Actor and director Richard Ayoade is famously shy. So shy, in fact, that when he wrote his latest book, he interviewed himself. He talks to Channel 4 News about why he's so uncomfortable with interviews. Subscribe to Channel 4 News: bit.ly/1sF6pOJ

Grant Kerr There might be some misunderstanding here: if a network asks/accepts to interview Tarantino and they agree that the purpose of the interview is to promote his new film, the network should stick to the agreement. @@vaderetro264 You're making an assumption there which is not true. Channel 4 news wouldn't agree that the purpose of the interview from their side is to promote anything. You've missed the point of what they touch on in the video above, the interviewee is there to promote something, the interviewer from a news show is there to ask the interviewee questions which are somehow relevant to current affairs. They would both generally discuss and agree question areas before the interview which would obviously extend beyond who their favorite character in a movie is. It's a news show, not TMZ.

He's not a "bully", he's a critical journalist on a public broadcaster used primarily to interviewing serious politicians- what did you wan't him to do with RDJ and Tarantino, wax lyrical about how they where gods on earth like some sycophantic Good Morning bootlicker? The real problem here is that the C4 execs thought it was appropriate to get him to interview an egotistical movie star and an ASD director (no one can argue that Tarantino doesn't exude Aspergers from his pores- and I say that as someone with it) on serious news program like this? it's just a desperate grasp for ratings.

It's interesting how he was far more composed and on point with tarantino. With ayode he seems completely confused. No idea what to do. I don't know if that shows the difference in intellect between the British and americabs, or if ayode is just that brilliant. Utterly fascinating though.
@Cinqmil

Roar Blast He got a taste of his own medicine. Ayoade flips the frame on him and is utterly ruthless about it. Ayoade seemed to know the guy too. I think Tarantino didn't and was just caught by surprise. But the gut reaction he gave was the correct one. That interviewer is a closet asshole: seems to just be interested but passively-agressively denigrades his guests. Afterwards he pretends he didn't know what happened. I think he did: which makes him an unbelievable dick. IF he really didn't know what went on, then he is an idiot and has no EQ skills whatever. Whatever the case may be, Ayoade absolutely knew what was going on. As if he looked at the whole situation from a higher dimension. Untouchable. Great television indeed, I agree.

You could not be more wrong. The only one who got massacred here is you. This was a delight to watch. Many people here seem to be too immature to understand what's going on. Krishnan Guru-Murthy was NOT 'owned' or any such thing. If anything, Ayoade appreciated and admired at virtually all times what Guru-Murthy was attempting to do, and Guru-Murthy appreciated Ayoade's wit and intellectual depth. The interviewer was simply trying to engage Ayoade in a meaningful conversation vs adopting the self-promotional nature of most other interviews. In fact, Ayoade here expresses admiration for Guru-Murthy in how he approached the Tarantino interview, in addition to the obvious point he was making regarding the marketing-centricity of modern-day celebrity interviews. Tarantino was most incensed by the fact that he couldn't promote what he had come to promote during the interview - that catches Ayoade's attention and derision. This interview was like watching two top-seeded tennis players keep up a very rapid rally for over four minutes. Brilliant stuff and from the way it ended, they both left with plenty of mutual respect.

Madness by Design Ha ha. What on earth has my username got to do with anything we are talking about? I will indulge you on that so what exactly have you gleaned from my username that substantiates your veiled conclusion. Please elaborate because at the moment it sounds like one of those go-to, embarrassing KZbin attempts at a put down. A limpp insult at best. In fact your whole reply is just a passive aggressive insult that highlights the fact you have nothing of value to add.
@madnessbydesign1415
@madnessbydesign1415 6 жыл бұрын
"Ha ha" sounds like sarcasm... I apologize for my "veiled conclusion". I admit, I am not terribly familiar with the Smurfs or Smurf fan-culture, since they didn't become popular here (in the US) until I was a young adult. My understanding is they are a bunch of tiny blue shirtless men of the same age (with highly specialized skill sets), one older Smurf (Papa Smurf, I believe), and a solitary female (Smurfette, if memory serves), who struggle against the evil machinations of a wizard (?) named Gargomel (I may be way off on the spelling). With all that, plus the "1973" part of your username, I subconsciously concluded that (1) you are probably about 45 (likely born in 1973), and (2) you are probably a fan of the Smurfs. It is the darker side of human nature to judge (and misjudge), yet when we see a post by someone calling themselves "BootyChaser69" saying 'not to objectify women', it's hard not to think, "That seems hypocritical.". Yet, it's possible that BootyChaser69 is a woke, 69 year-old pirate who's simply trying to find his treasure (booty). So again, I apologize if I have misjudged you. My go-to passive/aggressive "limpp" (sic) insult aside, I will sum up for you: I said Richard Ayoade was a genius (a viewpoint shared by many). You accused me of throwing the word "genius" around with abandon, and yawned. I replied that in this case, the word was being used appropriately (before the passive/aggressive part). Now, if we're talking about having nothing of value to add, I would say that your "Yawn" post (if I may call it that) didn't exactly bring anything to the table. The funny thing is, I agree that the word gets misapplied to a lot of people. But not this time.

Best way to deal with an interview like this, instead of walking away, or getting angry, Ayode justs starts answering the questions with such absurd answers it has no value for the interviewer. mag0024 I've heard a rumour that they're planning to give this Krishnan guy his very own hour length show which will feature roughly four celebrities each episode who will discipline him. Also, musicians will occasionally play on the show and the idea is that they'll have reworded their songs' lyrics to centre around Krishnan and generally try to hurt his feelings.

+kiwiii Becoz some people at Channel 4 News, who are as equally as douchey as Krishnan Guru-Murthy, have a very twisted ideology about interviewing film makers/actors. For most of the time when Guru-Murthy interviews people, it feels like the answer he wanted from his guests was: I'm ashamed of what I do. And that seems to be the goal of Channel 4 News, trying their best effort to shame Hollywood workers.

Tommy Curson-Smith The interverwer started off by placing emphasis on Richard being black and white; when biracials are not uncommon, hence the sarcastic use of the term. It was to let the interviewer know that his racial make up has zero relevance to what he was doing on on the programme.

This is a beautiful example of how conditioning works. Journalists start off free-spirited and ready to tackle any social concern but slowly get pounded into a box, unable to contend with anything out of their conformed norm. The world need's it's Ayoade's if for nothing but to keep the rest of us honest and open to the possibility that our precise, calculated lives still have variables undefined.

A excellent interviewer would realize he's been relegated to movie and book release press junket fluff pieces and adapt, Guru-Murthy goes hard as in the Downey Jr interview and try to dredge up 20 year old stories in what seems to vain attempts to show off.
