JCVD was in fact a competitive fighter in his youth, he competed under his birth name Jean-Claude Van Varenberg in both point system Karate & later full-contact Kickboxing. He even competed as member of the Belgian national Karate team in european tournaments. You can find his off. fight records online, he wasn't some undefeated world champion but he was a legit high level athlete. He also got his shit together, cleaned up from drugs and is still in great shape today. The guy is 61 years old but can still do the spinning kicks. Plus, he seems like a chill dude who doesn't take himself too serious and can lough at all the memes. Seagal on the other hand, has never been in any official fight whatsover and his entire martial arts credentials are from his former father-in-law, who was a high ranking member in the japanese Aikido Association. He pretty much set him up with a dojo, where Seagal's former wife was doing the actual teaching.(She's still today a respected Aikido instructor in Japan.) Also, he seems like a total narcissist who believes his own BS and don't get me started on all the creepy stuff he has been accused of, over the last decades.

Van Damme is a flawed man like anybody else. And he admits that he's made his share of mistakes. But what strikes me in stark contrast to Seagal is that Jean Claude Van Damme has learned from his mistakes through the years and he has matured and gained a lot of wisdom. JCVD worked hard during his career to keep his body in shape, worked on his acting skills, and working with good people to make the best movies he could. Yea, I recall Stallone telling that story. The thing is Seagal is an aikido practitioner. Aikido practitioners are known for their epic abilities in their fantasies and no abilitoes in reality. Real fists are to aikido practitioners the way kryptonite is to Superman. In the event you think I'm being too harsh to aikido, you should know that I'm underselling how terrible of a martial arts it is. You might say, "But Abraham, the prowess of a martial art depends on the proficiency of the fighter wielding it," hohoho, not so, my friend. Aikido is truly, truly fake and they maintain their status by having fake demonstrations where 20 students will pretend to attack grandmasters, who then goes on to defeat them with wrist flicks and similarly weak responses. I feel more disdain towards aikido than Space Ice feels towards Steven Seagal. Argh! Anyway, what were we talking about?

Van Damme was in the top tier of those mid 80]s to mid/late 90's action stars along side the likes of Stallone and Arnie in my book. And though not a very good actor no doubt, actually over his career delivered a few performances that were actually pretty damn good, films like "Universal Soldier: Regeneration," "Time Cop", "The Legionnaire," and "Assassination Games" - (which for a low budgeted B action flick that came out a little over a decade ago, was actually pretty damn good imo). Seagal on the other hand - was a complete dog-shit actor, with awful fight choreography, and only was in one decent film - the one in which he died within the first half hour of the movie lol. The only other one of those 80's-90's action stars that was close to being as terrible as he - was Chuck Norris, who atleast had some good fight choreography. Personally i couldn't stand Chuck's whole persona both on screen and off. So much so that, just like Steven, made pretty much every film, (including that "Walker: Texas Ranger" show that so many people beloved for some reason), absolute torture for me to watch. At least he wasn't nearly the horrible piece of shit Steven was/is as a person.

Oh yeah, Executive Decision where he gets sucked out of the F-117. Seems like John Leguizamo got his parts after Steven was written out of the movie for being a massive diva (just a theory). I think he was almost passable in Under Seige, and even had one good line delivery ("You're in the Navy, remember? It's not a job, it's an adventure!") but I don't think I could've watched that movie ever again if it wasn't for Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones delightfully hamming it up.

I liked Seagal's movies, but wanted to be like Van Damme. His movies had more variety and his characters were likable. Seagal's films required him to have no range, but be a wrecking machine. Never in any of Seagal's films do you fear for his life because you knew he was going to kick their ass and break some arms in the process. Personally I found nothing wrong with that, but that's just what his films were. Van Damme played a mostly reluctant warrior in his films. He fought for causes instead of just being a badass. He's also a lot more humble than Seagal. Van Damme hurt guys in his movies by accident because he's that strong. I think he really knocked out a fighter in Bloodsport because he moved too fast.

Steven Seagal gave no proof of how good he was in his movies,Van Damme struggled with his problems with drugs while improving himself everyday. We can ask every actors who worked with Van Damme and Steven wich one is better and 90% of them say Van Damme. Van Damme has the looks and the style. Steven Seagal may think he is a tough guy and martial artist but Van Damme is the example of the real tough guy and martial artist and he can actually kick unlike Steven and the fights on Van Damme's movies despite all the flaws they can have are still more realistic.

Regarding the way Seagal runs... I am about 10 years younger than Seagal, and when I ran track in middle school, it was coached by pretty much everyone to run with your hands looks like that. It apparently was supposed to relax your upper body so you could focus all your energy into your legs or something. It looked ridiculous at track meets, and I'm not sure if it even worked, but if Seagal had similar coaching as a youngster, that kind of explains why he runs like that.
