Hello dearest viewers, seeing some comments regarding OGs of chess content, and again want to reiterate what I say in every video - this is why I don't start mentioning names, because if I forget one, some people think I do it deliberately. There are many, many, many OG chess channels. Chessbrah, Agadmator, Mato, Daniel King, the list goes on and on. The point of the video was simply to discuss Hikaru's recent interviews, show you some of my stats, and how chess has grown for 4 years.

It's a damn shame Antonio/Agadmator rarely, if ever, gets any credit. Dude's been grinding out videos since 2017. I also believe he was the first chess tuber who reached 1 million subs. Yes, Agadmator is the first chess youtube channel to reach 1 million subscribers. Who would've thought a chess channel would ever reach 1 million subs? It was a monumental achievement at the time, it basically marked the start of the chess boom. Agadmator was drawing in thousands and up to even millions of views to historic and modern games alike, he was doing all this long before GothamChess or Hikaru.

There are two very different questions here. The first question: who's the most famous out of Levy, Hikaru and Magnus? The second question: who did the most for chess between Magnus and the internet as a whole? Levy asks the first question while Hikaru asks the second one. On the first question, it is very easy to demonstrate that Magnus is the most famous: indeed, everyone who knows Hikaru or Levy undoubtedly also knows Magnus, while the opposite isn't true. Plenty of people have heard of Magnus because of some vague interest in chess yet have no presence at all on youtube. Therefore Magnus is necessarily more famous. But that doesn't invalidate Hikaru's point. The internet as a whole had a huge impact on chess, and given that it includes the work of multiple people, I would definitely agree that it did more overall than Magnus alone.

The first and biggest spike in chess history was the Fischer/Spassky championship. We don’t have easy access to data to quantify this statement but I lived through it and it is impossible to overstate the effect it had. The whole world was following it. Shelby Lyman became as famous as Walter Cronkite in the US. People didn’t tune into the TV news, they tuned into the chess match. The battle wasn’t an artificially created rivalry, it was the test of American freedom and democracy versus the industrialized, subsidized Soviet chess machine.
@KenKurkowski29 күн бұрын
I totally agree. I had been playing chess casually, off and on, since I was a little kid, but started rated chess a couple of years after Fischer-Spassky. That was when a Canadian Open tournament attracted 600 (!!!) players, nowhere near that since those days.

Nothing compares to the Bobby Fischer era. That was the golden age of chess. Chess was as popular as any other major sport, followed by millions. Magnus achieved legendary status in the public eye just for being consistently amazingly good at the game, which is kind of unique in the history of chess (not the being consistently good part, the getting public fame for it part). Other chess legends all had to accomplish something incredible or be involved in something revolutionary to get that public acclaim. Bobby Fischer had to beat the Soviet juggernauts to win the title of World Chess Champion in a proxy match of the Cold War. Kasparov had to play Deep Blue. How many other grandmasters - other than those currently playing the game - even have *any* name recognition at all? You mention Capablanca - one of the greatest chess players of all time - and the average doofus on the street thinks "Here's lookin at you kid" (that's a reference to Casablanca, the 1942 classic masterpiece of cinematography, for the chess nerds here who've never seen a movie before). Morphy, Alekhine, Tal... blanks stares. Magnus? Everybody knows who Magnus is. My 70-something year old mom, who has never played a game of chess in her life, never watched any chess content, can't even name the pieces (not even using "horsey" and "castle"), has absolutely zero interest in the game - she knows who Magnus is.

I actually really enjoy these kind of videos where there's no chess analyzing but just talking about a particular subject even if its within the chess world!

It’d be nice to see more commentary videos like this, from my POV. Your chess recaps are great but I can only click on them when I am able to look at the game and give it my full attention, whereas this style of vid (+C Squared) is nice as it allows me to keep the chess content going while on the go or cleaning the house.

Me. Me, me, me. This is all about me. And even when it is not, you have to notice the absence of me. It's almost always about me, though. Yours truly, Me.

If I ever have the chance to meet Levy in a non-chess environment, I'll first ask him: " Hey Gothamchess, is that Magnus Carlsen over there?" and then act like I didn't know who Levy was.

I've been watching your videos back when you had less than 10k subscribers, but even before that I was watching Agadmator, he is the one who got me into chess. I remember being blown away by his videos covering the Alpha Zero V Stockfish back in 2017. I also remember the game you and him played against HIkaru and Eric back in 2020, where you kept telling what to do and he just ignored you and did his own thing and lost the game because he wanted to queen his pawn halfway down the board, lol. I remember vividly when you got more subs than him, and you even made a video about it. You are a great content creator, better than Agadmator, and that's why you have so many eyes on you every day. I haven't watched a single one of his videos in a couple of years but credit where credit is due, he lit the torch that you now carry, the least you could do is mention him. Best of luck in your road to GM, I can't wait to see you get the title.

If Gotham brushed his hair, nobody would recognize him at all. His wife would have to call Magnus to ask where did Levy go.

I guess you don't know how curly hair works. The curls would just brush out and look like an afro. It would look pretty similar silhouette-wise
