The song is absolute beauty. The video breaks my heart every single time. Even though the video depicts the plight of LGBTQ+ people in Russia, LGBTQ+ Americans still deal with violence and hatred everyday as well. I didn’t say that to diminish or make comparison to another country. I just wanted to point out that this hatred and violence towards that community is global, and we all need to recognize that love is love is love and support each other’s happiness as human beings ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

I believe the video has to do with how Lgbt people are treated in Russia. Also Hozier sings about a very big wealthy church putting time & resources into hating others instead of helping people. ‘a fresh poison each week’.and the priest scandal. Brilliant song. Dude... Major props and much respect to you for not instantly curling your lip up and freaking out once they showed the two men kissing. I mean, I understand that there are people who "don't agree" with same sex relationships but they still exist. Just because it's a same sex relationship doesn't mean they don't love like relationships that are heterosexual. There's no need to bash it. If you don't agree with same sex relationships or marriages, don't be in one. It's literally that simple.

He’s such a wonderful artist, I really appreciate the way you considered each part of the song and video. Hozier’s vocals don’t fall short in live performances either! (and regularly exceed vocals on his produced recordings) A few years after he released and toured with his first album, he came back to promote his second album by doing a pop up show in an NYC subway, he sang five there(Take Me To Church, Almost(Sweet Music), Movement, Nina Cried Power, and Work Song) He’s such a wonderful artist, you should definitely check out more songs of his. I’d recommend “Nina Cried Power - ft. Mavis Staples” - either the music video, or Live at Windmill Lane Studios Or “To Be Alone” - Live in Kilkenny A bunch of other songs being mentioned here are wonderful too, Nina Cried Power and Cherry Wine are heavier(especially Cherry Wine, Nina is more stirring”, and To Be Alone is more fun

I loved this song. Still do. I didn't watch the video for a few months. I enjoy deep songs. I interpret this song as a view on religion. They judge, their rules. When I finally watched the video, I realized I was correct. The video deplicts 2 gay men. That is taboo in a lot of religions. This song is so much more than the video. Very powerful, sad video. Great song, clever video, great reaction.

As a gay man this video is so hard to watch. The hate out there is real. There are those out there who hurt and kill people like me for loving who we love. I wear the one on my left had because I am willing to fight for my brothers and sisters on the colored flag and spectrum. Hozier, uses artistic license; mentioning a she in the lyrics, to broaden his audience I'm sure. However, he used a gay couple and far-right gangs in the video. Recorded in black and white for a more compelling and graphic impact, (NO color to misinterpret) it just doesn't get any more powerful than this. (Black and white are not colors, they're shades or neutrals ~ they have absolutely nothing in common, complete opposites of one another and both fight for dominance) The video portrays an era when anti-gay propaganda laws were relevant, evoking prejudice and hatred. When homosexuality was viewed similarly to the sexual sins of beastiality and pedophilia; not negating religious organizations that would undermine the human experience of sexuality. If you don't feel SOMETHING while watching this video, check for a pulse!
