i just saw all 3 videos and i noticed that in all of them, they look completely different from when they walked in to the end of the video. as they were giving them a makeover, they covered up all of their "flaws" or what society considered their flaws. idk, maybe i'm looking into this wrong but i'm sure that there is a deeper meaning to all 3 videos.

This is how I read the videos, too, particularly the one with the character who starts off wearing a wig. I read these videos as an allegory for how the music industry pushed Fancy to soften or cover his identity in order to be "acceptable" for mainstream audiences. I formed that opinion before I realized that this was his debut single, though; now I think that it just stands as a bit of prescient irony. Edit: and before I realized that this was his debut single, I also interpreted the other person in the song (to whom the singer is saying goodbye) to be the music industry with all of their expectations for what he should be like. My reading of the song's lyrics is below, even though obviously it doesn't make sense if it was his *first* song rather than his *last* recording. You were my first love / You were my only one (the label he signed with, his excitement at breaking into the industry and the loyalty he felt -- echoed by signing the contract in the video) Once we were like bottle rockets / Now I know I have to stop it (i.e., stop making music within a mainstream context; simultaneously, having to stop expressing himself so freely -- the character being seated in the makeup chair and having the first layer of differentness peeled away) Please believe this isn't easy / I just need to say goodbye (the pain in the character's face as they begin to be molded - it's not easy to set down those markers of self-expression) You've got a new friend, you like to play pretend / I'm just keeping my cool (i.e., the next new star; the character holding their tongue as the manager talks to the producer, setting their fate) Turn on that smoke machine / Magic and make-believe (the theatrics of the music industry, particularly the viral campaign that obscured his identity until the mainstream was already hooked -- the set-pieces traipsing past, taking priority and right-of-way and blocking the artist's confident walk) She'll never know you like I do (other artists haven't been put under quite the same pressure to conform and so might not understand the full extent of their underhandedness) Once we were a fire burnin' / Now you're just a lesson I'm learnin' (He used to be really enthusiastic, but now he sees the mistake he made in signing that contract -- learning the realities of the industry) I know I can find somebody / You won't ever find nobody else like me (a protest against how they stripped away his individuality and identity to fit him into a mold and how what makes him valuable and appealing is exactly what they wanted to pare away -- the costume person measuring the character and dressing them up in "correct" clothes) I just need to say goodbye / goodbye / losing my mind / goodbye (both saying goodbye to his identity -- the ache of performing as he is expected to -- but also saying goodbye to the industry's trickery) And then the fade-out at the end, with the character left standing alone and empty as the camera moves out past the abandoned set-pieces, the little bit of light coming in through the window representing the tiniest sliver of hope for authenticity.

you're not wrong. these videos were released before he revealed who he was or what he looked like. Like saying the looks don't make the music the the artist within themself does. and the song was literally made when his partner changed and went straight.

I just wanted to say this even though I know fancy will never read my comment: I have had a hard time fitting in at my school from 1st grade to now (6th grade) no one ever talked to me, one girl said I should die, and sometimes I would cry for hours. But when I heard both of your songs, they gave me a certain sense of hope. I stood up to that bully. They haven't talked to me since. Thank you so much for being that support when I felt no one was giving me it.

I think this is just a depiction on how artists may be 'manufactured' to look a certain way (removal of tattoos, almost a JB lookalike) to the point that it drains away their true selves. You could see that after this dude performed, it was cut into an empty space, depicting how these handlers couldn't care less about the artist since they alr got what they wanted from him. Dope video dude. Another similar music video of an almost similar theme is Foster the people's 'Houdini'. Do check it out y'all :)

I think the best part of this song and the music videos is that anyone can relate to them. We’re all under pressure to fit a mold that society deems acceptable and in the end become someone we’re not...our perfect flaws and quirks make us unique and that is what makes people beautiful

I just noticed that in each version, they turn every "Fancy" into someone else. Like this emo boy into justin bieber-ish teen idol; the one with tomboy black girl, they turned her into more girly/diva look; and the cross-dresser is turned into a cowboy/country singer-like. It's kind of deep and probably portrays how music industry works. I like it.

Jake Hagood is a good looking guy so it really hurts me by how shallow humanity is. If he would have showed him singing people would have judged him by his weight and looks and basically his appearance. It's just sad that before he hid himself he wasn't anywhere. All of these people commenting that he is just a nobody, screw you all! He has an amazing voice. You are all shallow and judge mental people who know nothing about real music. It should never be about their appearance. It should be bared off of their music abilities. All of you guys need to rethink what you are doing with your lives because if you are seriously wasting your time insulting an incredibly talented musician just because they don't look like Justin Bieber or Adam Lavigne then you obviously have some stuff to work out. I know you guys can't sing better than him so just shut up and sit down and enjoy the song or go do something you enjoy besides hating on beautiful human beings!

Han That's not why he hid himself. He released three videos that were effectively identical except for the person in it to create an air of mystery around himself - which is very smart for many new artists. iamamiwhoami went from no-one to millions of views since she hid her face. Daft Punk, Deadmou5 (early/mid-career) It's not new and NOT because of body image stuff.

this song means so so much to me bcs I ugly cried in my truck to this song on repeat on my way home from telling someone I had feelings for him but my boss came between us & I wasn't able to tell him & we weren't ever scheduled together (like not even 1 day) so I was really upset bout it & this song made me feel so much better & I felt empowered. this was over 2 yrs ago & this song still reminds me of him & I constantly find myself thinkin bout what him & what could'v'e been between us
