Mages are one of the most versatile classes in all of warcraft. They utilize the arcane and can twist it into various forms. Obvious to anyone the titans are the strongest arcane users and are far above anyone else, but for this video I wanted to cover the mortal creatures and who the most powerful mage is.
Talking about the Eredar and Argus, the night elven empire and Queen Azshara and the progression of magical learning from highborne to high elves, humans and now to almost all other races. Looking at notable characters like Aegwynn, Medivh, Jaina Proudmoore, Khadgar and many others.
So who is the most powerful mage in warcraft?

Azshara was toying with us in the fight in the Eternal Palace. She was buying time to drain the power from the Heart of Azeroth to shatter the chains on N'Zoth's prison. She wasn't really focused on fighting us fully.

Jaina more powerful than Azshara? Jaina would have died if she hadn’t teleported out. Azshara not only wasn’t interested in fighting the players but she was focusing on the heart of Azeroth. Which the players were empowered by the heart and it made them very powerful That’s why they were able to defeat Azshara.

I think Azshara was naturally gifted to understand magic and that's why she was the best mage. It would take much more time for Jaina to examine and to start using the well of eternity as a primary source of magic because that's how humans approach magic in the first place. She would eventually die researching the well and just write books about it.

I agree, I think Azshara was and is the most powerful mage ever. Before she was empowered by N'Zoth she was far more powerful than Mannoroth, and he believed the only spell casters that could have rivaled her was Archimonde and Kil'jaeden.

@@Mystra Aegwynn is powerful and I am not sure what she used to augment her powers like the others did. Medivh is a bit of a cheater since he was half Sargeras so he would stomp all of them easy if he wanted to. With Aegwynn I omitted because she got her powers from others and not necessarily from an artifact that I can recall.

@@vindicatornessa5389 Teleportation is different from other magic, how many times you can teleport isn't a metric for power. Also quality over quantity, it's a lot more impressive to open up portals to different timelines than just another place in Azeroth in real time. Also Medivh admits to Khadgar's power.

Or do you mean because he was influenced by Sargeras he wasn't being honest? If anything, that means it's more impressive as Sargeras admits Khadgar power then, not just Medivh. That's even better. Either way, it's a plus for Khadgar. Furthermore, just because you are drawing on another power or using a tool. You still have that power, so it doesn't make a character weaker and therefor is irrelevant. Otherwise Queen Azshara wouldn't count. It's okay to like Jaina but Khadgar is just the stronger mage. He just isn't a crazy hot head like Jaina, he doesn't need to flaunt his power. Khadgar isn't even the only stronger mage stronger than Jaina either, we got Aegwynn, Medivh, Alodi, Elisande, Azshara, etc. I mean she's pretty overrated tbh both as a character and in power. That's just another flaw of Blizzard, push characters who used to be great way too much and in a wrong direction. And that's how we got the current obnoxious Jaina and Sylvanas. Those characters are just the tip of the icebeard of bad writing as well. (talking about recently, last couple of years)

Where she wasn't even top 3 and Khadgar was above her. She was the leader, but he was boosted from Kirin Tor not just Jaina. Also we don't know how much power he needed from them or how much was just from him. So to me that's an argument with too much speculation involved. But still, he was the one who cast the spell. This video is a huge yikes. As one of the people responsible for writing much of the wowpedia articles for Azshara and Jaina, I find this to be a huge misinterpretation. How can you think Jaina is on the same level as Azshara when Jaina herself called Azshara the most powerful mage in Azeroth’s History. Also the fact it took Jaina, Lorthemar, Shandris, and Thalyssra plus the combined forces of the horde and alliance to fight her while her actual goals were to just drain our heart of Azeroth, not to kill us. Jaina even questioned why she didn’t kill us all immediately as we arrived. These are the reasons we could actually fight her.

Well... you cannot consider azshara a mage anymore really in recent events... it's like if you considered Garosh a warrior in the siege of Orgrimmar when he taped into the power of the heart of Y'shaarj. Also back in the days the well of eternity was a big reason why Azshara was so strong and it is mentioned in this video that Azshara back in the days would be the most powerful mage but no one can really know what Jaina's powers would be like if she had access to the same resources as Azshara. Also while true that Jaina said that Azshara was the most powerful mage in Azeroth's History, it doesn't mean that it is the case, Jaina is not going to go out of her way to rank herself against Azshara if the conditions were right, she is not that much avid for power compared to Azshara so i wouldn't be surprised if by default Jaina would not even consider herself to be capable of being stronger than Azshara who was like a mage LEGEND. (a bit like Netero in HxH would say that Pitou is stronger even though we actually know he's being humble, for people who know this anime.)

I think this video is just hidden appreciation post to Jaina. If you discredit Azshara for having Well of Eternity, you have to mention that Jaina needed Focusing Iris to destroy Orgrimmar. Also, Azshara fought against Jaina, Thalyssra and Champion of Azeroth at once, while trying to free an old god.

the guardians were not just a combination of random mages noo, they also had the powers of the previous guardian via atiesh, which is the second strongest mage staff there ever was ( other than aluneth ) guldan bowed before medivh WITHOUT knowing sargeras was there, DW was scared of medivh, and he also had secrets not even the kirin tor knew ( they sent kahdgar to him to learn these secrets .) he was the only BEING to ever , lorewise, defeat a blue dragon by magic , because they are practically immune to it. ( outside gameplay .) he appeared weaker because he kept fighting sargeras over control, and resisted him whenever sargeras wanted to do something bad such as killing the dragon, or hurting his mother. to really show you how strong he is, the avatar of sargeras is a bit weaker than ragnaros, and ragnaros himself required two of the strongest titan keepers to push him back ( and they only won because they were MADE to resist fire ). jaina took the power from lei'shen, who in turn, took it out of a depressed and weak titan keeper. that is VERY much less than what a guardian has dealt with. azhara, medivh, and agywen are all close to power, while literally everyone else is tiers below. another example. when medivh was surrounded by lothar and the others, he began to transform to sargeras HIMSELF. it didnt say ANYWHERE that it was the avatar. MEDIVH WAS FREAKING SUMMONING SARGERAS XD. i wont go into a debate if medivh is equal to the well of eternity but that is INSANE. medivh at the end of WC3 apparently, and do not cite me on this, went beyond the timeways and traveled the alternate realities, because it was shown in a novel that thrall met medivh while time travelling. meddivh knows time magic SOMEHOW too. he escaped death, his mother , at a horrible state, managed to ressurrect even though she only knows ARCANE not light magic. ( the only character to ever ressurrect that is not a light user ) he might come back in the shadowlands, but putting him as low as ( a combination of random mages ) and putting jaina highest is kinda a bad idea

@Anzu Wyliei is it really a problem tho? I noticed that with these discussions a lot of players would want to see some kind of anime power levels ... It's like in the story itself there are no "classes" ... if Khadgar picks up an axe and starts manually cutting someone down, his arms won't fall off his torso and he doesn't hear a faint voice saying "you must be a different class to use this attack" in his head. When it comes to "peers" comparing their power, asking whether Khadgar is more powerful than Jaina is a stupid question... If Jaina lands a single icicle on Khadgar and it cuts his head off, she wins. If Khadgar manages to set her head on fire with a fireball, he wins. There is a difference between a discussion on whether Azshara could really kill Mannoroth that easily, and a discussion on which hunter gets to his bow and arrow faster. Illidan is a demon hunter, but lorewise that is a title for him... it doesn't physically stop him from casting spells

Well measuring raw strength even with the well I will put my money on medhiv.For starters he is still around and who knows how terrifyingly strong.also his actions causes echoes something only a few of Azharas spells could.While Medhiv created some when he was having a party or watching a stage show unfold.Jaina is pathetic in this question.Even with the whole power of the focusing iris all she could do was summon a few sea elementals to serve her unwillingly.and trust me as impressive as a wave of elementals might seem subjecting elementals aren't that amazing of a feat compared to burning a dragon alive and making him your eternal slave in a few seconds. Aegewyn is a bet but she did loose to medhiv.even if it were her power .Medhiv is way better and jaina doesn't even hold a candle to him.And if we are taking jaina maybe consider some of the nightfallen who freaking manipulated time with a power source when compared to Jainas little tidal wave.

I keep hearing the “Jaina is powerful enough to destroy Orgrimmar by herself!” She isn’t. She could only do it by tapping into the focusing Iris, the same immensely powerful artifact that was used to destroy Theramor. By that logic, a random mage that once had possession of this artifact would sudden be considered just as powerful as her. Also, she doesn’t have it any longer.

I don't think just any mage could do it though, my opinion is that the source of magic is the most important part of how powerful a mage is but the ability of a mage determines his potential and how much of that source he can effectively utilize.

@@Doronsmovies Alright, but now that this source is gone, what does she have now? There was a quest in MoP, where she sent players to take power from Lei Shen's throne. There hasn't been any known result of that powerup (Lei Shen and Raden are both lightning wielders and Jaina just tosses ice about) and that's it. Look, I don't argue that Jaina is powerful. It's one of my personal gripes with WoW lore, but if official lore states that Jaina is up there, then I can only nod and write it down. But if she could still be able to drown Orgrimmar, she wouldn't have had any issues with Zandalari fleet. Instead she almost got a huge number of people killed relying on gnomish technology.

Do the mogu not count as mortals? I believe it was them who introduced the zandalari to arcane magic, and the zandalari became so proficient at it that *elves* had to steal enchantments from them.

Norgannon is the single most powerful Arcane magic user in all of Azeroth's universe. Aman'Thul would be second. Then you have beings who wield the Titan's power; we're talking Malygos, with Kalecgos coming in behind him. After that we have every single other blue dragon.. Ever.. Then we have the rest of the Titan Pantheon. Then we have the rest of the Dragon Aspects. Finally we get to the mortals. It's been stated by many characters many times, that Azshara is the most powerful mortal Mage, period. If you're strictly talking mortals, she's your girl. End of story. Next we have Archimonde. He stands above the Guardians, but below Azshara. After him, we have the Guardians or Tirisfal. Aegwynn being first, Medivh being second. Then it goes Kel'Thuzad (As a Lich, not a Human) Jaina Kael'Thas Khadgar Thalyssra Then every other Mage. I lump them all together because they don't matter. This includes Rhonin, Antonidas, Aethas Sunreaver, the player character, and any Red or Bronze drakes we see using Arcane magic. One honorable mention would have to go to Illidan. We was born with great power, and a great affinity for Arcane magic. He was a prodigy, and unfortunately his training was cut short and he chose to become a Demon Hunter. We can only speculate how far he could have gone if he had practiced his Arcane skills over those 10,000 years. I doubt he would be Azshara level, but he would definitely be above the Guardians of Tirisfal.

@Anzu Wyliei The Titans are the living embodiment of the living essence known as "The Arcane" just like the Void Lords are the living essence of the "Void" and the Naaru are the living essence of "The Light". (Although it's speculated that Elune is the embodiment of "The Light" and the Naaru are more akin to the old gods.) The Titans are pure arcane energy, and Norgannon is the spell weaver. He's the first being to manipulate the energy of "The Arcane" into spells. He has the strongest connection to it over any other being in existence. Aman'Thul is the "all father" of the titans, and is the "first born". He's comes in second behind the one who is the embodiment of Arcane energy. He's more powerful in general, but when it comes to actual Arcane magic, and spells, he's only second.

Anzu Wyliei how so? Titans are the closest entities to Arcane magic in the cosmos. A demon is almost fel incarnate, and a titan is almost arcane incarnate. He’s spot on with the lore. As for raw power, Amanthul straight up grabbed Y’Shaarj, universally agreed to be the most powerful of the Old Gods, and ripped him off the face of the planet, and CRUSHED HIM IN HIS HAND. Sargeras, before he gathered the demons, embraced the Fel, and founded the Legion, was technically stronger still. Sargeras split a planet in half, killing a world soul/unborn titan, because he saw that it was poisoned by Old God corruption. I’m thinking now, by feat of killing Norgannon and Amanthul, by definition, Sargeras is the strongest arcane wielder in the cosmos.

@@TheBlaert Is it? Azshara has literally been stated by multiple people to be the strongest mortal mage to ever live. That means stronger than the Guardians. Illidan; like Azshara; was gifted at a very young age, and was seen as a prodigy, much like Malfurion was with his connection to Nature. Illidan gave up that life for his pursuit in Fel magic to use the Demon's own power against him. If Illidan continued to practice Arcane magic over the course of 10,000 years, I believe he would have been stronger than the Guardians. What makes you think the Guardians were as powerful as Azshara or Illidan's potential?

There is no room for discussion here: Azshara is the face of the mages, the most powerful one to ever exist. The only ones comparable are Jaina, Kael’thas, Khadgar, Modera and such but even then I’d say each has their own specializations.

I believe that Kel'Thuzad would have qualified as "powerful". He might have needed the sunwell and sorcery to turn into a lich, but I think that being a lich entails a certain amount of magical prowess. I think 1v1, he would have destroyed Jaina in WC3 as a lich.

first off, neither Jaina or Azshara could have gone toe to toe with a fraction of Sargeras' power like Aegwynn did when she entombed his avatar. Azshara THOUGHT she was on the same level of power as Sargeras but there is no way. She wasnt more powerful than N'zoth, which wouldve been wrecked by Sargeras. Sargeras has the power to kill worlds alone, Azshara couldnt save her city. Aegwynn is the most powerful ever. i guess thats as far as my opinion goes tho.

You did a good job with this one because you can not truly put one arcane user above another because they all use tons of resources to fuel their power from artifacts to other people to planets the list never ends so theoretically the most powerful mage ever would be the one that lives the longest because they have the most time to study and learned about ways to harness arcane power if you live 25,000 years compared to 100 years and can travel through space your gonna find a lot more sources of arcane to draw from

I believe the reason him and his mother were not counted is because of the powers of the Guardian of Tirisfal, which is the power of several other mages that pool their power into the Guardian. So yes Medivh was very powerful, but part of that was due to Aegwyn passing the power of the Guardian to him. But I think that power was dissipated once he was killed, and when Aegwyn resurrected him he was still incredibly powerful. So I agree he should have had a little more acknowledgement.

Illiadan probably should have been included, while he isn't a spell caster in the regular sense his origins lay in arcane magic with some druidism sprinkled in and even without direct access to the wells power he was arguably second only to Azshara during the war of the ancients. In Wow we don't really see him use magic all that often as he typicaply relies on Fel and shadow magic to supplement his melee abilities but in wc3 and the expanded content such as books he is a true master of the arts in particular when it comes to ritual magic. The fact Kiljaiden specifically sought out Illidan and requested he destroy the Lich King (despite his betrayal multiple times) and the vast armies and power at his call speaks volumes to Illidans capabilities.

Jaina did have the focusing Iris to help her destroy Orgrimmar. Equally, I cannot see Jaina being more powerful than Azshara personally. Azshara had her own personal agenda and we were more an inconvenience to deal with rather than an actual threat.

Jaina is without a doubt the strongest. In the battle for dazaralor we only managed to injure her... I have managed to KILL Nzoth (old god), Aggramar (titan), Yogg Saron (old god), Arthas (Lich King), Ragnaros (elemental lord), Al Akir (elemental lord), Deathwing (dragon aspect) and much more. So she's more powerful than any of those that i listed. Makes no sense why she didn't just solo N'zoth if he's making such a big ruckus. Right now Jaina and Sylvanas are indestructible and probably have the thickest plot armor that I've ever seen. Seriously they're probably on par with Rey from star wars or higher. A pair of Mary Sue's who will end the Pantheon and the Void Lords if they were foolish enough to challenge Sylvanas or Jaina.

One of the strongest mages are player mages themselves during legion with their artifacts. Arguably current mages are equally strong with the heart of azeroth. Who knows what level of power will shadowlands offer to players. We getting super charged equipment similar to the helm of domination or frostmourne.

I count characters like Azshara, Kil'jaeden and Archimonde, as well as the guardian Medivh and his mother among "god-like" beings. I mean, Kil'jaeden was able to destroy a planet with one spell. The Legion would have rekt Azeroth as well if not for Sargeras plan to corrupt Azeroth and make into his consort, which restricted the options for the demons, especially the powerful ones among them. Of course there is still a different between such characters and a titan. When it comes to the other more or less beings, i still think Kael'thas is/was quite a bit more powerful compared to characters like Jaina or Khadgar. Although it depends, as Kael'thas as a Blood Mage in Tempest Keep could be considered a powerful mage and warlock, as he used fel magic in destructive ways as well. On top of that, Blood Elves are specialists in sucking mana and life right out of other living and magical beings, to counter and repell and drain magic spells etc. Jaina on the other hand, although she seems to have become much more powerful with BfA, wasn't even able to scrath Thalen, who is a powerful blood elf mage, even though Jaina put all her might into her spells when she was attacking Thalen. And it is very likely that Thalen isn't on Kael'thas level. On top of that, i think in a pure 1vs1 between Kaelthas and even BfA Jaina, Kaels fire and fel fire would overcome and destroy Jainas water and ice magics. So my money is on Kael'thas, even though Blizzard might see it different, as they have a super huge boner for human characters.
