Nyango Star is anonymous, but the best guess I've seen is that Nao Kawakita, a great woman metal drummer, is in the costume. Otherwise, it's just the spirit of a dead cat possessing an apple.

In Japan, no one thinks it's Nao Kawakita. The reason why people outside of Japan thinks Nao Kawakita is Nyango Star is because there's a video posted by Maximum the Hormone where they're playing Shimi with Nyango Star, and you can hear Nao but can't see her. Many non-Japanese people assume that's because she's in the costume and assert she's Nyango Star in the comments section of every reaction video, and other people see those comments, believe them without evidence, and spread misinformation further. But for Japanese people like myself it's obvious she's not Nyango Star because she's giving compliments to Nyango Star in that video, meaning that she's just behind the camera, which makes sense considering the drums are taken by Nyango Star. In Japan, the most likely candidate for Nyango Star is thought to be someone named Daisuke Kodachi. He's a drummer and the very one who filed for the trademark registration for the mascot.

Nyango Star is actually a mascot for a small village in Japan, one that primarily sells apples. It is believed that one of the drummers that performed as Nyango Star has played drums for Baby Metal. Though that is not comfirmed. If you want to see more like this, I'd suggest you check out the band Hevisaurus. They're a band from Finland and do children's metal. They do not sing in English, though most of their videos have english subtitles. A lot of their stuff is somewhat cheesy, though they've got some absolutely awesome songs. My personal favorite is "100". Marko Hietala from Nightwish, is one of the vocalists in that one.

The mascot is Nyango Star (にゃんごすたー), from Aomori Prefecture in Japan, specifically the city Kuroishi: a place known for their apples. In the video, he's at a children's concert playing to "Anpanman no March", the theme song for the anime _Soreike! Anpanman_ The name is a portmanteau of _nyan_ (sounds a cat makes in Japanese, basically the onomatopoeia of "meow" in English) + _ringo_ (apple in Japanese) + a pun on Ringo Starr, the drummer for The Beatles. Nyango Star is also part of the Charametal band CHARAMEL (a pun on "caramel" + _kyara_ shortened from the English word "character", which describes fictional characters in Japanese), which consists of 3 other mascots. _Yuru-chara_ (Japanese mascot characters, translates to _yurui_ "loose/gentle-laid-back" + _kyara_ as explained above) are popular in Japan for representing local regions and towns and are designed by more amateur creators as opposed to professional mascots like Hello Kitty and Rirakuma. In this case, Nyango Star was created to help bring more tourism to Kuroishi and Aomori. The lore for Nyango Star is that they're the ghost of a cat who was buried in an apple field, possessing an apple. There's rumours that the person beneath the costume is Nao, the female drummer of Japanese metal band Maximum the Hormone. Idk if that has been debunked or not? Then again, the mascots are meant to be mysterious anyway :)
