17:27 As I Catholic, I'd like to counter that argument. In his final moments, he has a confession with his friend (who's also a priest) in which his sins are repented. Catholicism puts a heavy emphasis on the forgiveness of sins, and giving a confession to a priest is considered the most absolute way to be absolved. Ignoring the events of Exorcist 3, this would surely get him into Heaven under the principles of Catholic doctrine, although he would certainly go to purgatory first (contradictory to the mainstream concept of purgatory as a place of limbo, the actual early Christian/Catholic concept is a place where you're cleansed of menial sins before you enter Heaven).

That Regan was abused is absolutely presented as fact in the film. Her language and behavior is hyper s*xual, especially when any man tries to approach her. The demon deliberately speaks in the director’s voice. What on earth was he doing in a young girl’s bedroom? Even her mother is anxious when she finds our she’s been left alone with him. Because Merrin defeated Pazuzu by exorcising him before in The Exorcist II (The Heretic) remember when Merrin shouts at the Demon "I cast you OUT uncleaned spirit!!!" I thought that was awesome because he was confident because he already defeated Pazuzu.

Exactly, he sacrificed himself, that’s not the same as suicide. He’s a martyr and some of them made it to holiness.
@a-sheepof-christ90275 ай бұрын
Christians are saved by faith alone(romans10:9). Martyrdom does not save and is a work that is credited with rewards (Romans 4:4-5). What saves is the faith and that ALONE (john 3:16). Damien was saved already but won against Pazuzu because in his final act he both proved men to be noble and then perished, taking away any chance for revenge. Pazuzu(Satan) was left having been proven wrong with out any recourse.

But in the end, Pazuzu didn't succeed. The demon seeks to make people lose hope in any meaningful good existing in this cruel world, and his to goal achieve this was to possess Karras and make a priest, someone who's supposed to be a servant of God, do something truly awful as the ultimate symbol of evil triumphing over good (he knew that Karras' crisis of faith made him vulnerable). He succeeded in possessing Karras, and tried to use him to kill Reagan (killing a child being one of the most evil acts a person can do) but Karras resisted due to having regained some of his faith and sacrificed himself to save Reagan.
@twistedelegance_2 ай бұрын
@@fisher3317He did tho. Pazuzu says the goal is to bring Karras and him together. That is what happens. And as we find out later in the film Exorcist 3, Karras was stuck with Pazuzu for a decade watching his own hands do horrible things. Goal definitely reached.

I liked Stephen King's description of evil in his short story 'If it Bleeds', discussing whether there is any difference between inside and outside evil. The Jerome character imagines it as "a big bird, all flowsy and frosty gray, flying here, there and everywhere" until it finds a head to roost in for a while. And once the great evil has occurred, off it flies again, leaving us to wrestle with the why and how of it all. If we strip away the superstition, the religious trappings, that seems an apt analogy for what we really mean when we talk of demons and possession.

They learn about you, what your tempations are and your fears to use them against you to make human beings sin. 😮 They are old beings, but they no long have divine connection to God that could help give them instant knowledge and understanding of things, they lost that in the Fall.
