season. The two primary parties at odds in this world are FEDRA, the Federal disaster response agency, and the fireflies… an organized and militant group of rebels who have been actively opposing federal occupation of various quarantine zones around the United States.

I would bet that FEDRA and the Fireflies utilize different raider groups and other gangs against each other. We saw some of this with Marlene’s dealings with smugglers. If real-world asymmetric civil wars are anything to go on, one could infer that FEDRA has at times also hired raiders to help them fight the Fireflies. Maybe they’d pay them to attack a city just overthrew the FEDRA garrison? Stuff like this happens IRL in places like Columbia, Myanmar, Syria, and parts of Africa.

Which is one of the reasons why I root for FEDRA. Because only they have the ressources and equipment to keep their inhabitents safe and they are pretty much the only way to restore things to how they were before the outbreak. If I lived in the world of The Last of Us, I would have joined FEDRA.

Both groups are the same. When I watched the first episode I made a comment to my friend that it was interesting that the fireflies the “freedom fighters” had a girl locked in their room that they were holding hostage. My friend said “well she’s a high value target it makes sense”. So I guess the difference between the fireflies and fedra is that fedra is an honest totalitarian regime and fireflies are a not honest totalitarian regime.

I mean, maybe, and it makes sense to have that take away from the perspective of the story, but judging a large, presumably continent-spanning political organisation based on keeping one girl confined seems a bit excessive. It's better to judge them as a potential government on their ideology, organisational effectiveness and maybe broader tactics. (in which case I'm still personally pro-FEDRA, but we've not really seen enough in the show to properly judge)
@weignerleigner3037
@weignerleigner3037 Жыл бұрын
@@merrymachiavelli2041 I mean the idea of a group of organized “freedom fighters” is kind of ironic imo because the idea of an organized govt in general is counterintuitive to the idea of freedom. Freedom would be what Joel and Ellie are doing. Living on their own doing what they want not what some group wants. The fireflies don’t want to end fedra they just want to replace them. People think of “freedom” as some glorious great thing but it’s actually not. The world population is in a state of freedom it always has been no govt or person controls the entire world, and the world has had non stop war and conflict since civilization has arose. Absolute Freedom does not create an absolute safe society which is what people really want. But the double edge to that sword is safety requires sacrificing your ability to make decisions on your own, which in turn typically escalates to widespread corruption and unhappiness amongst the population as one group of people cannot possible know what will satisfy the needs of massive populations of people. So in that sense deciding wether fedra or fireflies is better is like asking someone if they prefer aids or cancer. Different things but they lead to similar results.

Exactly. Too many competing voices and divisions would only drive humanity further to extinction. I'd 100% be joining FEDRA to guard humanity and try to drag them back to dominance over the Earth. Whining because there is a structured strict society in a post-apocalypse is insane. Not to mention that we see the effect of the Fireflies taking over every time. They're an insane terrorist group who collapses QZs and doesn't have a fraction of the resources and manpower to do something like manufacture a vaccine, let alone make one.

Bit of a correction if we are using the HBO version of the scenario, the act of bombing wasn't the first choice for the world, they all wanted a cure/vaccine. just a random thought while watching… i was so confused why FEMA wouldn’t be the governing body/do what FEDRA does in the game and the show? the creation of FEDRA seemed so redundant since disaster response is a major part of FEMA. however in the context of 2003, FEMA was under Homeland Security and the push for most of the departments under it was prevention of/protection from terrorism due to 9/11. it wasn’t really a more distinct agency until post-Katrina in 2005. so i guess the creation of FEDRA somewhat makes sense.

In the last of us game when the outbreak happened in 2013 sometime later FEDRA decided to overthrow the bureaucratic political system( we don’t know if it was several random high ranking generals who ordered the overthrow or the actual president) FEDRA basically wanted to take charge as they believed the politicians didn’t take the necessary steps to keep the outbreak at bay and keep the population safe. Early in the outbreak FEDRA consolidated control over all major cities and towns along with major infrastructure. By 2033 which is when the events of the game take place, only three U.S. branches remain: The CDC(headquartered in Atlanta) they are used to make pamphlets on infection for civilians and they study the infection, the United States military they are the branch responsible for the security of all Quarantine Zones, and then FEDRA they are the central command of the three branches, and hold high ranking officers of the military and officials By the time of 2033 some quarantine zones have been abandoned by the military either from lack of supplies or revolutions such as in Pittsburgh QZ Some continued to operate such as Denver,Atlanta,Boston,Chicago,etc To get rid of the short history lesson FEDRA is the lasts of us’s counterpart to real world FEMA So FEMA doesn’t really exist there’s only pretty much FEDRA

I'm very curious to see how Joel's fate will be handled. Will his part of the story end with end of Season 1. Or will he be a part of at least the beginning of Season 2...My gut feeling is that HBO knows they have a big hit here so they want to stretch the two games into 3 Seasons. So part 1 of the game will be covered in S1 and the first half of S2. Because Pascal is such a likable star of the show, I think Joel will be in at least half of S2, before Ellie and Dina's story continues without him. And the second half of S2 and all of S3 will cover part 2 of the game. And then Pascal will probably be brought back in a flashback, at some point in S3, or perhaps for a full pocket episode, so we see him again in a great way before the series ends...

There are some things you can add about FEDRA. It is implied that when Fedra received power that there was some kind of coup against Congress. This was apparent in the game intro in which a general or presumably the president stated that the bureaucrats were out of power. This line in my mind sounds like elected officials were taken out of power instead since Fedra in itself is a governmental bureaucracy. Thus this line was clear political manipulation for the public that congress was nothing more than a “beuacracy” and needed to be replaced. What I think happened is The executive branch received too much power either by congress itself due to utilizing the emergency powers acts or by some kind of coup. This makes sense when you consider that in the last of us game there were still mentions of an Attorny General still existing. This implies that a department of justice still exists and The Department of Homeland security and Defense clearly still exist as well (since Fedra and The Military exist). So I think that the presidential cabinet is central command for Fedra. I think that Central command could exist in Denver Colorado as well. I do not remember exactly but I know that Denver in the game was mentioned to have a very large military base. This also correlated with Bills conspiracies of new world order since Denver is known to be a prominent city for that conspiracy. Lowkey think Bill may have been right since Fedra looks like it was extremely prepared for this crisis and wanted to put everyone in cities to easily control them under an iron fist basically new word order. I think the government in the last of us was corrupt from the start. However at the point of the 20 years timeline whatever centralization the Quarantine zones had is clearly gone, maybe there is some communication but not a lot.

Very plausible that the executive suspended congress via emergency powers, but eventually it also collapsed under the crisis. The only enduring legitimate authority would be the military, even if they only exist in pockets and with minimum contact with each other. The urgency of maintaining security and order (even with extreme cruelty) keeps them under constant threat from both restless civilians and the infected. As a result, they're stretched to their limits defending their zones and themselves. Their leaders aren't creative, only inspire fear and not trust, are probably corrupted by their petty power and reluctant to reach out to other zones/share it with other groups with other goals, uninterested in trade or flourishing economic activity etc. They run military slave states, with no prospect of reform. I can see why after 20 years, rebellion would cross your mind. My initial criticism of the the FEDRA idea was that surely people would realise the need for security and respect all measures to keep them safe. But with time you can see how self-serving, stifling and corrupt such an organisation could become. Rebellion wouldn't just be a short sighted act in a dangerous and ruined world; it's probably necessary for the development of more progressive conditions for the survivors to rebuild from. I love the detail that society basically has to rebuild from the bottom up, in colder rural locations with agriculture as the base and trade as the insurance against local setbacks/disadvantages. It's a really interesting comment that a military authority appears unable to foster such a development, but rather hinders it - consuming themselves in hellish urban slave states. What makes it possible is a collection of free, robust individuals, able to defend themselves and their families, who respect each other's rights and are all willing to contribute to the common good. If there's no trust/respect or genuine sense of duty understood between all levels of society, it falls apart.

What I don't get is, if the infection happened over a 4 day period how did the government figure out what caused it so quickly and how did so many people NOT get infected by the food?? And watching the show shouldn't there be literally billions of infected hunting down humans???
@sillyskater2
@sillyskater2 Жыл бұрын
Good question, with information from the games and show we know that the contaminated food was only select products, so not everyone that ate pancakes on Friday morning had a brand that used suppliers with the contaminated flour. So just from food let’s say it would be 20% of the world population that got infected from food contamination. As we approached evening of Friday into early morning Saturday those infected started biting others BUT that doesn’t mean they make a new infected, because there are chances that they just killed the person and so that can’t make a new infected host. We don’t know how many of the world leaders were infected/died in the first four days but it seems that most governments had contact with each other and information was collected and collaborated with. So in those four days some response plans were made and implemented to combat the spread but ultimately failed. So most of the world was infected, those who weren’t, were tested and placed in a QZ, others were killed because of space. There were bombings in major cities without QZs to kill as many as they could without using close combat with humans. The CBI scanners were probably developed and built in the early years of the outbreak but probably not with any government oversight that we would know today, this was probably FEDRA central leaders. It’s unknown if other countries outside of the United States, have these or if communications broke down before they were made. You ask why there aren’t more infected than humans, there seems to be, BUT those who are infected could die on there own, be trapped, or have been killed through out the twenty years by multiple QZs, also traveling convoys would journey out and kill infected on their path.

@@KeyIssues apparently naughty dog didn’t wanna do a whole part where we see Joel doing all the bad shit because they didn’t want us 2 see him in a bad light. He was very bad person after Sarah died. He went downhill, but he found someone he could protect & change for. But it meant sacrificing others in order 2 save Ellie 🥺

There are so many lazily developed concepts in this "show" (its just an adapted video game).... but the worst is Ellie. She grew up in the QZ, confined to bleakness and finding out what she could. Yet she chirps about smartly, sassily and socially like a well-adapted freshman from Dalton (private school in NYC). Where did she learn all the lingo, the sass, the culture? Every kid should be locked up in a QZ....

Cause Kids are sassy no matter the place and for the culture there are old world stuff still intact yk and its an act she put on over how scared she actually is in part 2 she is not sassy but dead serious and always quite

Oh the irony and LOL's of saying how good the gumbiment was, and showing George W Bush. Be the same today I guess if you stated how fine things are now, and showed Biden, or Trump, or Clinton, or Santos........

Nice video but all the sarcastic quips are stupid and unnecessary. By-product of Millennials and Gen Z, I suppose.
