Pay no attention to my profile picture, but the inkling being Japan's main actually makes a lot of sense. The hubworld for the first splatoon game was heavily inspired by Shibuya crossing. Even the big tower in the center is nearly identical to the Tokyo tower. There are also plenty of cultural influences, like the big tanuki and fox statue on display, not to mention how the squid sisters are basically just splatoon's version of Japanese idols. So, yeah, all in all, pretty spot on.
