I believe the chest is symbolic of their "forbidden" love for each other. If I'm not mistaken, the video was in response to the violence against same sex couples particularly in Russia. Truly despicable that some humans can't accept that you love who you love. Great reaction, thank you for sharing this, as well as your own experiences.

@Derek Reacts I wish you and your partner all the love and safety you both deserve. You ARE correct when you speak to the levels of violence and how it was SO rampant years ago. I'm new to your channel and I'm probably one of the older ones here. I'm what's called "a woman of a certain age" as the expression goes. I'm an older biker lady in my MID 50s. I'm Brooklyn born but Long Island raised so I grew up hanging out a lot in NYC. I've dealt with MANY friends of mine getting beaten up and some were killed from anti LGBTQ community violence. It was a very strange time back then because so many hospitals didn't even want to TOUCH their bodies. This was at the beginning of what we called The Red Plague of when HIV/AIDS came onto the scene. Ppl were already sick or dying and getting beaten up or dying that way... NOBODY gave a shit about us. It's so sad to me to know that there us STILL so much hate in the world against the community. This song always makes me cry because I know that I'm watching another murder because his body isn't moving at the end. I'm an international prisoner advocate and part of my work is geared to the LGBTQ community inside. The levels of violence inside our jails and prisons hasn't REALLY changed much either. I've been an advocate for OVER 35 YEARS. I watch this video and it makes me cry because it's sad BUT in a way it gives me hope because now that otters see it. Maybe they'll join up and find it in their hearts to speak out. I'm OF a different generation and I've lived my life as a closeted person for the most part UP until recently. Only recently have I told some close friends and SOME have been accepting of me. I NEVER thought that ppl I've been friends with for over 30 years would be so close minded and I'd have to cut them out of my life. My family is unaware of my status and will never be told. I KNOW they won't be accepting so I've made the decision to stay closeted with them. It serves ME no purpose to have any extras negativity in my life from my 93 yo mother. I hate to sound callous but honestly how long is she going to be with me so why add drama to an already strained relationship? I think everyone needs to see this video AND also the one he did in the subway~THAT version is awesome. I hope that everyone if us here finds their voice to speak their truth that I can't do with some people. I feel it's important but I'm stunted in that area and that's why I work a lot with our LGBTQ youth in detention. I hope everyone here can help THEM more~trust me when I tell you that their suicide rates are higher than others kids outside the community. IF we all focus on the youth then we can help build a stronger next generation of our people. I wish you all peace love and solidarity my wonderful family. XOXO ❤️

I also wound up on the floor in a mess of tears and memories of things I had thought gone with my youth. I am 43. In the age of marriage equality, and all of that.....I thought the horrors of my 90's were gone gone gone. I am not easily taken from my feet. This video triggered things I did not know were there in me. I did not give much thought that I remain single mostly because in my town I do not know how it would be seen and taken. Perhaps it is the reason the degradation comes from me FIRST so no one else can. Because I have seen and remember what can come from just living life to its fullest. I just do not want to become a statistic. And I have only recently discovered this video within the last year or so

The first part of the lyrics of this song reference "she" and "her". "She" is the catholic church (as Hozier is Irish). : My lover's got humor She's the giggle at a funeral Knows everybody's disapproval I should've worshiped her sooner If the Heavens ever did speak She's the last true mouthpiece Every Sunday's getting more bleak A fresh poison each week "We were born sick", you heard them say it My church offers no absolutes She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom" The only Heaven I'll be sent to Is when I'm alone with you I was born sick, but I love it Command me to be well

@@godisacritter8571 The 'lover' is actually his lover, the church is one saying that being with this person is a sin. That's the standard interpretation that Hozier confirmed. Typically the relationship between Hozier and his lover interpreted to be a stand-in for a homosexual relationship that is condemned by the church, not that his lover is the church as the original poster suggested. So the song is saying that while the Church offers shame and hypocrisy the love found in the relationship between Hozier and his lover is the true source of salvation in his life, not religion.

I faced bullying verbal and physical after i came out in 7th grade in 1990. I was one of the only out gay kids at my jr high there were a few more of us in High School but we still faced discrimination and bullying. I also face the bullying in youth group at church and at church camp (where i met my first boyfriend) The hate and verbal and physical bullying at youth group gave me the push to leave the church and all religion. #PasstheEqualityAct. I always assumed the box was a metaphor for their hiding “burying” their homosexuality and when the one finds it’s been dug up he knows they have found out about their secret and then they try and force it open end up throwing it in the fire and destroying it aka their killing the man on the ground.

This world is so full of hypocrites. That is what he meant in the verse "That's a fine lookin high horse"...then asked what's in "their stable" lol (think it's a jab at the priests who molest young boys, yet at the same time condemn same sex relationships) I cry every time I see this video, it makes me feel like I've been punched in the gut. No one deserves things like this. I know it's just a song, but as Dereck said, it HAPPENS. I thought of Matthew Shepard when I saw this....

In a way he kind of describes what the Box represents in the song "like real people do", which song could also be interpreted as about the same subject matter. If you look up the lyrics of that one, it's very poignant as well in that same sense. New sub here, excellent content.

I think the only morally defunct monsters in this topic are the poor excuses of humanity that attack complete strangers because of who they choose to love. It's not your business, does not affect your life and if anyone is worthy of judgement and damnation it's these assholes who terrorize people that don't share their same views of the world.

The box represents their secrets. Their homosexual love that they hide and don't want to come out in this dangerous, close minded society because it could mean their death. Betrayed and rejected by the church, told they were born Sick and will never receive absolution. Their only hope of heaven they will ever experience is their love for each other. This song makes me weep every time. Why so much cruel hatred in the world.....
