The singer Mike Patton is called The Man Of A 1,000 voices for a reason. Dude can sing, scream, growl, lounge sing, and even sing Spanish opera. Dudes a genius. You guys need to do a lot more reactions to Faith No More. They are a very diverse sounding band. They were the first band to mix rap and Metal. Long before NuMetal did it.

@@jhamilton1007 Technically *pushes glasses up nose* the Anthrax and Public Enemy version of "Bring The Noise" was released in 1991, but Anthrax did metal + rap thing even earlier in 1987 with "I'm The Man". And Sir Mixalot did "Iron Man" with Metal Church in 1988. And then there were the Beastie Boys in 1986 with "Fight For Your Right (To Party)". And I do believe Faith No More released "We Care A Lot" in 1986 as well.. so I think they and Beastie Boys share the "first to do it" title. ;)

Loved the Faith No More reaction. The singer is named Mike Patton. Mike Patton is the current record holder for the widest singing range in all of recorded music. He has a range of 6 octaves. He also is the singer for over 10 bands. Besides Faith No More, he’s in Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantômas, Dead Cross, Lovage, Mondo Cane, Peeping Tom, General Patton vs X-ecutioners just to name a few… I could keep going… LOL. His many bands have many different music styles. Faith No More in and of itself has many different styles from album to album. The more you dig into his many projects it’s hard to believe it is the same guy singing for all of those bands. He is so versatile. I hope you check out more.

My senior quote was “I’m a perfectionist, and perfect is a skinned knee.” I got into Mike Patton when I was in 8th grade. I still am. Saw Mr. Bungle last Fall. He was not doing drugs, but recently dealt with some drinking and psych issues from pandemic isolation. Lyrically it is hard to pin him down. He has intent, but his word smithing is primarily focused on the instrumentation of sounds coming out of his mouth and how they work within collaboration with other musicians and/or instruments. He is perhaps literally the most eclectic musician to ever make music. He certainly collaborates in n this way. This is why he is hard to pin down within a song or a musical marketplaces. He does not care about your money…he cares about what is interesting to him artistically in those moments and the process. His collaborations and his labels collaborations have included working with John Zorn, Rahzel (Roots), Scott Ian (Anthrax/Public Enemy), Hank Williams III, Del The Funky Homosapien, Buzzy (The Melvins), Dave Lambardo (Slayer)…it goes on and on. He has the widest vocal range in rock history. He is up there with Yma Sumac, as far as history of vocal abilities. This song is a great example of where he was at the time…but it doesn’t define him. That’s not possible. He can be strait forward musically and he can be far more experimental than this. He has Thrash Metal and Hip-Hop roots…but he is also a well known in Jazz circles and is a Punk and Grunge Era Icon. He still makes music…considered one of the most prolific musicians in history.

I heard that the vocalist Mike Patton was paranoid of falling into the trappings of fame after the success of their previous album. So they made this really bizarre album where the vocals are a mix of grunts, rapping, strange noises, gutteral sounds, spoken word, and singing. Oddly enough, this album is a masterpiece of avant garde music. It's remarkable how accessible and beloved it is, given that it's so intentionally bizarre.

As someone who knew Mr Bungle before FNM I thought it was pretty mainstream compared to Patton's usual output. Brilliant album regardless

This was Mike's attempt of bringing a avante experimental sound to the mainstream audience. Angel dust is a good example of this. His other work with mr.bungle and fantomas is way more creative and bizarre but I feel with faith no more music he tried to mix his creative mind into the band already piano focused band. Which in my opinion paid off well. Angel dust and king are amazing. Fnm without Mike were good and with him it's just brings FNM to a whole another level of creativity.

And it was the reason Jim left/was fired/both/neither. He didn't like the shift away from guitar based songs. Ironically their next album was almost entirely guitar driven.

If that scrambles your brain, try Patton's other band Mr Bungle. Travolta, Slow Growing Deaf, Carousel. Lex gets the song vibe - the melody contrasting with the aggressive rap. Yep yep. And Brad's idea about pain from a relationship. Exactly. Also lots of irony in there. Good reaction to a weird and complex track!

One thing to note about Mike Patton is that he treats his voice and lyrics like an instrument. The lyrics sometimes have no deep meaning behind them and are often used simply because they phonetically sound good together.

Summer of 1992, the summer of my discontent. Laid up with a broken leg from a summer league hockey game, music was one of the things that kept me from losing my mind and this was one of the songs that pulled me through that summer.

FNM is one of my all-time favorites. They headlined the first club show I ever went to (w/ Helmet opening, at the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA - damn I miss those days)! The albums The Real Thing and Angel Dust are basically perfect from start to finish. Check out A Small Victory, RV, Kindergarten, Smaller and Smaller, and Midnight Cowboy from this album. Then check out the songs I didn't list - they're all worth hearing. The song The Real Thing is my favorite by them, but there are a lot more where this came from! Love the reaction!

Mike Patton is one of the greatest vocalists in rock history. Few have the range he can belt out. FNM is a truly unique band, who are often overlooked, because they don’t fit neatly in a box (category).

I love this song. I was aware of faith no more, I’d heard and liked some of their songs. They were the kind of band I’d hear sometimes hanging with a certain crowd. But I ended up finding this song by accident. One of those Spotify recs that half the time I don’t bother to listen to. But I was bored and this song immediately became playlist. I keep meaning to delve more into their song catalog but haven’t gotten around to it.
