Auston Matthews now has 350 goals in 535 career games, that's 26 more than Alex Ovechkin scored over his first 535 games. Who is the better goal scorer at their peak? Craig Button and Kevin Weekes join Gino Reda to discuss.

“More of a game changer” ? Are you sure? Matthews is breaking offensive records that haven’t been touched in DECADES, and he’s doing that while being a top selke candidate, top lady bing candidate, most takeaways in the league AND best takeaway:giveaway ratio, highest blocked shots for forwards, 56% on faceoffs. They're both amazing. Matthews' wrist shot is one of a kind and from the offensive blue line in I think only McDavid and MacKinnon are more dangerous right now. He plays centre while Ovechkin plays wing, which makes him more valuable that way because he covers more of the ice and takes on tougher defensive assignments. But I actually think Ovechkin in his prime was better. I think because we associate Ovechkin so much with his shot, a lot of people forget how awesome he was as a skater during his prime, and how many of his goals were created through his speed. The best thing I can compare him to is MacKinnon, except maybe even a little faster and more explosive. Ovechkin during his prime was a great skater and an incredible goal scorer -- 65 goals in 2007-08 was one of the best era-adjusted goal scoring seasons ever. But he was also among the league leaders in hits in his prime, and yet he missed so few games despite playing that style. I watch Matthews play a lot because I watch Leafs games regularly. When the Leafs have the puck in the offensive zone and Matthews is on the ice, he is very adept at getting open and finding ways to get chances. But what leaves me wanting with Matthews is that he's a big guy and a good skater, but he's injury prone, and he doesn't use that size as much as I think he could or should to be more effective. He could also be a lot more effective in the defensive and neutral zones. Ovechkin was never an impact defensive player, but what made Ovechkin so dangerous in his prime was that he had that size and explosiveness and used it regularly in transition. When I see Matthews get the puck in the neutral zone, I think the opponent should be really concerned. But Ovechkin coming through the neutral zone in transition with the puck was a force to be reckoned with. Both of them can score anywhere in the offensive zone. But if I need a player who creates more impact all over the ice, particularly in the neutral zone, I'm taking Ovechkin.

@rohm7786 Goals per game is the start of a conversation, not the end of it. There's so much more that goes into analyzing a player's effectiveness, even just as a goal scorer. The most obvious of these factors is era. Ovechkin's prime was in an era where it was more difficult to score. As context, there were 5.44 goals per game in 2007-08, his best year, while there was 6.3 goals per game last year, and 5.14 in 2003-04, the lowest of the Dead Puck Era. That difference may not sound like a lot, but if you take nearly a full goal difference and extrapolate over around 1400 NHL games in a year, that's 1400 more goals scored by teams over the course of a season, or about 45 more per team per year. That's like the equivalent of adding a star forward to your team and not sacrificing any other production. Ovechkin's numbers relative to Matthews are influenced by the fact that his prime was played in a more challenging era to score. It was quite a lot more physical. Rules about hitting to head were not even on the books yet. There were still a lot of teams with dedicated enforcers. The game overall was not as fast and involved a lot tighter checking. Yet, his speed and shot stood out even in this era. What would Ovechkin's prime be like if it was today? Mathematically I think he probably gets at least another 5-10 goals than he otherwise would, and has production not dissimilar to what Matthews is doing right now, but he'd be doing it on a weaker Capitals team and with skills Matthews doesn't have as much of. (The Leafs are perennial playoff contenders with four of the best 25 or so offensive players in the league. The Capitals in 2007-08 were the only team to qualify for the playoffs in a weak Southeast Division, and Ovechkin had 43 more points than the second highest player on his team.)

Hell we have 2 players that are going to have 100+ assists this season and possibly 6 players with 50+ goals. That has nothing to do with it being easier to score it has everything to do with the skill set of the players. Matthews also just hit 68 goals and will more than likely hit 70 goals this season. Ovechkins goal scoring has relied on the powerplay a lot more than Matthews (36% of his goals vs 26% for Matthews) and his first few years were played at a time when there were a lot more powerplay opportunities. Goals per game have increased a bit recently which favours Matthews at the same age but Ovi being more reliant on the PP goes against your point considering he was at his best when stationery on the PP rather than at top speeds. Additionally, if the league was slower back then, that should actually favour a faster player like Ovi vs now
@larryking2698
@larryking2698 3 ай бұрын
@ when i mean the game is faster now a days, i mean that theres more chances in transition due to the amount of great skaters there are today. it makes it easier to get goals of deflections, rebounds, and easier goals where as Ovi was just sniping on everyone back then. Again, theres a reason scoring is up today. If you just use the eye test alone, Ovi was a more dynamic scorer than matthews.

@@larryking2698 I do agree Ovechkin would probably score a bit more in transition today vs back then but his bread and butter was still when he was stationary on the PP which I believe would drop his scoring with the fewer PPs in today's game. Overall I think his goal totals would be similar in either era. I disagree with Ovi being more dynamic as a scorer, Matthews scores consistently in every which way from everywhere on the ice. I don't know how anyone can be any more dynamic scoring wise, it's what makes him so hard to stop. The hardest part of catching Ovi will be the longevity which is crazy in today's NHL.

Ovechkin is close to becoming the highest goal scorer in NHL history. He’s done that through mutant level consistency and longevity. There are only 6 players in NHL history to ever score 75 goals in a season. Gretzky, Lemieux, Hull, Mogilny, Esposito and Selanne. If Austin can continue his pace he will make 7. That said if we’re talking peak only, then I’d have to give it to Auston but only if he keeps up the pace.

But Ovechkin seems like he literally wills the puck into the net sometimes, and is a PP phenom. I think I'll give the edge to Ovechkin though because of his playoff scoring when it matter most, BUT it's closer than you think there. Ovechkin in 0.49 g/pg in the playoffs and Matthews is 0.44 g/pg and he can quickly improve that if, and its a big if, him and the Leafs go on a couple deep runs.
