If you have a friend that actually uses they/them pronouns, and you stop using pronouns to just use their name instead, it can often be read by the non-binary person (speaking from experience) that you don't actually accept their gender identity and it comes across like they don't mean enough to you for you to actually care or put any effort into the relationship (be it friendship or other). So, maybe actually put effort into perceiving the people you care about for who they are, rather than taking a shortcut to just "not have to deal with it." We get our non-binary identities dismissed enough as is without friends/loved ones dismissing it for their ease. Always ask your non-binary friends if they are okay with you just using their name instead of pronouns. Watch the way they respond too, don't accept a clearly exasperated or dejected "ok, that's fine" as permission. That means they don't have it in them to fight you about their identity or they're scared to. I say this to try to help you not cause further depression and dysphoria in any of your non-binary friends and family.

Because if you are imagining a future where people’s basic needs are met, they are free from surveillance or incarceration because of their class, race or gender expression, an end to the ecological crisis and crisis capitalism, end to imperialism and genocide. Getting pronouns correct is not that big of a deal because we have so much to do. Once you get your marriage, your home, your social status, you’re good to go. @timc754311 ай бұрын
In order to ID as anything, there must be feelings, interests, etc that you identify with or reject identifying with that are integral to that thing you ID (or fail to ID) as. Non-binary people will say: I identify as both man and woman to varying degrees. Or even neither. And I do so based on these feelings, interests, etc integral to men or to women. The problem is that this is regressive. There are no feelings, interests, etc integral to being a man or a woman. They are saying 'I don't identify as a man or a woman because THIS is how a man feels and THIS is how a woman feels and I feel both or neither'. Men and women don't categorically feel any certain way or have any certain interests. By identifying as NB, they implicitly say that 'yes, men and women do because otherwise I COULD identify as a man or woman'. NB implicitly reinforces regressive, dated stereotypes of manhood and womanhood. A man is a male human with any feelings. Not any human with man-feelings (whatever that means). Likewise with women. No feeling or interest can make one less of a man or woman. All humans feel a mixture of feelings, interests, etc that may be associated with men or women, so the concept of NB is trivial. And regressive. A more expansive view of what it means to be a man or woman within their respective sexes is what should be being fostered. We were succeeding with that for decades until recently.
@whatevs17007 ай бұрын
Well said… fully agree. The activists can’t see their hypocrisy in applying stereotypes when determining their so called status. You are correct. Nonbinary/gender identity ideology is regressive because it is based on sex roles and stereotypes. It reinforces the idea that masculine stereotypes are the descriptor for Man and feminine stereotypes are the descriptor for Woman. "I'm neither a Man or a Woman because I don't fit in either box completely". This is a unscientific regressive belief system. This is the complete opposite of what Gay Activism fought against, getting rid of sex roles.

it's not regressive to recognise the world we live in has been structured along gendered lines for thousands of years. no non-binary person is saying men behave one way and women behave another, they're observing what is expected of men and women in the real world and rejecting those expectations: not enforcing them on anybody else

It was common hundred of years ago to not dress kids based on gender until they were like 8- 12 because that was their start into manhood or womanhood. That’s why there are both boys and girls in dresses and fem clothing in colorful hues back then. Also for money saving methods to reuse the same clothes & cleaning because toddlers get dirty easily and grow so fast. Parents started dressing their babies in gendered clothing because it was TRENDY around the Edwardian Era. Separation of genders became more heightened when Western countries started using pink and blue to associate with genders. That was also due to TRENDS brought by Dutch and rich ppl who can afford luxuries for their kids clothing. 1920s & 30s added to that when businesses wanted to SELL clothes. Barbie in the 70s solidify pink and girliness. This was also around the time macho masculinity and hyper femininity was on a rise partly to do with anti hippie/ feminist movements and hate towards gays & lesbians who disrupted gender roles. Rockstars such as David Bowie, Boy George, and Annie Lenox adopted androgynous looks to dispel gender & sexual identities. When we can identify a baby’s gender before birth in the 90s, gender reveal parties became TRENDY. So playing with gender & sexuality is sort of new yet not new. If gay ppl are fixated on gender identity then based on social standards, gay men should be fucking women and we should be denouncing David Bowie for popularizing non binary.

Being non binary isn't that someone *doesn't fit* into a category. We all fit into different categories according to other people. Therefore, "he doesn't look non binary *to me*" is a very valid point. Gender is a social construct, therefore, it follows the rules a society agrees upon. No one can force their pronoun on the society. We can only respect one's pronoun and use it when communicating with them. That all we can do.

@bittercharmer159111 ай бұрын
I also disagree with your second point, because being non binary has nothing to do with appearance
@afafsobakin11 ай бұрын
I think that word "being" in your statement lacks any context. People being tall and people being sad. Those two completely different concepts. Being (non) binary is not a physical thing or other thing that hard to change. I can be very binary today and out of binary tomorrow. I can change it as easy I can change my appearance. Others cannot. But other people have no literally not a single obligation to either guess my state today or respect my wishes. They will define me same as the "bad" guy in the video did, according to their preferences. Especially if I'm specifically accenting certain gender stereotypical things like beard or hight heels. And no one is here to blame them. Because, no one owes anything to anyone. And I'm not giving a flying duck how _others_ define me. I'm defined by myself firstly. There are too many narcissists that want to impose their rules and views on others. And this is problem, not gender identification.

Gender identity is not a form of entertainment, e.g., Game of Thrones. I don’t profess to know or understand much about it but I know I don’t have to be a “fan” to respect people’s rights to personhood.
@afafsobakin11 ай бұрын
Personhood is the right. A person living in a society has rights AND responsibilities. So, yes, gender is not a game. I can feel non binary today, them tomorrow, he yesterday, dj next week. But I'm living in a society where my feelings and identity collide with other people. In a nutshell, I respect people by being a decent part of the society and not imposing my personal feelings today for others to cope with. That is called mutual respect.

I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about. If you are taking about sex, that is mostly true. There are cases when genetics gets borderline, but those are extremely rare. I believe the video is about gender - social construct of roles based on sex. If you are taking about gender then you are obviously wrong. No one has to pick up a gender. People do it to define something. That's all. If a person doesn't want to define something they do not have to do it. Simple as that. I only met three non binary people. Two of them were pretty chill but the third one almost made me climb over the counter like the desk worker that wanted to kill Sheldon Cooper at the dmv in the Big Bang theory tv show.😤😤😤😤 Pronouns don’t bother me. Mainly because I have a few trans friends. I believe it’s a way for me to respect them in the gender they identify with after transition. I’m absolutely fine with it. It hasn’t been too crazy. However, I believe that when it comes non binary or those who believe they are outside of the male vs female gender spectrum or however it’s described, depending on how they identify or what have you, there’s a level to where now it’s starts to sound like they’re making it up. Even some of my gay friends began to question it. Even I started to hear about new identities. One example is Demi boy or Demi girl. The scary part is that I began to see the frustration that lead a few gays to almost having similar views with right winger but not for the same reasons. As right winger “aren’t usually very educated” in this area. I began to see the frustration and dislike of Non binary. Mind you this is only my observation and some reading done into it.
