'MIG Productions' and 'AK Interactive' were actually companies started by Mig Jimenez and several partners. 'MIG Productions' was a business partnership between Mig and Mig's first wife, but he had to give the company up as a part of the divorce settlement so his ex wife got the entire business. Mig was then approached by Alex Vallejo to start 'AK Interactive', but Alex Vallejo screwed Mig over as he didn't give Mig a share of the business and he was only ever 'employed' by them even though he literally spear-headed ALL of their product designs - this is why Vallejo and 'AK Interactive' share certain product names. Mig then went on to create 'AMMO by Mig Jimenez', and he's thrived ever since. Random fact; Vallejo paints were exclusively used on original Hanna-Barbera animation cels for the likes of 'Yogi Bear', 'Scooby-Doo', 'The Flintstones' and 'Wacky Races'.

Since you mentioned not being able to find Tamiya Extra Thin, consider this your reminder. While Tamiya Extra Thin is a 50/50 blend of Acetone and Butyl Acetate, the Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner is a 50/50 blend of Butyl Acetate and Acetone...and less per ounce. So you can keep a bottle of the Airbrush Cleaner on hand to either refill your Extra Thin or to thin your Sprue Glue.

Great video guys! RE: Scale75 paints (discussion around 17:00 ish) - if you were using the Scalecolor line, they use a gel based medium whereas other paints usually use a water based medium. So they definitely work a lot differently from other paints - though I personally haven't had any issues using them over other paint lines. They're really great for easy blending and I love their super matte properties! Also...was great meeting you at Adepticon Geoff! You're a super nice fellow, very genuine - thanks for taking a moment to chat!

I have had nothing but trouble with those Scalecolor paints. Aside from needing far more layers than other ranges, I remember finally building up a lovely colour on the new Apothecary Gravis marine’s pouches using Red Leather. It took ages and then the next day started flaking right off! Incidentally it was over a Wraithbone primer so consistent with Geoff’s experience here. I have some other gel-based paints which go on fine so really not sure what’s going on 🤷🏻♂️
@PocketPigments8 ай бұрын
@@kealyj very strange! I use them all the time and haven't had any issues at all. I've used them over multiple brands of both rattle can primers and airbrush primers without any flaking or any other problems. Is it possible that they're not mixed up enough? They are very thick paints so I found I really needed to shake the bejesus out of them with a ball bearing inside the first time I used each paint. Afterwards though they were good to go. I find that most of their colours have very high opacity (cover very well). They are also very densely pigmented so they glaze really, really well. Also I've had a much easier time wet blending them over some other acrylics - not sure if due to the gel medium or the slightly longer drying time over other ranges. But yeah, really strange...perhaps it's an issue specifically with Wraithbone? I've used it in the past and always had problems with it - have known others that have had issues with it as well. Other than that, my best guess is just needing to really shake the hell out of them? Sorry you've had such a crappy experience though :(
@kealyj8 ай бұрын
@@PocketPigments It might be the mixing, I found that no matter how much I shook the bottles there was always some sort of gel medium layer on top of the pigment when I put it on the palette. I'm guessing it should be homegenous. I have a load of mixing balls but never think to put them in, I must give it a go and see if I get better results. I mean, I seem to be in a minority about them so it's likely user error as opposed to everyone else being wrong!
@PocketPigments8 ай бұрын
@@kealyjI'd love to hear if that does the trick for you :) I usually toss a mixing ball in, shake the living heck out of them, and then I even put them on my vortex mixer lol. It's probably overkill but it does the trick!

Also very handy for smoothing roughly drilled barrels or potentially filling slightly 'gappy' joins in a plastic mini too!

I started with Tamiya paints which I never really liked and thought it was me but turned out they were bad for hand painting. When I got an airbrush I saw what they were really made for though and their lacquer range is even better. I have always used Tamiya grey primer and Humbrol varnishes. You do have to be very careful when mixing types and brands as its quite easy to ruin a model. But you can always use different types to your advantage as they may not reactivate one another in cases where using the same type might. I started with military vehicles so a rattle can Tamiya lacquer base coat and acrylic details worked pretty well for a good few years. I use MIG then Ammo enamels and oils for washing / weathering. I fell in love with Citadel paints when realising how easy it was to brush paint with them vs Tamiya. Always used Tamiya extra thin and extra thin quick since it was available as its just so superior to the needle glues. I do like Citadel for its quick and hassle free paint system along with it being non toxic. My wife hates the smell of lacquer and doesn't complain at all about Citadel stuff so there is also that.

I would still use some of the Tamya paints I think,. but all the ones I had has dried up ages ago,and now it is much easier to find Citadel paints as I don't have any hobby shops close by but I do have a Warhammer store an hour away.

Having worked with Byron, and stocked AK paints for Element, yeah, the range is too damn big... The issue as I see it is they're competing with two different Vallejo ranges, both model colour and game colour, combined into one. I actually prefer AK for all base painting, glazing, and stippling on sci-fi and fantasy miniatures. I think they just have a bit more vibrancy and richness than the Vallejo, although the latter are far better for military and historic modelling, and colour match specific camouflage patterns, national uniforms, etc. I don't think AK can drop the latter as they have a heavy focus on military/ historical modelling, but I do feel they could split the range or at least reduce it based on colours which don't actually sell very much. I found, much like Tamiya, and Scalecolor, there are specific AK paints which will sell in large quantities, whilst others sit on the shelf for years.

There's basically only two companies that make paints anyway. HMG paints in the UK and Vallejo in Spain. There's a few others, but the vast majority of all paints are made by those two companies under different labels. The only real choice given to painters is dropper bottle or pot.

Apparently it outsells any other colour in their range 4 to 1.

I started using Citadel Paints and now I feel I'm stuck with a bunch of them because of my army. I'm slowly moving towards Vallejo mainly because, living in Spain, I have to say that Vallejo and AK are SO. RIDICULOUSLY. CHEAP. You can get them for around 2,10€, while Citadel I think is 3,60€. And that's regular paints. Metallics can be around 5 and Constrast paints more than 5€. Army painter, when you find them, are around the same price as Citadel. And something like Two Thin Coats are in the 4€ range.

I'm spanish and your "Vallejo" is good enough. Just substitute your "V" with a "B" (there's no difference between those two sounds in spanish) and treat the double "l" like a "y", like in Bayer Aspirin and you'll be the life of the party at Element Games Nottingham. I also tend to do a hard "j" but could be my northern accent.

Whats crazy is how hard it is to get white right now. The only white in stock at my FLGS for the past 6 months has been GW Corax white which is by far the worst white in the industry. I'm now using an off white instead of pure white as I can not get any pure white.

Hey Jeff, where did you get that shirt from?

Sainsbury’s as a fat lad, lots of shirts come from there. Hawkins (stranger things) high school t-shirt is from Last Exit to Nowhere.

Started with GW, went to pro acryl slowly due to the white. Just bought the new fanatics set to have a complete range in 1 brand rather than the mish mash I had. That said the titanium white will not be going anywhere.

Did you see the Archaon paint tutorial where Duncan points out that GW Chaos Black spray paint is a different colour to their base paint in a pot....so spray it....then base it again with a brush....two thin coats....🫠 TBF it is 8 years old now, so might be different

I still paint over my primer just to be safe.

Honestly I've been happy with Citadel Paints 9 times out of 10, because I'd rather have a thick paint that I can thin down when necessary than a thin paint that'll take 3-4 coats to get the same coverage. Plus there just aren't any places stocking the competitors less than an hour's train journey from me, even though I live in a reasonably sized city! So the only alternative is to buy online and not see what the paint looks like until it arrives, meaning I either get lucky (ProAcryl) or get burned (the old Army Painter warpaints).

In Spain Vallejo is everywhere not like AK. Vallejo has just change the range so that is probably distribution is not that smooth
@keepcalmandre-roll54808 ай бұрын
Mainly use Citadel Paint but do get from Vallejo when it’s a paint/colour GW doesn’t do. Sky Blue, Metal Azul and Goblin Green are examples however I find it frustrating when you see painting guides that use several ranges mixed together. Not everyone can afford multiple ranges and it put me off following those guides. Worcestershire Sauce Wash would be a good replacement for Nuln Oil 😅
