Great reaction, Aria. I remember when this movie was first released and one critic summed it up perfectly: "This movie is a lot better than it deserves to be." Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this before, but director Paul Verhoeven earned the nickname from Hollywood as "Blood N' Butts". Keep the reactions coming, Aria! You are magnificent!

in combat situations, field hospitals often triage patients in reverse order. you give preference to those with minor injuries to put them back into the fight. a guy missing a leg won't ever fight again, a guy with a treatable wound will.

One thing in this film that has always bothered me is a plot hole. Zander is presumably in highschool, because he is playing sports against highschoolers. That being the case, it doesn't make any sense that he's in some kind of leadership position and training pilots at the same time Carmen is just arriving at the fleet. 🤦‍♂️
@abc123tiktok

I don't think that is unrealistic considering the society they are in. I can easily believe he has been training and fully prepared to go in his career from early on like many people do with jobs. Carmen and Johnny an all their friends just randomly signed on last minute. My brother served as a marine but went through some leadership program or something. By time he finished training despite no field experience he already out ranked the very same people who trained him who had actual experience.

In the book, it explains this better (partially because it's not a parody as portrayed here). In order to earn the right to vote, you have to join the military for a minimum service. In real life, some countries require a minimum military service period.

I guess it depends on your view of the conflict. Heinlein (a WWI Navy veteran and WWII Navy Air veteran) wrote the original book and seemed to think of the humans as the good guys. The humans had unknowingly colonized into the bug region. The idea of who started it is a bit hazy as in most conflicts. Since the war isn't over at the end of the movie, we don't know who wins so we don't know who writes the history.

Even if our original intrusion was accidental, when we start fighting back against the bugs that makes us the aggressors. As far as the movie’s concerned, I don’t think the morality of the bugs really matters. It’s the fact that the bugs are being used as a common enemy to rally against so the military can solidify their political power. If the bugs didn’t exist, they would have to find another enemy to fight. Also, I believe it’s implied that the asteroid is a false flag operation.

Wasn't the author well documented in his views? Just the version I heard, could be wrong. His political ideas were accused of sounding a bit fascist. He felt he was being misinterpreted so he wrote the book as a means to paint a picture, convey how he felt democracies should be run. Where voting wasn't an automatic right, it required a volunteer act of civic duty. Not even exclusively military. Volunteer firefighter for instance.

Paul Verhoeven is on record saying he read about 50 pages of Heinlein's novel before getting bored and dropping it. When you don't completely understand what you're trying to parody or satirize, you usually end up making an argument for or lionizing whatever the target of your criticism is. Verhoeven didn't care to understand Heinlein, and his lack of understanding led him to create a film that glamorized what he was trying to criticize. Another example of this phenomenon is Rorschach from Watchmen. Alan Moore made Rorschach as a critique of individualism, but because he didn't understand the philosophy he was criticizing, he ended up making Rorschach a badass and the only character in Watchmen who possesses any real virtue.

I think the misconception that most people miss is what the Federation is. It’s not truly Facist in the sense of what we understand it to be. It’s actually much more of a bend between a military Junta and a democratic republic. They do have (supposedly) free elections, but the system is very rigged to ensure only the acceptable people get into governmental positions. The idea of citizens vs civilians is a rather brilliant stroke. Basically civilians have almost all the rights and legal protections of citizens with the minor exceptions that they can’t vote, hold government positions, or teach. And the only way to get citizenship status is to serve in the military, the idea being that only those willing to put their lives on the line in service of the system should be allowed to decide on how it is governed. We never hear of a supreme leader, so it’s very likely the Federal Council is the ultimate power of the Federation, and they are the ones who decide becomes the Sky Marshal (the head leader of the Federation’s military). An interesting look into a dystopian futuristic society.

"Barbie and Ken" is how Verhoeven described his main characters. And he was perfectly aware they were not the best actors in the world. He wanted to satirize how the USA see themselves (especially through tv, commercials and movies) versus how a foreigner like him - he's Dutch - perceives them. Verhoeven was a child during WW2 - he witnessed how the Nazis slaughtered his people but also how the American army bombed his city to "free" his people. :)
@bluebird3281

Free shouldn't be in quotation marks because that is exactly what the bombings allowed to happen. Operation market garden didn't work out like it was supposed to because there were extra SS Divisions taking R&R there, 8,000 British soldiers were lost. So, cities like Eindhoven had to be bombed, and this is important to remember BECAUSE THATS WHERE THE GERMANS WERE. But if you or Mr. Verhoeven have a better plan they could have utilized I would love to see hear about it.

Hate to tell you, but they're all shallow characters and intentionally so. Some more than others, but they're all good little fascists. Especially Johnny Rico, who's so lacking in personality and will that he won't even engage with his love interest until his commanding officer tells him to. And notice that when Diz says "I love you" he doesn't say it back. He doesn't even say it when she's dying in front of him. That's not an accident. @@Hereticked I don't know about all that. He liked Diz but he didn't love her. At her funeral, he just said she was a good soldier. She was a good thing and part of his team. He was a one dimensional character but lots of movies are populated with his type. He was fighting mad and channeling his determination into combat. During boot camp, he discovered he was good at this infantry stuff and he became a lifer because he had nowhere else to go and nothing to do. He really had nothing to live for so he didn't fear death. The shallow direction of the movie couldn't show that, but Rico was the most complicated character. I don't know if he was a mindless killing machine. The soldier under him who hates all bugs was more that. Rico actually developed intelligence along the way. He was a bad student in school and dense as an empath, but towards the end, was using strategy and control and even receptive as an empath. The movie point was that war made a man of him and gave him a purpose and he needs all the fighting to direct him. Without the army, he would be nothing. He's institutionalized and the military became his new parents. Once the war is over, Rico would feel useless and depressed and the movie shows the dysfunction of being a lifer. He's reunited with Carmen and he doesn't really care. His true love is infantry now

Also, it's very easy to piece together that the strike on Beunos Aires is a false flag meant to drum up support for a bullshit war. They show orbital weapons platforms destroying meteors earlier in the film. Where did they go?!? Hmmm, almost like they were disabled and one was allowed to slip through for some reason. We see numerous instances of the Federation's nonstop propaganda and of the military lying and abusing their soldiers, such as intentionally misreporting deaths. How much hand-holding do you need before you realize they're not the good guy? Verhoven makes strong points about war, but I feel it wasn't as successful as he wanted it to be. Maybe the more transparent points were left on the editing floor. I don't think the meteor/rock was allowed to hit. Nothing in the movie shows that earth has the ability to stop the projectiles from the bug planet. Clearly the ads were directly related to recruitment, and their society is structured on necessary recruitment, and that would be during peace time too. I feel Verhoven 's vision was compromised by the studio to make it more a fun action film. As for the shallow characters, it may be just poor direction. I don't feel the movie really was much deeper than you give it credit for. It didn't fully criticize the military. There was the whole subject of who the real bad guys were and who initiated the war, but the movie should have capitalized more on controlled narratives that revealed ulterior motives. Ultimately the movie was dumbed down and the greater themes are largely speculative. Yes, the government did dupe people into recruitment but every country at war would be the same. A action packed sci-fi movie is a perfect movie with a significant other. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. Sadly there has not been a good sci-fi movie since Star Wars. Starship Troopers is a good contender. Let's hope more sci-fi movies get made in the future. Years ago we Had Battlestar Galactica and The Last Starfighter. Those were great.

I never really saw this as a parody, maybe only as satire. And even then I still prefer to take it seriously. Maybe it's because I grew up with the animated Starship Troopers TV show. But like honestly if the Bugs showed up here on earth tomorrow do you really think our response would be any different? We can look at it to make fun of our reaction... But I think it shows us an accurate reflection of our own psychology. For those who see this as some sort if comedic parody I would suggest thst they do not see the evil thar lurks in their own subconscious. There are no "good guys" in a war. Only "your side". If you want real parody movies then watch Airplane, Naked Gun or Austin Powers. If you want satire watch Monty Python. Or, if you want another (slightly more hopeful) perspective of Sci-Fi aliens vs Humans watch Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

A lot of people get bent out of shape over whether the humans in this film are good or bad, and they rant either that this movie glorifies nazis or that it argues against naziism through satire. In _my_ opinion, its point is that it makes little to no difference to the front-line soldiers.

I don’t think the film tries to portray good guys and bad guys. At the deepest level both societies are essentially the same. Both have a master class, both have higher order technologies or higher order biologicals such as fighter planes and flying bugs, both have lower or mass warriors as in the mobile infantry and the lobster warriors. Both are determined to expand their space at the expense of others. The director satirizes patriotism, commercialism and western society like most western intellectuals protected by a civil society. The fascist government is really a limited democracy where the rules are the rules and punishment is direct and proportional. Non-citizens obey the rules but are free to be rich. But only those who sacrifice for the State have a say in State Policy. This Citizen State was the result of a revolution of veterans returning from the relentless, pointless wars fomented by feckless democracies and other tyrannical systems. Heinlein’s books on balance support Citizenship and a harsh justice system, but don’t villainize the bugs. Movie is fun and thoughtful, book is brilliant.

Director Paul Verhoeven continued his satyric, sociopolitical style by poking fun at fascist dictatorships. The look of the military and its emblems and uniforms in this film, especially, were designed to emulate German Nazis and other fascist regimes that have threatened the planet at various times (and could again). So, yes, the human characters may not all be good.

@@Whiskey0880 It doesn't look like you are paying attention to reality or history. There is currently a red-hatted movement lead by someone who wears orange-tinted bronzer and has a bad comb-over and who eerily spouts Nazi statements of the past.

The whole setting of the movie is pretty cartoon-ish, so I know it's beside the point to question the scale and physics involved. Yet, hurling asteroids *between solar systems* (the alien bugs are light years away, right?) does strain my disbelief suspenders... How many æons would it take for the asteroids to arrive? Do they fly near light speed, you say? How do you accelerate an asteroid to near light speed without crushing and evaporating it? They did not show any engines attached to the asteroids; none that I recall. It looked like they were just _lobbed_ somehow. Interstellar space is just too big, and orbital mechanics is just too unfamiliar to work well in a movie. So cartoon physics it is! And this movie has cartoon politics, too, for good measure.
@ThinkerT
@ThinkerT 6 ай бұрын
There's actually a movie theory that makes the asteroid more plausible. The theory is that the asteroid is a "false flag" operation by the Earth government to get justification for war and the population mobilized behind them (similarly to what the bad guys in WW2 did with several countries, like with Poland.) Then the asteroid wouldn't have needed to travel nearly as far, and that very much fits in with the facistic theme.
@hermanrobak1285

@@ThinkerT Yeah, *In A World Of Cartoon Politics, ONE MAN Would Convince Mankind That The Alien Bugs Were Hurling Astroids At Earth!* I regret to say, _that_ premise does not strain my disbelief suspenders too much. I suppose humanity could have figured out faster than light travel _before_ they regressed into Parody World. Then again, I'm tempted to invoke the "unreliable narrator": If the movie doesn't ring true, it may be because it's not portraying events as they actually (fictionally) happened. The movie portrays a glossy world where the war narrative is (mostly) taken at face value, and where the skeptics look ridiculous. Just like a propaganda movie would.

Not really. The nazis didn't win the war in their version of history. Society shifted to what it is in the film at least a century after the war after a war with the chinese and russians and things imploded the way they did in russia in 1917, except it was the veterans who took over and established a militaristic society instead of the soviets

The movie makes alot more sense if you've read the book. Its strongly implied the meteor was a false flag and that the humans started the war (which is kind of obvious considering the bugs are on the other side of the galaxy so how did they even target the planet with a meteor like that to begin with). There were also alot of differences between the book and the film and background about why the world is the way it is in the film That said 2 and 3 get progressively low budget and worse and 2 is more of a horror that doesn't have much direct connection to the first one and 3 turns into a parody of itself and goes way over the top and gets weird about religion. I kind of compare the first film to the others the same way dumb and dumber was played straight as two guys who just happened to be really stupid and got themselves into weird situations because of it vs the sequel where they were over the top stupid for the sake of being stupid and it just doesn't work

Heinlein reused a story idea in most of his work where the male protagonist does something stupid/dangerous to impress an attractive woman, and it never ends well. Also people take the government presented here far too seriously. This is not a workable system of government as presented.
