WHERE TO FIND VINTAGE | ANTIQUE MALL VS THRIFT SHOP | RESELLING
Cross-state travel equals cross-state antique and vintage hunting! We pick a St. Louis Goodwill and a Kansas City antique mall as we seek more treasures to cram into our already quite full van. We're headed to an antique show out west, and we know the fresh stuff always sells first!
Jeffrey ‪@RealNiftyVintage‬ warned us, but we had to see a Goodwill in his area for ourselves! An auspicious beginning with rows of boxes being unpacked out back belied the fact that this very clean, large and busy store was picked clean of anything older than the afghan the woman who worked there found. With no jewelry counter and no old stuff, we make quick work of this thrift store-and decide to head on for where we know we'll strike reseller gold!
That place is across the state, the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall where hundreds of dealers occupy a giant building and there's more to see than time will allow! The haul of vintage goods grows as we comb this vast honey hole, starting with a 1964 cigarette ad card and ending with two fabulous Shawnee antelope vases!
Brass Armadillo is the largest chain of antique malls in the country, and their KC area one is a steady flow of interesting and often buyable items, from $1 elegant glass to a Frankart elephant! Hood ornaments, boudoir items and a haul that includes a Hanova Ware candleholder (thanks to being tall!) round out a fun and interesting contrast between two types of venues in Missouri's two biggest cities.

I am glad I am not the ONLY person who feels this way. I have vestibular migraines which are migraines caused by loud noise so I am very sensitive to any/all of that & people never consider what others health problems r. Its reflective of where this world is coming to- just tuning out everyone else.

@@susanleslie4809as someone with PTSD, loud music also affects me. I tend to steer clear of places where there is constant noise...so loud stores just make me get what I need and get out as fast as possible, or just avoid the place altogether. Not very good business sense in my mind 😕

I really like the fact you try and find unblemished items. I watch a couple of other people who thrift and flip, and will pick up items with nicks, chips and dings. I don't want to buy items like that from resellers. I do realize there are exceptions at times.

I live in Missouri now, and have aunts & uncles who love antique malls & have hit them all over the country. My parents were not antiquers, so if we were charged with entertaining visiting family, they would rely upon my knowledge of where such places were. Now most of these people have died, so I try to enjoy my memories of "the hunt" and go by myself.

Great finds, George & thank you so much for explaining the whys & whynots! That litebrite swag lamp is something i have that is very cherished! My grandfather, who retired from the oil rigs in Alaska & moved to Las Vegas in the early 80s, was looking for a hobby & while @ Walmart happened in the garden dept & saw a tear off paper for a diy swag lamp, so tried his had @ it & made a few for friends & family. Everyone, it seemed got one, except me. Fast foward 25 yrs & i inherit my dad's house after his death & while rummaging in the attic, low & behold, there was a litebrite swag lamp! I cherish it & take it camping w/ us (which we're currently doing) & get so many compliments!

I played with a Lite Brite in the 70s, as a kid. I wish I still had it because as an adult I could use it to display a fun message in my house or window. I do not understand the difference between a regular Lite Brite and the "swag" version you speak of.

My Ill Will store has sent every scrap of costume jewelry to on-line auction since the Pandemic started. They do get old stuff, but usually things with a dead market. Anything good does to on line overpriced (for resellers and the people they're allegedly trying to help) auction and we locals get the junk. I go in because every so often an accident gets through. OTOH sometimes it gets through because it's damaged. (chips and cracks and why bother) I had one of those trash-tastic lamps in my basement. No idea if it's still there.
