How about a Future Paradox Pokémon like a digital clock for HooHoot and Noctowl being inspired by Bubo from CLASH OF THE TITAN since it is basically a clockwork, mechanical owl.
@mintytheslime Жыл бұрын
Fun Fact that I hope no one else has commented on yet, the reason Noctowl has the hidden ability Tinted Lens is because they have very special eyes. To be more specific, owls’ don’t have eyeballs (at least in the way we know it). Instead their eyes are tubes that act similar to binoculars. Because of this, their eyes are completely immobile. That’s one of the reasons they can move their heads like an irl cryptid.
@alv1506 Жыл бұрын
Fun theory, don't remember if I saw it somewhere or if it came to me. Noctowl was originally psychic type many years ago, but evolved the normal type to be able to survive among ghost type pokemon, which they share habitat with. That would explain why they learn that insane amount of psychic type moves naturally

Hello, I'm back today to explain German Pokémon names. This time, of course, I will be talking about Hoothoot and Noctowl. And this will be very short, due to Hoothoot having the same name in English and German. Noctowl's name is also pretty similiar in both languages, but still different enough to talk about it. So, it'd name is a combination of "noctu" or nocternal and "Uhu" or "huh"? "Noctu" being the latin word für "at night" or "during night". Meanwhile, "Uhu" is a German word for some specific types for owls like the great horned owls or the eagle owl. "Huh" is the sound olws make, just like "hoot" and is pronounced pretty much the same, except the 't' missing. And that's it for today. Thanks fot reading and see you next time!
@gabrielclamens3151 Жыл бұрын
I'll use this opportunity to explain your western neighbour names, the french ones ! Hoothoot is the same in most languages I think, and we kept it the same here too, the more interesting part comes with the evoltion, Noctowl in french is "Noarfang" who comes from "Noar" (corruption of Noir, which means black) and "Fang" from "Harfang" who's a type of owl ! Harfang des neiges is just snowy owl in french And that's all !

The whole thing about Noctowl's inspiration hunting smaller owls and the eating the baby gag reminded me of something, likely not intentional but it felt like something worth contributing. Chronos (at least from what I can gather, I haven't really seen him mentioned in Greek or Roman mythos unless I explicitly looked for it), is apparently the personification of time. HOWEVER, his name also sounds remarkably similar to Kronos, the youngest titan, known for devouring his own offspring in an attempt to maintain his rule. There's also the myth of Athena's birth, where she sprung from Zeus' head after he devoured her mother in fear she'd birth a son that would overthrow him, much like he did with his own father Kronos. Most likely I'm reaching here, but eh, I found it interesting so here you go-

I've actually been pretty close to an actual loon at around dusk when I was a kid. I had been on a camping trip with my uncle and we went fishing until it was getting a bit late since we were going to make s'mores at a campfire near the lake. I had heard the sound of a loon before but never knew what it was. I was around 8 years-old at the time. I asked my uncle what made that sound and he pointed out a bird not far from us in the water. And that bird was a loon. That moment has always stuck with me as a rare first-hand experience with the beauty of nature.

From what I've researched and how I interpret it, Noctowl is inspired by an Aztec creature known as a Tlacatecolotl, a large owl that when it perched near a house and began to hoot, was believed to be a sign of bad luck for those who lived there, but the way to scare that owl away was to insult him until he left. Also, Mesoamerican sorcerers were known to transform into various animals, especially owls, and had magical powers, both as for well and for worse and in turn, Noctowl is based by the Great horned owl, a very common species of owl in Mexico Ok, that was just my opinion :)

Noctowl actually does has a little of the clock theme still left in it. It's a grandfather clock, those 2 eyebrows and especially the prong in the center give it away. Good look at picture of old clocks, that EXACT design with the prong in the middle is extremely common. Also Noctowl is an old man/grandfather. The CLOCK motif isn't quite as strong but the TIME motif is. It continues the time theme by being an embodiment of old age.

I like the theming of gen 2 is about time. Gen 2 introduced the day and night cycle and Hoothoot is the poster child for that because owls are nocturnal. Ho-oh represents the sun and day, Lugia represents the moon and night, Celebi can time travel, eggs and baby pokemon were introduced which can represent aging, time based evolutions were introduced which Espeon and Unbreon are all about. Hell even the time travel machine allows Pokémon caught in Gold/Silver/Crystal to be traded over to Red/Blue/Yellow. Really interesting that gen 2 is about time

One thing I've always wondered was why Hoothoot and Noctowl were never made a psychic/flying type considering their origins and influences described in this video. Instead we got Natu and Xatu (and kinda Lugia) in that generation to fill that role of a psychic/flying type. Would be curious to see more of this theme expanded upon in other videos. Also, if you come to think of it, with these owls representing the nighttime in these games it would open up to a counterpart to eventually come into existence for the birds that signal the day (such as a 2-stage rooster pokemon). Would be interesting to see if that ever eventually comes to fruition there.
