I’m 75 years old and I saw Janis in concert and to this day I still get chills listening to her sing. There was and I don’t think there will ever be another singer like Janis..Same with Elvis.

That's Janis' Kozmic Blues Band backing her up. Besides Janis on vocals the original band lineup was: Sam Andrew (lead guitar a holdover from her first band, Big Brother and the Holding Company), Terry Clements (tenor sax) Richard Kermode (organ), Roy Markowitz (drums), Terry Hensley (trumpet), and Keith Cherry (bass). Through the course of 1969, this lineup evolved several times.

The horns on "As good as you've been" on the same lp is phenomenal on both horns and vocals. Kozmic Blues Band was an incredible lineup ❤

I was a teenager in the 60’s and Janis Joplin has always been my favorite. We were all so devastated when she died 😢 Thanks for keeping her music alive and turning the youngsters onto great music. Love your videos darlin’ ☮️❤️👵🏼

This was the Kozmic Blues Band, Sam Andrew - guitar. There were two different bassists in this band I am not sure which one is playing here, Brad Campbell or Keith Cherry - bass, backing vocals. Cornelius Flowers - baritone saxophone, backing vocals. Terry Clements - tenor saxophone. There were two different trumpet players in this band I am not sure which one is playing here, Luis Gasca or Terry Hensley - trumpet. There were two different keyboardists in this band I am not sure which one is playing here, Richard Kermode or Gabriel Mekler - keyboards. There were three different drummers I am not sure which one is playing here, Maury Baker, Lonnie Castille, or Roy Markowitz - drums.

The one artist who just breaks me. I've loved Janis for fifty plus years. (You're right. The kids used to disappear when Janis was on the turntable! They knew it wasn't just regular chores, it was hauling the sofa and chairs out into the sun to air out and floors stripped and scrubbed.. they used to freak out!)

I'm a huge JJ fan. No one sings like JJ but she was not known as a great song writer. The vast majority of the songs that made her famous were written by others and often already recorded by others. Her versions are the ones that stand the test of time.

She wrote many beautiful things but even Janis knew where she was from. She showcased music and artists that influenced her who didn't have a platform before the term influencer was a thing. She was also well aware of her space as a white woman. Idk when it became pasé to acknowledge these kinds of things.

Just now finding out you've checked out Janis. I have to tell you about "Summertime" now that you've heard it. I remember as a kid watching on television a musical called "Porgy and Bess". It had an all Black cast and this song was in it. It tore the heart out of me at the age of 7 and Janis's version still does. It's not blues as much as pure soul. The rumor back then was that she loved Jimi Hendrix and it wasn't mutual. She OD'd about two weeks after he died. We always wondered.

Poor chick didn't even make it to 30...But if she'd lived, with this new band you hear her with on this song, she would've been dominant in the 70's and perhaps beyond that for sure.

It takes me to a time I never existed in. I must admit, I'm probably being generous with 'mental embellishments' as to what my physical experience would be like at that time. However I draw alot from this song. I picked up on this album in 1994; Years after it's inception. I know she worked with Clive Davis. He turns out alot of winners. S

Absolutely wonderful! You might like to try the original version of this song from the late 50's. A classic in it's own right by The Chantels with lead singer 15 year old Arlene Smith. Not Joplin soulful blues style, but a great doo wop song.
