As described in Matti Friedman’s "Spies of No Country,”iIn the fight for a Jewish homeland, Israel’s first spies gathered essential intelligence, laying the groundwork for the Mossad.
Among them were Gamliel Cohen and Isaac Shoshan, who showed relentless bravery, infiltrating enemy lines and blending into the Arab world in daring efforts that were crucial for Israel’s survival.

About Explainers: From ancient Jewish traditions to the modern State of Israel, we explain it all. Diving into anything and everything related to Jewish culture, history, and even religion.
Understand Jewish holidays, Israeli politics, Jewish diasporic communities, and more. Learn about Judaism in pop culture, debunking myths about Jews, and explore obscure Israeli landmarks. We’re asking questions as basic as “What is the Talmud?”, and as obscure as “How did hip-hop boost Kosher wine sales?”, and everything in between.
About Unpacked: We provide nuanced insights by unpacking all things Jewish. People are complex and complicated - yet we’re constantly being pushed to oversimplify our world. At Unpacked we know that being complex makes us more interesting. Because of this, we break the world down with nuance and insight to drive your curiosity and challenge your thinking.

Mind Begs the Question: ▪︎Dehumanizing a group of people Rats - Holocaustic ▪︎Dehumanizing a group of people Human Animals - Democratic?
@adigabai
@adigabai 22 сағат бұрын
Dehumanizing a group of people = Bad in any case. The Holocaust is something else. It's systematically, methodically eliminating a group of people. To do so at scale, you also dehumanize them, so people will grow to hate them and connect them to everything evil or not human in the world. It also has nothing to do with democracy. To be able to carry out a genocide, you probably need the state not to be democratic. Otherwise, there will be more resistance to it. I'm guessing that your comment suggests that Israel is dehumanizing the Palestinians. If so, you are mistaken. We dehumanize HMS and other groups like them, and we don't work hard for it. It's simple: they want to kill us and have been doing that for years. Therefore, we hate them. However, they don't star in our school books, and we don't make toddler TV shows around that. Check out UNRWA teaching materials and maybe a class or two. They focus on teaching hate and dehumanization. Go to our elementary schools, you won't find that. Open the TV in Gaza for a day. You will see what I'm referring to. Check out a show called "Tomorrow's Pioneers," a young children's show with Farfour, which is based on Mickey Mouse. And we don't do that in regards to the Palestinians as a people. We might call them Arabs since that is what they were before the term Palestinians as a nationality was invented in 1964. But that is also what they call themselves. And it's not dehumanizing. We can get furious that a population of people are not acting when they see human hostages and, in fact, celebrating as they are being paraded in the streets, but that doesn't translate into an official policy. Yes, our politicians and other figures used some strong words in this war, which were always aimed at HMS and the other terror groups. And yes, while our people were still being killed. And while the country was still being invaded, they used even stronger words. But they are human just like everyone else. And while you are seeing your people die, you will curse anyone who is currently doing that. HMS and its friends were "kind" enough to live stream some of their actions. I suggest expanding the sources of the information you are getting or doing some more profound research by yourself.

40  O Children of Israel! Remember My blessings which I bestowed upon you, and fulfill your pledge to Me, and I will fulfill My pledge to you, and fear Me. 41  And believe in what I revealed, confirming what is with you; and do not be the first to deny it; and do not exchange My revelations for a small price; and be conscious of Me. 42  And do not mix truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth while you know. 43  And attend to your prayers, and practice regular charity, and kneel with those who kneel. 44  Do you command people to virtuous conduct, and forget yourselves, even though you read the Scripture? Do you not understand? 45  And seek help through patience and prayer. But it is difficult, except for the devout. 46  Those who know that they will meet their Lord, and that to Him they will return. 47  O Children of Israel! Remember My favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I favored you over all nations. 48  And beware of a Day when no soul will avail another in the least, nor will any intercession be accepted on its behalf, nor will any ransom be taken from it, nor will they be helped. 49  And recall that We delivered you from the people of Pharaoh. They inflicted on you terrible persecution, killing your sons and sparing your women. Therein was a tremendous trial from your Lord. 50  And recall that We parted the sea for you, so We saved you, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh as you looked on. 51  And recall that We appointed for Moses forty nights. Then you took to worshiping the calf after him, and you turned wicked. 52  Then We pardoned you after that, so that you might be grateful. 53  And recall that We gave Moses the Scripture and the Criterion, so that you may be guided. 122  O Children of Israel! Remember My blessing which I bestowed upon you, and that I have favored you over all people. 123  And beware of a Day when no soul will avail another soul in any way, and no ransom will be accepted from it, and no intercession will benefit it, and they will not be helped. 124  And when his Lord tested Abraham with certain words, and he fulfilled them. He said, “I am making you a leader of humanity.” He said, “And my descendants?” He said, “My pledge does not include the wrongdoers.” 125  And We made the House a focal point for the people, and a sanctuary. Use the shrine of Abraham as a place of prayer. And We commissioned Abraham and Ishmael, “Sanctify My House for those who circle around it, and those who seclude themselves in it, and those who kneel and prostrate.” 126  When Abraham said, “O My Lord, make this a peaceful land, and provide its people with fruits-whoever of them believes in God and the Last Day.” He said, “And whoever disbelieves, I will give him a little enjoyment, then I will consign him to the punishment of the Fire; how miserable the destiny!” 127  As Abraham raises the foundations of the House, together with Ishmael, “Our Lord, accept it from us, You are the Hearer, the Knower. 128  Our Lord, and make us submissive to You, and from our descendants a community submissive to You. And show us our rites, and accept our repentance. You are the Acceptor of Repentance, the Merciful. 129  Our Lord, and raise up among them a messenger, of themselves, who will recite to them Your revelations, and teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. You are the Almighty, the Wise.” 130  Who would forsake the religion of Abraham, except he who fools himself? We chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous. 131  When his Lord said to him, “Submit!” He said, “I have submitted to the Lord of the Worlds.” 132  And Abraham exhorted his sons, and Jacob, “O my sons, God has chosen this religion for you, so do not die unless you have submitted.” 133  Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, and he said to his sons, “What will you worship after Me?” They said, “We will worship your God, and the God of your fathers, Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac; One God; and to Him we submit.” 134  That was a community that has passed; for them is what they have earned, and for you is what you have earned; and you will not be questioned about what they used to do. 135  And they say, “Be Jews or Christians, and you will be guided.” Say, “Rather, the religion of Abraham, the Monotheist; he was not an idolater.” 136  Say, “We believe in God; and in what was revealed to us; and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses and Jesus; and in what was given to the prophets-from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we surrender.” 137  If they believe in the same as you have believed in, then they have been guided. But if they turn away, then they are in schism. God will protect you against them; for He is the Hearer, the Knower. 138  God’s coloring. And who gives better coloring than God? “And we are devoted to Him.” 139  Say, “Do you argue with us about God, when He is our Lord and your Lord, and We have our works, and you have your works, and we are sincere to Him?” 140  Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs were Jews or Christians? Say, “Do you know better, or God?” And who does greater wrong than he who conceals a testimony he has from God? God is not unaware of what you do. 141  That was a community that has passed. To them is what they have earned, and to you is what you have earned. And you will not be questioned about what they used to do. 2  And We gave Moses the Scripture, and made it a guide for the Children of Israel: Take none for protector other than Me. 3  The descendants of those We carried with Noah. He was an appreciative servant. 4  And We conveyed to the Children of Israel in the Scripture: You will commit evil on earth twice, and you will rise to a great height. 5  When the first of the two promises came true, We sent against you servants of Ours, possessing great might, and they ransacked your homes. It was a promise fulfilled. 6  Then We gave you back your turn against them, and supplied you with wealth and children, and made you more numerous. 7  If you work righteousness, you work righteousness for yourselves; and if you commit evil, you do so against yourselves. Then, when the second promise comes true, they will make your faces filled with sorrow, and enter the Temple as they entered it the first time, and utterly destroy all that falls into their power. 8  Perhaps your Lord will have mercy on you. But if you revert, We will revert. We have made Hell a prison for the disbelievers. 9  This Quran guides to what is most upright; and it gives good news to the believers who do good deeds, that they will have a great reward. 10  And those who do not believe in the Hereafter-We have prepared for them a painful punishment. 11  The human being prays for evil as he prays for good. The human being is very hasty. 12  We have made the night and the day two wonders. We erased the wonder of the night, and made the wonder of the day revealing, that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and know the number of years, and the calculation. We have explained all things in detail. 13  For every person We have attached his fate to his neck. And on the Day of Resurrection, We will bring out for him a book which he will find spread open. 14  “Read your book; today there will be none but yourself to call you to account.” 15  Whoever is guided-is guided for his own good. And whoever goes astray-goes astray to his detriment. No burdened soul carries the burdens of another, nor do We ever punish until We have sent a messenger. 170  O people! The Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe-that is best for you. But if you disbelieve, to God belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. God is Omniscient and Wise. 171  O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion, and do not say about God except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, is the Messenger of God, and His Word that He conveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say, “Three.” Refrain-it is better for you. God is only one God. Glory be to Him-that He should have a son. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth, and God is a sufficient Protector. 172  The Messiah does not disdain to be a servant of God, nor do the favored angels. Whoever disdains His worship, and is too arrogant-He will round them up to Himself altogether. 28  It is He who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religions. God suffices as Witness. 29  Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those with him are stern against the disbelievers, yet compassionate amongst themselves. You see them kneeling, prostrating, seeking blessings from God and approval. Their marks are on their faces from the effects of prostration. Such is their description in the Torah, and their description in the Gospel: like a plant that sprouts, becomes strong, grows thick, and rests on its stem, impressing the farmers. Through them He enrages the disbelievers. God has promised those among them who believe and do good deeds forgiveness and a great reward. 85  Whoever seeks other than Islam as a religion, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers. 111  And say, “Praise be to God, who has not begotten a son, nor has He a partner in sovereignty, nor has He an ally out of weakness, and glorify Him constantly.” Read The Quran

It’s more complicated than that. It wasn’t all bad or black and white but the Arabs were largely not in favor of Jewish immigration to the British mandate of Palestine and petitioned the British to stop it. And they did attack Jews who arrived and tried to set up a home of their own - instead of agreeing to share the land. You can learn more here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKKQlqCKfK6al6s They also attacked Jews before partition was even discussed, like this massacre back in 1929(!) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWSwgGqaf9Wmmqs It also didn’t work out well for Jews living in Arab countries, like Iraq - you can learn more here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep-7hIKHpt-UgaM

Judaism Was The Religion of Slaves Brought To America “The study of customs and rites and the analysis of the semantics of these African tribes have led many of their observers to propose some hypotheses and even to draw some conclusions. Doctor Allen H. Godbey reached the following conclusion: ‘These factors have a very specific significance if we consider the presence of Judaism among the American Negroes. Hundreds of thousands of slaves were transported to America from West Africa during the trade which started some 400 years ago. What traces of Judaism still remained among the Negroes of West Africa at that period? To the extent that they were persecuted they were more likely than other Negroes to be seized during wars and sold as slaves. It is virtually certain that many part Jewish Negroes were among those sent as slaves to America. How many of them would have been able to conserve some Jewish customs is another question. This conclusion put forward by Godbey, which argues for the existence of a more or less recurrent Judaism in West Africa in the same places as those from which the Negroes were taken, is shared by others, such as Maurice Delafosse. But most significantly it has been adopted by a class of educated Black Americans as a key argument to demonstrate that the Jewish religion is the traditional religion of Africans brought in slavery to the American continent.” (p 235 - 236)

You are wrong, Palestine wasn't divided into Jews and Arabs. Rather, half of the land was given to the European Jews who came to form the state of Israel on Palestinian land, A land that had Palestinian Muslims, Christians and Jews.When European Jews forcefully created their land, they made the land a home for all Jews on Earth and then Jews from all parts of the world started coming in including the Jews of the Arab world. So what's this false narrative you are saying?
@adigabai
@adigabai 21 сағат бұрын
The Jews that were in the land didn't live in peace and harmony like you are trying to say. The fighting didn't start when the European Jews came. And it had started long before the Jews wanted to build a state. Check out the work of Adriaan Reland, a Dutch scholar who published "Hadriani Relandi Palaestina ex monumentis veteribus illustrata", in 1714. It's a significant work in the field of historical geography and archaeology, as Reland extensively documented the geography, history, various aspects of the demographics, and archaeology of the region called Palestine based on ancient sources. It's written in Latin. However, you can find some parts of it translated as part of academic research. According to his census of 2500 villages and towns, most of the people in the land were Jewish. Very few Arabs/Muslims lived in the area at that time. The majority were Jews. It changed after more Jews returned and started transforming the land from what was mostly desert and swamps. This land has always had people coming and going. Just as Jews started to immigrate more to it in the 19th century, Arabs did as well. In a land that today has about 10 million (in Israel) and 6 million (West Bank and Gaza), in 1882, you had a population of about 300k. This reached about 689k in 1914 and 757k in 1922. In fact, as the Zionists came and worked the land, more economic opportunities opened up, so more people came. And the British Mandate increased it more. The Zionists did everything to try and build the state peacefully and diplomatically but ran into opposition every step of the way. Jews becoming something more than Dhimmis was unheard of in the Arab world. It took quite a while for the Jews to start organizing and move to the offensive. And it was done after a lot of things happened in the land AND the Middle East. Jews started arriving in numbers even before modern Israel was established, and they were forced out of Arab lands before that. Just a few quick examples: 1928: Jewish orphans sold into slavery and forced to convert to Islam by the Muslim Brotherhood, Yemen 1934: Anti-Jewish pogrom in Constantine, Algeria. 200 Jewish stores were raided, and the total material damage was estimated at more than 150 million francs. It also sent a quarter of Constantine’s Jewish population into poverty. 1934, 1936, 1941: massacre(s) - Farhud, Iraq Before having a state again, the Jews weren't really safe anywhere, not for long. Now, when we have a state again, we can protect ourselves. Also, check out a short and interesting video titled: "LEAVE! - The Origins Of Palestinian Refugees (In Their OWN Words)" on "palwatch" channel. It explains how it was that so many left Israel and the role the Jews/Zionists had in it, as well as the roles the Arab leadership had.

@@adigabai the Jews in the land at that time lived in peace long before the coming of European Jews who escaped from Adolf Hitler's wrath and decided to create the European Jewish state of Israel. Of Course Palestine like other places embraced different people to live and do business in the land but the Palestinians at that time where Muslims, Christians and Jews living side by side in peace since from the time of the 3rd Islamic Caliph Umar. The Jews in Europe right from history where the ones that faced persecution and hate, first under the newly Christianized Roman empire and then under Hitler. The Jews in other parts of the world especially in the Arab Muslim world faced no persecution and hate. The Jews of Europe were the ones who came up with the idea of a state on Palestinian soil not the Jews of other continents. If you say Jews were never safe, it was in Europe. It was the European Jews backed by the Western and European Christian powers with their agenda of taking the land of Palestine from Palestinians which is sacred to both Muslims, Christians and Jews that gave birth to the Jewish hate in the Arab/Muslim world.

Perfect harmony?! That would have been a dream come true for many! Under Islam, Jews are considered Dhimmis. That is not peaceful living. That is not harmony. I can start in 622~627 when there was ethnic cleansing of Jews from Mecca and Medina. There wasn't one century after that didn't have plenty of atrocities, pogroms, and injustices committed by Muslims against Jews. Also, in what ways did he demonize the Arabs here? or in general? P.S. Another related quote from Golda Meir that is still true today: "Peace will come to the Middle East when the Arabs love their children more than they hate us."
