While I do love delving into minor characters, sometimes I wish there were more "regular Joes" in the Star Wars universe that ended up having 10 seconds on screen. The lone Y-wing pilot who survived the battle of Yavin was Bob Smith. He didn't come from a well connected background, he didn't have force powers, and none of his family was killed by the Empire. He just joined the Rebellion because he wanted to and was a good enough (or lucky enough) pilot to survive. Bob became a life insurance salesman and is now retired, and has 3 grandchildren.

@a.morphous666 жыл бұрын
Is it freedom though? Or do they want to replace order with chaos, stability with imbalance, and peace with violence? Would the average person really be affected at all by the Empire’s ruthlessness? No. You may have noticed that most people joining the Rebels have a backstory of the Empire wronging them somehow. That’s because most people don’t have any other reason. After the Clone Wars and the horror surrounding it, a stable and orderly government was what the galaxy truly needed. And all those quadrillions of beings believed as much as I do that the Empire was entirely necessary.
@EbonyManta6 жыл бұрын
That depends on how you define "average person." If you were nonhuman, you got shafted, for instance. Palpatine's Empire was also just as corrupt as the Republic before it, just in different ways - so there was a lot of people who got shafted because they were on the wrong side of politics. And if you protested, even peacefully, you'd find yourself in trouble. There's a reason there were so many people with personal grudges against the Empire. Also, people only like authoritarian governments during a crisis and immediately afterward. For example, the whole thing of "The galaxy needs stability after the Clone Wars" only matters to people who _lived_ through the Clone wars and remember it - which, as of Ep IV, are people over 29 (assuming human growth patterns). Anyone younger than that just sees a totalitarian government that restricts personal freedom, for no real benefit. Even among the elders, there are people like Senators Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Garm Bel Iblis (founders of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, which became the Rebel Alliance) who lived through the crisis, saw Palpatine rise to power... and proceeded to watch as he refused to give up power even after bring "peace" to the galaxy. As the Empire grew more and more strict even in the absence of real crises, It became apparent to such people that it was really just about Palpatine's personal power.

Lord Erebus they werent expendable. compared to an entire galaxy, they were the 0.0000000000001% or something along the lines of that. its why the jedi go to such lengths to obtain children that are force sensitive at an early age given how uncommon they are. the larger the sample size of a population you have, then it is a given that youll have more candidates for jedi. but they were still extremely rare, and expensice and time intensive to train.
@brainplay80607 жыл бұрын
Geez both stories are bad. Either they had to go overboard and make the pilot an Alderanean and later a princess or its another jedi wannabe. Why can't they just be some regular person that has a regular life? This is why Wedge Antilles is so liked. He's a normal person that's just good at his job and got better over time.
@Deviax287 жыл бұрын
Believing in the Force and all of them being force sensitive, which explains why they were so good, are two very different things. I do not recall Wedge ever being labeled as force sensitive in any of the books. So, Wedge was just a regular guy with some above average piloting skills that became an even better pilot over time with all the battles he flew in. That is what people relate to him being a regular guy with average skills and his constant use of those skills improved over time to make him a legendary hero in the Rebel Alliance and his fans.

Legends- "What I remember about the rise of the Empire is... is how quiet it was. During the waning hours of the Clone Wars, the 501st Legion was discreetly transferred back to Coruscant. It was a silent trip. We all knew what was about to happen, what we were about to do. Did we have any doubts? Any private traitorous thoughts? Perhaps, but no one said a word. Not on the flight back to Coruscant, not when Order 66 came down, and not when we marched into the Jedi Temple. Not a word..." Canon- clones have inhibitor chips which make them always follow the order without a doubt, like droids
@sparrowlt7 жыл бұрын
Well.. George Lucas films make clones look like robots.. just expendable clones. Clone Wars series made clones more than human beings.. gave them soul, personality, character, traits and despite all being based on the same CGI and voiced by the same guy , made all of them distinct.. So Clone Wars had to make something to justify ALL clones turn against their allied Jedis without doubt or asking ..or adeciding to arrest instead the Jedi for trial.. the clones we see for years in the series werent as mechanical or droid like as in the movies... Rex would never turn against Anakin or Ashoka .. no matter what they ordered or told him.. or Wolf or Trebot or Fives.. it wasnt as easy to believe anymore.. so the modified "brain hidden trap" made sense

Did you NOT hear the part where it said that the Pilot from Legends manifested his Force powers _Later_ in life? That means that during the Battle of Yavin 4, The Pilot didn't _HAVE_ force powers until Post-ROTJ. What happened was basically what happened in Legend of Korra after Korra fused with Ravva, where previously non-benders became benders to bring balance to the world. This is likely a Similar case, where previously Non-Force Users became Force Users after ROTJ... Which likely made the name more fitting. It would have been Ironic had Han Solo become a Force User, and only found out by accident.

@Victor-0563 жыл бұрын
It's not "Secret", it's more that their Force Powers Manifested later on, likely by the Force itself to compensate for the low number of Force users. Remember that in Legends, only the Sith and a Very small handful of Light/Grey aligned Force Users remained, thanks in part to the Sith committing acts of Genocide on many Force Users that wouldn't submit to Sith Teachings. Think of it like how Legend of Korra had the awakening of New Airbenders from those who weren't previously Natural Benders, such as Bumi among others. It was described in LoK as "A Means to bring Balance to the World", as there was a Huge abundance of Earth, Water and Firebenders, but only a Small Handful of Airbenders that barely even hit the Double Digits. The same applies for Legends. In Star Wars Legends, The Sith didn't end with Sidious, but instead, had a secret Order of Sith that had been working in the Shadows alongside Sidious... Though Sidious was admitted to have damaged their plans quite a bit with his actions. Each of these strange "Non-Force Users becoming Force-Users" was basically a way of telling us that the Force is more than a Medium for it's users, but alive, and possibly sapient. It created more Force Users to bring Balance, as in Legends, there was a lot more Sith than there were Non-Sith, said Sith having retained their Order unlike the Non-Sith, who were basically disorganized Users simply winging it.

But, y'know, it would be kinda sad if we destroyed ALL of them, even though nobody we care about is gonna be flying one. So let's have one survive at the end - y'know, just because it feels right... THE E-U: Hey, what's this? The films don't explain who's flying that lone Y-wing at the end of Ep. IV? Well pfft, we can do that! But y'know, keep it simple - I mean come on, it's just some random pilot who happened to survive, nothing special... DISNEY-CANNON: We want to tell this story about this interesting character! But y'know, we have to shoehorn them into the original films somehow, since that's the IP we spent so much money on. Oh, I know! Remember that lone Y-wing at the end of Ep.IV? We can make our character its pilot! Perfect! Eh, what's that? You mean the Expanded *COUGH* Legends cannon already fleshed that pilot out? Hmm you don't say...

I actually have a little story that might connect the two. While Evaan took part in the Battle of Scariff, Keyan took part in protecting Polis Massa while the rebels in the outpost beam the bits of the Death Star plans to the fleet. During the battle of Scariff, Evaan took a bad hit, but was able to survive the battle. Upon returning to Yavin IV, she was hold up in the medical ward where she met Keyan. The two pilots struck up a friendship, but all of a sudden, Keyan started feeling a great disturbance in the force, he doesn’t know it, but he felt the destruction of Alderaan through The Force albeit untrained. When Evaan heard about Alderaan, she broke down, but Keyan was there to comfort her. After the Millennium Falcon arrived with the Princess and the plans, all pilots were getting ready to attack the Death Star, but Evaan was still recovering from the injuries she sustained at Scariff, so she recommended that Keyan take her place on the mission. Before he set off, Evaan told him to come back alive which he did. Keyan and Evaan would later be in attendance as Princess Leia would present the medals to Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. (Both are interesting characters and this merges a story for both Canon and Legends characters.)

***** He said "I'm hit, I can't stay with you". In english it means "I can't stay with you", and not "I'll stay around here"! ;) In fact, both Biggs and Luke needed help later but he didn't come back. It's so obvious that he run back to the base asap.

For once, I'm going with the Disney Timeline. A surviving Aleraanian other than Leia, who becomes the leader of other survivors sounds pretty cool.

Maybe you can answer a couple questions I have had of Star Wars for awhile now. 1. Yavin was orbiting a Gas Giant(Jupiterish) why didn't the empire just destroy it instead of the whole entering orbit and waiting 10 -15 min I know its the script but was there a reason? 2. Endor was a moon but of what planet? How big was the planet another Gas Giant? How big was Endor as Death Star II was supposed to be larger than the original Death Star? Or the subject of the DSII why was it using the full power of the Superlaser to destroy the rebel ships? And why would the laser only destroy one ship at a time would/shouldn't the laser have just blown through the ship and outward?
@Spawn6747 жыл бұрын
Time passage in Star Wars is never really addressed. From Alderans destruction to Yavin how much time elapsed? Always thought when the center laser fired the DS was using full power. Although as time passes and new movies come out they explain things but the original movies will never catch up with reality unless they reboot the whole trilogy to reflect the changes.

Forget that jobber, we need to know the new canon identify of RED TWO. The Y-Wing ace who managed to take a BOMBER and shoot down three TIE Interceptors at Endor and live. Yeah, not even Wedge did that.

I'm pretty sure that it was Gold 5 that survived. You hear the last pilot that is shot shown say "Gold leader to Gold 5, Lost Starky and Lost Hutch. They at us from behind!" then he gets shot down. So Gold 5 was the one to survive.
@naksachaisaejane19825 ай бұрын
Sorry about being late, but that last Y-wing was gold 5. His final words are: Gold 5 to red leader. We lost Tyree. We lost Dutch. They came from behind.

Also it may be Herra Syndulla from star wars rebels. She took part in the mission to stole the plan of death star. In rogue one when jyn erso go with a pilot we can hear voice "captain herra syndulla go to the 2-nd corner" and in battle in rogue one we can see her spaceship called "Ghost" P.S. sorry for English. I am not Englishman but i hope you understand me

if you had owned the old computer flight simulator X-Wing for IBM PC. Through the guide book you are told the story of Farlander from his perspective, battle by battle I believe. I have since lost my copy of the game and guide book so I can not confirm this but I recall it clearly for being an excellent game and an excellent read for a video game guide book.

I definitely prefer Canon in this case (though I think her becoming Princess was a bit silly) Like a few other comments said, more regular people being heroes in Star Wars is needed. In this case, the Legends guy being a guy who lost his whole family to the empire and turned out to be Force Sensitive is even worse lmao

Technically according to the original novel, "several x-wings, y-wings, and one battered looking freighter accelerated away from the battle station, racing toward the distant curve of Yavin." Several certainly means more than one. Which "one" was in the Y-wing in the movie, it could be anyone of the "several" survivors. The camera doesn't pan or zoom out so don't assume that the movie showed all the surviving pilots.

Out of all the times I have watched new hope growing up I never noticed this until now. Very interesting nonetheless, god I miss the originals. Hearing about the Y-Wing pilots family being killed and wife badly hurt it reminds me how much of a good job STAR WARS has done story wise without having to use a lot of bad language and adult themes so I was wondering how many curse words have been used in the STAR WARS franchise?

George Lucas stated that many more ships than just those four surived the battle, it was just one small cluster who flew away alongside Luke and the Falcon. I don't even assume that's Wedge with them since he withdrew some minutes before and thus was probably already a good distance off; therefore, who was in the Y-Wing really does not matter since plenty of other pilots got away (though not nearly so many as joined the battle).
@docnathan39595 жыл бұрын
He could be the guy in the Y wing who was the second to be shot. Notice that only the cockpit was hit, everywhere else was intact. Maybe he somehow left the trench offscreen and the other pilot didn’t notice

I like the canon version better. There are so many force-sensitives in Legends that force-sensitivity just isn't as special. I love how, in the new canon, there are a lot of strong, totally awesome characters without the force (such as Sabine, Jyn, Casian, Bodhi, Hera, etc) and they're unique and different.

I can't help but recall the Rogue Squadron games everytime I see a space battle in the Star Wars movies. And it just seemed odd to me that a Y wing was a able to catch up with the other X wings and it wasn't a very good fighter. Was that lone pilot camping in some corner of battle space?
@chrishughes3787 жыл бұрын
We always see the Death Star destroy rock based planets with ease. Could the Death Star destroy a gas giant like Jupiter, Neptune or Bespin? What would be the effect of using a super laser on a gas based planet? Would the laser simply cut through the planet or destroy it? Great videos and keep them coming. Thanks, C.
