A bit much to blame Hitler for all the deaths of WW2 when not all of it are by his country. He's a villain to be sure, but adding the tolls of other nations onto him is blame shifting.
@Nikolapoleon7 ай бұрын
True, but, at the end of the day it's kind of impossible to reliably pin statistically significant amounts of death or suffering on any leader, since the ways in which we define culpability is so subjective... so, I'm okay with it. For instance, it's generally accepted that sixty million wrongful/preventable deaths occurred in China under Mao, but does that really mean Mao killed sixty million people? How many were killed on his orders, how many died as a direct result of his policies, and how many died as a result of the ensuing "snowball effect?" [That is, famine caused by supply chain breakdown as a result of deaths that had already occurred, or even outside sanctions?] Is Mao directly to blame for all of those deaths? I would argue, if you answer yes, then you likewise have to blame Hitler for all the deaths of WWII, since the world war is the result of a "snowball effect" caused by his actions. Conversely, if you answered no, then the alleged death count of dozens of twentieth century tyrants goes down to just a small fraction of what is usually attribute to them.

Also, to show how Pol Pot was more systematic at genocide, there were 1.3 million prisoners at Auschwitz and 1.1 million were killed before the Soviets liberated it. When S-21 was set up, around 18,145 were detained there, and 18,133 were killed, the Vietnamese liberated the camp and freed 12. You're statistically more likely to survive Auschwitz (though, barely) than S-21. And we're talking about one of the largest concentration camp Nazi Germany has built versus a converted school. The only difference is that the Nazis had to work with a larger target population (European Jews, Roma, POWs, etc.) while the Khmer Rouge only had the around 8 million in their borders.

My grandmother always shared stories with me and my brother about the 1970s, a time when life was incredibly tough. She had to take care of eight children, my aunts and uncles, during a period of immense hardship. Remarkably, they all survived. Tragically, my grandfather did not. Before the rise of Pol Pot's regime, he worked for the Ministry of Agriculture. When someone discovered his occupation, he was executed (Pol Pot's soldiers . kill anyone who had connections with the old government). This loss absolutely devasted my grandmother. She still cried when she brought him up 45 years later. The most haunting part of her story wasn't just his death alone. In their darkest moments, my grandparents considered ending their own lives, along with their children's, with poison to escape the horrors. It's unimaginable how desperate their situation must have been for such thoughts to enter their minds. Don't know who'll read this. How 80 million? Where the numbers came from? Ww2 in total has an estimated 50 million casualties, soviets slaughtered many of their own and civilians in foreign countries. In death toll Hitler doesn't even comes close to Stalin or Mao.

This is such a good representation of how the US teaches history domestically. Because, of course, the US caused the regional conditions that allowed this to happen and it was the US giving up on its war in Vietnam that enabled the government that actually ended the kamere rouge.

You gotta remember to that a lot of evil people were actually just incredibly mentally ill. This doesn’t excuse their actions, but it does mean that they weren’t “evil”. Their actions were evil, their character was rotten, but they themselves were just sick. The most evil person to ever exist has to be someone who was truly evil, without a shadow of a doubt, beyond their actions and character. They are sane and cognizant, and healthy in mind, and simply an evil person.

I'd argue it was probably Joseph Stalin I mean if your ultimate evil is killing your own people two years after he made the Soviet Union into a dictatorship he ordered the attempted genocide of the ukrainians in 1932 (they were part of the union at the time) he also did the same thing to Kazakhstan which again was part of the union

Actually the most deaths caused by anyone isn’t Hitler to quote the Washington post “But both Hitler and Stalin were outdone by Mao Zedong. From 1958 to 1962, his Great Leap Forward policy led to the deaths of up to 45 million people - easily making it the biggest episode of mass murder ever recorded.”

Man we have people like nero in history.. Even ignoring the fact that he was completly insane, he murdured himself both his wives, kill his unborn child in the process, roamed around with the head of his first wife to be able to gloat about it, kidnapped, castrated and married a man because he looked like his second wife, he laughed and partied while Rome was ablazed and killed his mother, forced people to label him as his heir then force them to kill themselves and shit like that He killed less people but he was way pore vicious and violent in his way of doing things, not to mention he didn't have an agenda, he did all that because he just felt like it

to me, the definition of evil is doing something bad without a reason. while hitler did have a stupid reason to "create the perfect race" or whatever, it sounded right in his mind and psychology n shit. he had a reason to do it. a truly evil person is knowing that they are doing terrible things, and have no reason to do it
